VULKAN PLAYTEST 2006.10.20
« on: October 20, 2006, 12:34:27 PM »
Here is the first pic of the general board setup.  We will start easy.

Premise:  On a hot and hazy summer's morning on Venus, a raiding party is dispatched to disable/level/seize a Supply Depot/Manufacturing Plant/Settlement.  Force 1 is attempting to respond to the raid.  Force 2 is the raiding party.
Duration:  6 Turns
Environmental Rules:  Haze (-1 RC per Range Band beyond SR; i.e.:  -1 RC at MR, -2 RC at LR and -3 RC at ER)
Deployment:  12" Deep, 6" from either side.
Objective:  At the end of Turn 6, calculate Victory Points using Tounament Points System, plus the following:

 - Raiding Party:  Enter* center building and, with at least one model, spend an entire turn destroying communications/stores/civilian personnel...+1 VP
 - Raiding Party:  Find important civilian individual and kidnap* (get off board via Friendly DZ)...+1 VP
 - Defense Force:  Prevent raiding party from succeeding in destruction mission and/or kidnap mission...+1 VP each

* - Enter and destroy:  All buildings are accessible, though the doors are "locked" for the raiders.  Use 15.1 Terrain Options (pp. 96-97) for destruction of Treated Timber doors.  They are not locked for the defender, but, with the exception of the center building, there are designed for SZ 2 models, only.  Defender still must spend an AC to open a door, and another to close (if desired).  Doors left open by the defender may be exploited by the raider.
* - Kidnap:  Four markers will be randomly placed (2 per player).  Markers may not be placed in buildings, nor may they be placed within 6" of either DZ.  Markers do not move until captured.  One will be the important individual.  Neither player will know which marker is the individual.  In order to capture, spend an AC in base contact with marker.  In oreder to get VP, marker must be escorted off board through friendly Deployment Zone.

If there are any questions, feel free to ask, along the way.  I will try to update this before and after the battle, with pics, and a full summary.

(Yes, I know - I need to get my terrain painted - thanks for noticing)

Little overcrowded with terrain pieces to test the Vulkans. Removing two  terrain pieces (the black building[?] near those white rocks / white building, and those grey tanks) can change the outcome of this battle.
I not familiar with the term “Tournament Points System”. Some info would be appreciated.
Isn’t the silver thing in the right lower corner of the table  a cpu radiator? I could have sworn, that I’ve seen a VHS tape somewhere on this table. :P

I think that first line of Heretyk's statement, sums up the problem concerning Vulkans. For the group that Dave, Jeff and I play with that is a standard level of terrain. I have seen pics from some of the overseas players where there are large open spaces in the middle of the board so that you can start shooting from the first activation. In that enviornment Vulkans would be unstoppable as would most Bauhaus units with the Panzernacker AR. If you are going to test the Vulkans you have to use all kinds of terrain amounts. Not just ones to limit the Vulkans and not just ones where they can move once and fire away for the rest of the game.

On the above table, there are a couple of long fire lanes for the Vulkans to take advantage of but most of the paths from what I see bring the battle to MR and below.

I think the Vulkans are fine as they are. Are they awesome? YES Are they underpriced? IMO NO As Ive read on here from a couple of people, if someone wants to bring an all Vulkan  army, fine, Ill say congrats on the win and go have a beer while I wait for another game.  Most gamers that I have played against wouldnt do that. They play for the fun and enjoyment of the people they are playing with. Ive faced some very difficult force lists <especially from Dragon62 and Archer> but they used imagination and fluff to design their forces.

Is the UWZ system perfect, No But I think we all agree that its one of the best systems out there, which is why we are all here, still talking about and playing an unsupported game.

Thank you, Thank you very much

Do you play the Vulcan army against a "normal force" or against a force wich is on an equal powerlevel? As i understand the test both forces will be on a high powerlevel. I'm interessted in the chances of a player with a normal rounded force of different types of grunt, elite and support units (no individuals or unit double in the force).

Most times unless its requested Dave doesnt use more than a squad or two< with higher point  totals> of Vulkans in his force. I play against him with "normal" forces and do well. Our last battle I used DL with only one HMG and one AC in the force and took out two of his Vulkans <I believe he had 4> before the game ended due to the turn limit.

Good eyes!  Yeah, it's a radiator, and there are about 9 VHS tapes on the table.  As for the density of terrain, this is about normal, for us.  There are two or three fire corridors for the Vulkans, but, only if exploited properly.

I will, gladly, test that theory, too, Ruther.  :)
