Web Comics we read on a daily basis
« on: March 05, 2011, 01:59:51 PM »
So, Seamus commented on the comic I posted ("PVP" by Scott Kurtz) in the Talamania Theme Vote thread, and it got me thinking, "I wonder what comics we're all reading that might be in common, and which might be new to some or all of us?"

Here's my list (titles are linked to the comic):

Girl Genius by Phil and Kaja FoglioA steampunkish, "gaslamp fantasy" of mad science and Jaeger monsters.

PvP (Player v. Player by Scott KurtzTopical (and not-so-topical) humor regarding gaming, current events and modern culture as told by the owner and staff of a gaming mag.

Schlock Mercenary by Howard TaylerA space opera; a damn fine one, too.

CAD (CTRL+ALT+DEL) by Tim BuckleyThe story of roommates, gaming, psychotic lunacy and gaming.

Goblins - Life through their Eyes by Tarol Hunt and Danielle StephensSwords and Sorcery through the eyes of the monsters.  The cool things is that they know that they're in a world ruled by a dungeon master and that the adventurerers are player characters.

What it Takes by KEZPost-apocalypse (my favorite genre) story of survival.

S*P (Something Positive) by R. K. MilhollandDark intelligent humor.  Randy's stuff is great.

The Zombie Hunters by Jenny and Greg RomanchukAh, zombies (another favorite); how can you go wrong?

That's my short list, and there are many others I check out and see if I want to add them to my daily list.  Let's have yours.  I would love to see some that I haven't checked out, yet.

If sing, sang, and sung, sink, sank, and sunk, and drink, drank, and drunk, how is it that it isn't bring, brang, and brung, think, thank and thunk, and ding, dang, and dung?

Don't even get me started about bad, badder and baddest.  Run, ran AND run...again?  C'mon!

Schlock Mercenary is one of the two on my daily read list.

The other is Sheldon. It's about a 10 year old genius who founds a computer software company called Sheldonsoft. He lives with his Grandpa and has a pet duck that he gave super intelligence and is named Arthur. They also have a pet Pug named Oso, and a small lizard that Arthur adopted and is named Flaco. The other semi regular character is Sheldon's friend named Dante, who is another ten year old and fancies himself an artist. Its a great comic and the Arthur character cracks me up. He's so arrogant and he thinks he's the sexiest being on the planet, but he's a duck. Well worth the read. It's been around since 2001 so you will have a lot of catching up to do.

The same artist that does Sheldon also started a Sci-Fi comic called drive. I've been reading it, but he only puts it out on Saturday, except an online game site paid him to do two comics a week for a month, instead of just one a week. It's interesting, but the story is developing slowly. He only started it about a year ago, so there isn't as much catching up to do.

These are the only ones I have time to read.

Well PvP has already been mentioned.  I also follow:

Punch and Pie http://www.punchanpie.net/ by aerie and chris daily - it is updated sporadically.  Great story that I think is semi-biographical of the author, Aerie Daily.

Wayward Sons Legends http://waywardsons.keenspot.com/ Great SciFi comic that blends in the mythology of earth history in a realistic way.  Great story and great art.  Updates every weekday with bonus material on Sat and Sun.

Requiem http://requiem.spiderforest.com/ Fantastic Digital art, great sci-fi story that has been online since 2004.  It updates every weekday and the author blends in current topics and science news items into the story.  This is more like a graphic novel.  Lot of characters and character development so it can be hard to follow at times. It took me a week of reading regularly to catch up and I've been following it for about 2 years now.

The Order of the Stick http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0778.html  Great fantasy story based on a D&D campaign.  Anybody who has ever role played will love the humor here.  Updates once or twice a week but sporadic as to when.  Very British type of humor.

Ratfist http://ratfist.com/page-40/   by Doug Tennapel, creator of Earthworm Jim.  This is his first web comic and he is doing a great job.  Superhero based world more like The Tick than DC Comics Superheros.  Updates weekdays.

XKCD - http://www.xkcd.com/  Very cerebral and computer programmer oriented but also extremely funny one offs.  Be sure to mouse over and read the text there, its often funnier than the panels.

OGLAF - WARNING - Sexual based comedy not work safe or for those easily offended - http://www.oglaf.com/  As stated fantasy/sexual based comedy.  Only updates on Sundays but with more panels than those who update daily.  While he has a main ongoing storyline, there are also other storylines here and there within it and it jumps around quite a bit.  However, each section is pretty much self contained and can be followed.

So many have already been mentioned. I used to follow PvP and CAD daily but now only check them every once in a while. Something Positive is also an old favourite. Thanks for reminding me of that one Dave.

XKCD can also be good and it seems there is one for every conceivable topic. I think there is probably a rule that when the post count in any given discussion goes up the probability of a XKCD reference apporaches 100%.

One I discovered recently is Darths & Droids. It tackles the SW prequels as if they were an RPG scenario. Any RPGer willl recognize a lot of stuff there. When I showed it to my RPG group they immediately said that I am like the Qui-gon player.

Another excellent one.  Dodge introduced me to it.
