This Week in Geekdom 8/27
« on: August 27, 2008, 09:08:12 AM »
I've noticed things are a bit slow here on the boards so I though I'd get the juices going with a new discussion.  The topic:

Memories of Tron
What are your memories of how Tron affected your life (geek or otherwise).  What were your favorite bits?  Feel free to talk amongst yourselves.
VeezCon products:  Not as good as if they had been actually produced by a real figure company, but better than using your shoe to proxy with...sort of!

Memories.

I was programming in dos around this time. Nothing big just stuff. Playing on a texas instr game counsel I believe.

I liked the arcade game still today.

The neon in the movie was pretty neat IMHO. Fight scenes ok because different formats.

Makes you wonder what is really happening in the computer.

I loved the car race best hands down-- but I had a blast playing the tron game int he arcades (the one with multiple boards).  Also, I remember just as the movie was starting, my bud turned to me and said "if this is a Disney movie I'm leaving." (because he was a big shot teenager and too mature for such kid's stuff). Sure enough the first credit up was Disney's!  He got up to go, but I coaxed him to stay and watch, and he loved it!

yes, this film is awsome..

i esp. liked the cyberspace-depicturing. until jonny mnonic it is unrivaled, i think..

@disney: their films are a bit flat (including tron..) but they inlcude gems, like e.g. "the black hole"īs ship in whole..

The movie was a lot of fun, and had some really cutting edge special effects.

Certainly a good time.

As for affecting me, I was an uber-geek long before Tron came on the scene.  In fact, White Box Dungeons and Dragons was the first major signpost on my long geek journey.

My CRS is kickin' in, big time.  It's been so long since I've seen it, and I don't know if I saw the whole thing.  Sigh.
May the Dark Lords of Lead-Free Pewter smile kindly upon you.

I got in with the basic and expert rule boxes. Contained a module in each.

I think B2 in the basic and X1 in the expert.

Spent many a lost weekend during middle school and early high school.

Yes - The one I had came with B1 -

Needless to say our entire party nearly died at the hands of a half-dozen wandering monster orcs within the first 50' of that long entry corridor lined with tell-tale alcoves...and we loved every minute of it.

Hold on to those and never let them go. I sold all my old stuff on e-bay over two years ago for store credit. Of course I bought some good stuff, but still wish I held on to it.

Okay - now you're making me bust out some serious old school--

Remember these bad boys?

The quest for Wave, Whelm, and Blackrazor!

Yeah, those were the good ol day.  When a higher AC was a bad thing!

A trip down memory lane.

Lucky One,  That is good advice.  I plan on keeping these as my retirement plan!  Think of what they will be worth when I can finally afford to retire in 2040! :)

And, maybe I can find an old copy of Swords and Spells, and Chainmail to go with the old White Box.
