Battle Report: Battle for Tanjo Shrine (graphic intensive!)
« on: January 17, 2010, 10:50:18 PM »
Well it's been a while, but I dusted off my Warzone stuff and got a game in over the Christmas break.  It was a solo game but worked into a great scenario.  As I was playing both sides, the battle got pretty neck and neck (especially at the very end).

Here's the link
Battle for Tanjo Shrine

I hope you like it.

hmm...link works fine for me.

well here's the report, I'll just copy & paste it here.  Hopefully the pics transfer through as well.

You should be able to see a map, a Mishima and an Illian logo.

After digging out my Warzone stuff a few weeks ago, I had unboxed some of my Mishima models.  These were some of the last Warzone models I had painted before stocking them away for storage for the repair work in my basement.

Having the itch to play some Warzone, I busted out my rules and minis and brainstormed up a scenario, pitting Mishima vs. Illian.  Both factions I've never really played myself.

Battle of Tanjo Shrine

Lord Heir Maru's Celestial Palace
Hinko Island, Venus
April 10, 1275 YC

High Priestess Amaterasu stormed out of the palace keeping her composure the best she could.  Even as High Sohei of Seven Great Sages for the Mishima Corporation her influence on Lord Heir Maru's decision to commit forces to her cause were met with minimal interest.  The Lord Heir was fully engaged in a mounting crisis involving military confrontation between Capital and Bauhaus corporations as well as a sudden explosion of heretic activities.  Amaterasu's contacts had informed her that the growing tensions with Mishima's rival neighbors were  the result of machinations of the herectics, minions of the Illian Nepharite Sylph.  This was clearly a diversion for the crisis that was truely the concern of Amaterasu, the Shrine of Shiro Tanjo, and the Lord Heir was falling into the nepharite's ploy.

During the Great Crusades Shiro Tanjo was a legendary samurai of the Mishima Corporation from Mercury who lead an assault on a powerful Nepharite called Revaan.  There in the final battle the samurai and his forces banished the Nepharite forever.  This story is well known as a Mishima legend throughout the Solar System as it has been portrayed by Mishima produced movies for centuries.  However the story varies from time to time, ranging from Revaan being a rogue samurai to a Bauhaus warlord.  Very few know of the true story behind Shiro Tanjo's legendary victory.  As having access to the ancient Mishima scrolls of the Shirii Temple, kept secret from the Brotherhood Inquisitors, Ameratasu learned of this.  This story had become dear to her as Shiro was the great ancestor of Master Kensai Masamuni Tanjo, her former swordmaster.  Shiro, a great Ki Master, had defeated the nepharite and had imprisoned him forever on Yuri Island.  In the process Shiro had given his life to imprison the nepharite in Spirit Chamber.  A shrine has been built over the Spirit Chamber and a contingent of Samurai have guarded it ever since.

To many, the shrine is merely there to honor a legendary samurai who defeated one of Mishima's numerous enemies.  To some of the enlightened few, it marks a great battle during the Venusian Crusades where a great samurai gave his life to defeat a nepharite of the Dark Legion.  What only a handful know is that the defeated nepharite still remains there to this day.  Even the honor guard there at the Shrine do not know what truely lies beneath it.  However, a month ago a heretic raid, minions of the Nepharie Sylph, on a Shirii Temple on Mercury had acquired the ancient scrolls that told of the Shiro's great battle against Revaan.

Ameratasu's attempts to bolster the unsuspecting honor guard were given only meager support as the Lord Heir did not understand the graveness of the situation.  Ameratasu's graciously thanked the Lord Heir for his 'generous' gift of Ronin Samurai, several squads of Ashigaru and transport to Yuri Island.

Tanjo Shrine
Yuri Island, Graveton Archipelago, Venus
April 11, 1275 YC

Tiger Dragon Leader Hatsu had just left the radio room when a villager accompanied by several samurai approached and bowed respectfully.  Never raising his eyes to his master and protector, the villager spoke of undead hordes marching through the jungle approaching the shrine.  The Dark Legion forces were about a days march from the shrine.  The force consisted of many undead beings along with several great beasts never seen before on Venus.  Hatsu had just received orders from High Priestess Ameratsu to hold the Shrine until her forces arrived and that under no circumstances was the shrine to fall to Dark Legion hands.   Hatsu began formulating a defense strategy in his head, starting with holding the Dark Legion forces at the bridge leading to the shrine.  The Dark Legion will pay tenfold for every drop of samurai blood.  Ameratsu was also about a day's march from the shrine.  Hopefully the High Priestess will arrive before his outnumbered samurai fall.

Deep in the jungle, about 1 day's march from Tanjo Shrine
Yuri Island, Graveton Archipelago, Venus
April 11, 1275 YC

The Ashigaru Communications Specialist bowed as he took his gear with him.  Ameratsu felt vindicated as the comminque from Lord Heir Maru stated that the crisis with Capital and Bauhaus has been resolved and that he has freed up resources to send to the island.  A VTOL with a squad of Crimson Devils will be the first to arrive.  Furthermore the Lord Heir has granted Ameratsu command of any Mishima units she encounters on Yuri Island.  With the island's thick jungles, there were numerous Dragon Rider patrols that they were sure to encounter before they reached the Shrine.  This was the closest she was going to get to an apology from the Lord Heir and it just might be enough to save Venus from his arrogance.

Objectives
Illian:  Release the Nepharite Revaan from the Spirit Chamber under the Tanjo Shrine.  This can only be done by moving a unit on top of that shrine that is capable of opening a Void Gate and successfully opening the Void Gate on top of the shrine.  If the Void Gate remains open by the time that model is activated in the next turn, Revaan has been released and the objective is claimed.

Mishima: Prevent Illian from releasing the Nepharite Revaan.  To do this, all Illian models that can cast the Void Gate Dark Gift must be destroyed.

Setup

Place the Shrine within 12" of the corner.
Place an impassible river half-way across the long edges of the table.
Place a bridge across the river within 12" of the edge opposite to the Shrine.

Forces are setup in the following order.
1)  All Mishama Shrine Guard models are setup anywhere along the shrine side of the bridge.
2)  All Undead Legion Assault Force models are setup anywhere along the opposite side of the bridge, and no closer than 12" from the bridge.
3)  At the beginning of Turn 4, Sylph's Reserve Forces start on the table edge closest to the bridge but no closer than 6" from the bridge.
4)  At the beginning of Turn 6, Ameratsu's Relief Forces start on the two table edges closest to the Shrine (models may enter from either table edge up to 12" from the corner).

Setup

Mishima places their Bushido Samurai and Tiger Dragons within the jungle patches on either side of the bridge while the Hatamoto wait for advancing Dark Legion behind some hastily made defenses.

The Dark Legion sets up on the opposite side of the bridge.

Turn 1

Dark Legion moves it's forces towards the bridge with it's disposible Undead Legionaires leading the way to absorb the Mishima firepower.

The Hatamoto fire at long range, most of their bullets rip through the rotted corpses of the Undead Legionaires.  Two Legionaires fall to the hail of fire.

Turn 2
Shambling hordes of the Undead Legionaires rush forward absorbing more hits from the Hatamoto.  Necromutants and a Razide provide covering fire from across the bridge killing 1 Hatamoto.  One squad of Legioinaires is destroyed, while the second squad makes it across the bridge.

Turn 3

The Hatomoto fall back to the next level of defense as they take hits.  They lure the Undead Legionaires and Necromutants into range of the Samurai and Tiger Dragons.

The Bushido Samurai launch their assault with a flamethrower attack as they rush from the jungle to confront the Necromutants.

The Tiger Dragons open up with their Rocket Guns which effectively rip through the necrobiotic flesh of the remaining Undead Legionaires.

The Necromutants open up on the the revealed Tiger Dragons with their Tormentor Flame Throwers.

Turn 4

The melee ensues between the samurai and the Undead Legionaires.  The Tiger Dragons move out of the jungle, out of range of the flame throwers.

The Samurai make the Dark Legion pay dearly for each Mishiman that falls, but things start to change when the thunderous footsteps and unearthly roar of the Mercurian Maculators appear on the other side of the bridge.
