Can Greymourns drop the mortar?

"Crewmen must stay in base contact with each other to fire the weapon. The crewmen move as a unit, with each using an action to move the group the mortar's MV stat in inches"
They must stay in base contact with each other always or just if they want to shoot? Then they can avoid moving together? Can they ever use the personal MV rating (4)? Then why is it there?

In my opinion, the mortar is associated armament and cannot be dropped.
