On destroyers and much cc hugeness
« on: September 28, 2005, 11:27:30 AM »
I recently saw Destroyers fielded for the first time, man they are just incredible. They have high rc, high cc, an assualt rifle, sweep, 2 wounds, high armor, enhanced charge, cc training, and probably other stuff i am forgetting and they cost 33.

One squad sat it in the back, the other squad was in the thick of the biggest close combat mess I have ever seen. Both squads just dominated.

About the close combat mess, all this was in one big mess:

Stahler
Angel of Mercy
Squad of Destroyers
Squad of Crucifiers
Squad of Sacred Warriors
very breifly, an ezoghoul (had many wounds on it when entering)
very breifly, a biogiant (had many wounds on it when entering)
Inquisitor

The only thing that survived was the Destroyers (almost the whole squad, with maybe one dead and two wounded). The sweep really stunk, my SW dropped like flies.

Anyways, just thought id point out how awesome destroyers are, i know they make my (bh) elite squads look silly (a destroyer is as good as a pilgrim at RC, as good at CC as a fury elite, and has higher armor then either plus an additional wound). I sure hope they have a squad size limit that is low, seems like a good way to keep them balanced.

Tight game, only had three guys left at the end.

pound for pound they're probably one of the single most versitle units in the game.  At least they're at the top for most flexible.  Try coupling them with an Algeroth force and toss some spells onto them to make them even more ferocious in CC.

Since my DL army is primary cultist, they are one of my favorites.  I always try to include a squad of Destroyers in any DL army that I plan.  BTW, in UWZ its 38 points each for for the destroyers and 39 for the Leader and the squad size is 3-4 Destroyers plus 1 required leader.  Make sure you buy smoke for the leaders Underbarrel Grenade Launcher.

Another option for getting them into the thick of things quickly is to take the Supreme Necromagus as a support option and for his summoned bodyguards, use the Void Golems which act as a gate.

Or even better, getting a squad or two of Templars for fire support and one of the Nepharites of Ilian with voidgate as a taxi. Oh - and a Havoc Grenade instead of smoke, a great thing to use together with the Dark Lightning on the Nepharite.

I love destroyers, however Its rare that I actually field them.  When I play DL I play Muawijhe, and the destroyers are a perfect fit, they can provide some much needed fire support/smoke while advancing, but still get in the thick of it when my Ezoghoul led Spear of Karnophage break the opposing lines.  The problem is not with the destroyers but with the fact that you have to take a squad of Initiates to qualify for them, and I can always think of better use for my points on the Muawijhe list than taking initiates, which unfortunately rules out Destroyers.
