Terrain Ideas
« on: March 27, 2009, 08:48:13 AM »
Just wanted to start a new topic- Terrain ideas

I was looking on e-bay and noticed a neat item - Magic Water

I have used other "water" products with mixed results.
Clear glue works in small areas, but if you want a swamp/jungle board this looks to be the best product IMHO.
I have also tried the bags of plastic beads that you melt and pour onto your game table. What a pain to have to heat it up to melt and pour on. I still have several scars to prove that the melting point of these "pellets" is very high and it also smells alot.

Has anyone tried this "magic water"

Apology in advance if you brought this up on the board before.

I also like the way Dragon62's terrain looks.

He used large round bases and adds small HO pine trees (2-5 inches high). I plan on copying what he does and adding some ground cover/stones/broken slate and painting to taste then spraying with matte/flat protective spray.

This tech can also be used for jungle board. I plan on using the three fish tank plant "mats" for aquariums and cutting off 3-4 per round base adding ground cover etc.

I saw the "mats" of aquarium plants at the local Petco.

Of course the indestructable terrain of doom Dave and I made (a Talamania regular) will have it's own entry here later.

I have some magic water; it seems to be good stuff if it's the same product. The only two problems are 1) it comes out more like clear rubber than solid plastic, and it does not mix well with paint; it produced a foamy substance.  Eventually I want to use it to fill the gap in  my river board.
VeezCon products:  Not as good as if they had been actually produced by a real figure company, but better than using your shoe to proxy with...sort of!

Does it por of come out like 45 day old milk?

Also is it worth the price?

1) Kinda
2) Not really; for the same money you can buy the resin I make the crystals out of and the accelerant, expirement a little to find the formula that works,  mix in colors from paint (although be careful-a little goes a long way) and still have a pretty solid water feature.

Topic shift...

I was at Recruits, playing Ambush Z and noticed how nice the city's streets looked.  Shawn of Ambush Alley Games told me a super cheap, but great looking way to make street terrain:

Go to Lowe's or some equivalent hardware store.

Buy a roll of black drawer liner...the rubbery grip kind.  It comes in a 12" by 6' roll for something like $4.

Cut it out to fit whatever you want to do...streets, intersections, parking lots, etc.

Drybrush some like shades of gray onto the strips to create tire wear and use a fine point pen for cracks.

For lane lines, he used white car pinstriping you can find at just about any Wal-Mart or car parts store.

Voila!  A ton of roads for under $10!

I, personally, was a slacker and did not take pics, but I'm fairly sure that there were some pics taken by the Recruits photo guy.  As soon as they are posted, I'll copy the the links to here.

Any update please?

Anyone else have some terrain pics or ideas?

I am starting a project to biuld a 4x6 jungle board to be used at the next Talamania (IV). Nothing is wrong with the one we use just wanted to give it a try. Any ideas. I was thinking of using the indestructable foam Dave and I have used in the past and filling the rest of the table with the magic water or equivalent for the swamp effect.

I'm still waiting on the Recruits site to post their pics.  When that comes through, I'll post them here.

As for your jungle...fish tank plants and clear two-part epoxy for the water.  Easy, peasy!

That'll work. Thanks for the pics/link. Awesome then still is now. The board may be on the expensive side (the one I was thinking about) but the foam I will use can have a truck run over it and still be OK. Believe me I did (run a truck over my terrain). If you want to see the terrain foam Dava and I use, go to Talamania and it will be used there on the open table.
