Industrial Modular Terrain Board
« on: April 13, 2010, 09:24:56 AM »
Just wanted everyone to know I am working on a modular terrain board to be completed prior to Talamania V (Insert official title here).

The board will be 4' x 4' Industrial (active).

It will consist of 4 18" by 18" sections that can rotate 360 degrees, 13 6" x 6" sections (360 degrees) and 30 3" by 6" sections (180 degrees).

The 4 18" x 18" sections will be centered in each 2x2 section of the board. I will attached a file to help explain it all (as soon as I figure out how). I am sure it will not be complicated to do.

The 6x6 and 3x6 board pieces will be made out of Hirst Art molds and the 18" x 18" pieces will be made of 3/8 wood board with various building pieces on it (mainly Hirst Arts molds).

I have purchased 5 molds for this and other projects and plan on purchasing 5 additional ones soon. (needed to complete this and other projects).

I would like to post progress here and get your feedback if possible.

I usually cast up to 3 molds over night and I think I have figured out most of the details needed to complete the project.

Because I can rotate the board pieces with a little math it has the following variations - (4x4x4x13x13x4x30x30x2) that would be 77,875,200 different ignoring the fact that 2 3x6 boards can fit into the 6x6 slots.

That sounds really nice. I'm looking forward to pictures and opportunities to pick your brain for advice on how you did it. :)

This sounds like a very good idea.A bit on the large side and might get a bit daughnting at times.I am sure the end result will be well worth it though. The pipe line sets they do in plastic might come in handy too.

Yes the plastic ones would work also. I have the molds and alot of casting material on hand (minus the 5 molds I will purchase in May) so I am kinda committed to moving forward with what I got. Thanks for the tip BTW.

Here are the first pics of many:

I have been casting 2-4 molds per evening (when home of course).

It is going to take alot more castings to complete this project. I have a good start and will purchase 5 more molds (2 for this project) soon.

Thanks,

I plan on priming them with the good stuff - "The Army Painter" uniform grey and staining them black with either black satin stain or G.W. black wash. I am leaning towards the G.W. wash although it is more expensive. I like the way it turns out and I will use the stain on all the metal floors (which cover all 4' x 4').

I know this will be a long and time consuming project, but once completed think of all the variations the modular table will be able to have. Every time you play you can play on a different table.

The pieces you have done so far look great. You should knock a few extra ones up and sell them. That way you could get the cash for the other moulds.

Not a bad idea. I did try to sell some of my CD sized terrain I built but did not have any buyers yet. I will most likely post here first to see if anyone wants some pieces.

I finished a new piece last night - Sediment tank.
I also completed the painting on the first two industrial pieces.

Pictures to follow.

If you sell them try it without cd bases. You might have more interest that way.

Looks really good. I have that mold but haven't had the time to make any projects with it yet.

Exactly what I was thinking. I talked to Dodger about this idea last weekend. Would work great on CD sized bases. I have made up some already in another thread - terrain ideas under Warzone section.

Oh, I thought you said with CD bases. OK I will have both CD sized and full size terrain available for sale/trade.

Any piece I make for the board will be available for purchase.
