Ultimate Ultimate Warzone
« on: July 21, 2008, 03:57:13 AM »
Situation:
The original run of UWZ had some production errors in it-no insult to anyone is meant by this, it was a labor of love and it is what it is.  The core rulebook is no longer being printed but somewhere (presumably with Thom) is the original PDF version.  Many errors/errata/rules clarifications have already been identified and agreed to by the members of the forum.

Proposal:
Key members of the site (i.e. volunteers) receive a copy of the original and edit their assigned portion (i.e. take 10-50 pages and correct the minor errors, fill in missing information, correct errata) and submit it back to Thom for an Ulimate UWZ version than a kind volunteer can hang on their site for download.

Something to bandy about.  This is not meant to supercede the work of the designers-their names will still be on it, it is just our way of giving it the final polish it needs to make it perfect.

I suggest we start with Roach Comapany - the former ManitouJoe. He was one of if not the main editior of UWZ so him and/or Thom would be the ones most logically to have the proof copies.

There is one more or less insurmountable problem - Paradox owns the rights to UWZ and would probably frown on a re-edit and release, even if it was a fan based effort released as freeware.

TK,

I know that we have gone around the bend several times with this discussion, but I thought Paradox only owns the Mutant Chronicles IP.

Clarification is welcome.

They own the IP rights for the Mutant Chronicles universe and everything in it that was not created by Exclesior. However things that were created by Exclesior that were based off the material already present is also I believe owned by Paradox when they pulled the rights form Thom. Basically the universe, the corporations, the Dark Legions are all Paradox. While you could create a game set in our solar system based on multi-national corporations and a struggle between good and evil you could not use the specific breakdowns or concepts of the Mutant Chronicles Universe. Anyone wanting to create a 28 mm TTG based on Warzone and Mutant CHronicles has to pay Paradox for the privelege as I understand it. That's why I worked up an alternate fluff in case I decide to try anything.

Talking to a lawyer and professional the ethicist the ultimate correct answer is to find who owns the copyright and obtain permission from them.

That's not to say I would not mind doing some preliminary work first, you know, until we get permission.

Count me in too, since I was in the Beta team of UWZ and would like to go over some stuff that really should have been looked at in the Alpha stages of the game.

Another thing to consider (IMO) is taking a look at the point costs to unit effectiveness and unit restrictions.

Several units have been mentioned on these forums as being as too powerful (e.g. Mounted Hussars) or too weak for their point costs (e.g. several Bhood units).

To all willing participants; the goal of this project is not to re-write rules or to fix perceived imbalances; the goal is to make errata  changes, correct misspellings, and insert approved clarifications where needed.  All I am wanting to do is polish the existing product.  I feel in doing so we are not stepping too hard on what is, like it or not, Paradox Entertainment's property.
