The Tenth Planet
« on: October 02, 2005, 06:47:30 AM »
Has anyone heard that there is something out there in the Kuiper belt that scientists are debating calling a tenth planet?  The tentative name is (and I'm not making this up) Xena.

Somewhere the Dark Soul is cackling.

Is it really that surprising that they name astronomical objects after popular fantasy or sci-fi shows?

I mean there is probably a very high correlation between scientists and fantasy/SF geeks.

Considering that almost all of the early greats in Sci-fi were scientists, it doesn't surprise me.  (Asimov, Sturgeon, Clark, etc)

I'm surprised they didn't nake the planet after a SF writer.   Although I remember reading an article on Nasa.gov where they said that Xena was a tentative name, and they were thinking about having people vote on the name.

Which means we have to push the name Nero with a vengeance.  Or do some creative editing when the final name comes out.

Veez:  See-they predicted it in this book!
Random Person:  Dude, you drew a line through "Nero" and hand wrote "Aphrodite".
Veez:  No way, it, uh, came that way to give it that back room press look!
