Cliffside Ruins
« on: June 29, 2009, 02:02:43 PM »
This may be my largest terrain project evar!!!!!!!111

CC on theminiaturespage.com posted a link to some awesome Martian Ruins, so I am working with the art to make something that is gameable.  Note, I am using AT-43 figures for scale, but it would work with anything.  I could see Swampies living here actually.  The piece is made to be practical and useable on teh game table and not just a pretty piece, though it should make a steller backdrop as well.

I am not too far yet, but here we go.

Later,
Glenn

That looks like a serious piece of terrain. Keep us posted please.

Consider it done, here is todays work:

Tomorrow will be more pretty details, and the addition of the cork to make up more rock formations.
After that is final details, plastercoating and painting.

Alright, I am missing my clay, so the statues are not yet present, also, I am rather unthrilled with the paint job, I need to work out some better colors for it.

Well done!
VeezCon products:  Not as good as if they had been actually produced by a real figure company, but better than using your shoe to proxy with...sort of!

Looks very good Glenn. Will look better with a few little touches.A few boxes or barrels would help make it look lived in.Maybe some banners to brighten it up.
What sort of statues are you going to be doing for it?

Good Lord Glenn!  That's very creative.  I will admit that I'm not that creative/talented at terrain.  I will also admit that I'm going to copy some of your ideas shamelessly. ;D

On the large section supported by the pillars will be a face of some sort, something rather vague.
There will be other simple statues adorning a few locations.  And there will be no barrels or such to make it look lived in, it is meant to be abandoned.  Also, if I want that look, I'll mount them separately.

I think that what it's missing is a brighter layer of highlights on the texture and raised areas - the depth of the model is somewhat lessened by the 'flat' paint job.  By which I mean, the way that the whole model is painted in a similar paint scheme.  If you use the same colors but with a bit of white (or off-white) added, and drybrush the edges of the different layers, I think it'll really make the whole model 'pop' a bit more.

Not to criticize your great work (and I love the way you've mixed red in with the grays on the stone!), this is just meant to be friendly and hopefully constructive advice.  The project looks excellent, I think it just needs some slight tweaking.

Wow! :o This is awesome!
I love that it is "generic" enough that you could play many different types of games with it... from Chronopia to Mutant Chronicles or whatever you want. And generic is not a bad thing, I love stuff that can be used with as many games as possible. The more gaming the merrier!
This is truly cool and thanks for sharing.

Glen,

I would only suggest that you texture the "carved" rock smoother and use a different paint scheme for them.  Like the same colors just lighter.
Nice looking terrain and you whipped that thing out pretty fast.
