Ophidian ?
« on: December 14, 2007, 10:12:17 AM »
Hey,  We are getting ready for a large 2 part battle around the New Year, and I have a question.  The Ophidian can spend an action to spit venom.  My question is can they do this more than once per activation?

The way the book tells it, they can. Being a twelve damage residual attack, I thought this was a bit much, especially from a flyer.  Just wanted to check.  Thanks

It's a great model, and like anything in this game, effective when used well.  The flyer with a residual damage ranged attack is balanced by the fact that its RC is not that high, nor is its range all that long.  I've seen them beat up on me, and I've seen them shot from the sky.  Good times.

Anyway, spit every action and take out those individuals!!  Don't press your luck against a whole troop of missiles unless you've got a unit in their face.  Now roll some dice!!

Okay......so, does the opidian have to roll RC to hit with spit?  I thought it was a automatic sort of thing like alot of SA.  Enquiring minds need to know.

If I recall correctly, he does not have to roll to hit. I remember this being discussed in a thread a long time ago. I will see if I can locate it.

it addition to rolling to hit, i read it as it can target 1 individual model, whether it be part of a warband or an individual.  also, can he use it in cc?  id say not but it is a little vague

Troy, Thom cleared up the CC in the FAQ.  Yes, it can use its spit in CC.

Ok DoW got to the CC part before I did, so here's my take on the other factors:

1. Yes, per the FAQ, it does not specifically state it cannot be used in CC, as opposed to the Venom Spawn. So he may spit in CC.

2. The Spit is not a Ranged Weapon, it is a Special Ability, which abilities always over-ride the rules, and it does not have a ROF as regular Ranged Weapons do. So since it is a special rule, normal targeting rules do not apply, and it may spit at any one model within 12".

3. Also, since it is a Special Ability, not a ranged attack, and the rules for the spit do not state that he must roll to hit, it is simply the cost of one action. This compensates for the limited range of the spit, and the stats of the Ophidian itself: average at best and an AR of 16 oft makes it a pincushion.

Again, that's just how I see it. For what it's worth.

Any time.  I'm not official by any means that's just how I interpret it. I'm open to debate on those who disagree.

The last time I played against Thom's Stygian, his Ophidian was rolling to hit.  When he twentied out, he joked that it was "a hairball stuck in its throat."

Now Thom doesn't always remember the rules, even his own rules, so take it with the usual grain of salt.  He was rolling to hit, but shield modifiers didn't apply as it's kind of like an AOE attack on a single model; it's a big loogie.

OK, it states in the model profile that the Ophidian cannot run.  My question is does this apply to "fast fly"?  We have always interpreted it that the cannot run is for ground only, but I have been wrong before. ::)
