Title: Conversion Showoff!
Post by: joshuaslater on February 09, 2006, 12:15:00 PM
Conversion Showoff!
Here's a chance to show your creative conversions for both Warzone and Chronopia.  There are no prizes but a chance to show your work, and spur others on the forum to try new things and improve their skills.  This event will feature more latitude in that you can convert/sculpt using any model, so long as it is based on a RECOGNIZABLE  EE product (scratchbuilding is ok too).   The idea is to create new troops, fill in a model that hasn't been produced yet, or make changes to existing models/troops. The conversions can be small such as repositioning an arm or adding a new weapon to rebuilding the entire model. The model should also be painted.

In progress pics so that other can see how you've done it is also appreciated.

You may enter as many times as you want. The idea is to encourage new ideas after all.

All pics should be posted to the appropriate Chronopia/Warzone painting section on the forum, by March 15th.  The moderators will either create a poll so we can vote for favorites, or judge them.  Winners will receive bragging rights, and will obviously have a cool model to field whenever they want.

Remember to follow all safety instructions and don't jam the pin vice into your thumb, or get superglue in your eyes.  Also be careful with the hobby knives.  I've made too many blood sacrifices to the Dark Lords of Lead-Free Pewter myself.  Now get busy.

Is it ok if I superglue my eyes for my own personal amusement?
:p

Most everyone on this forum knows I'm not the swiftest cat, even on a good day; whatever modelling disaster can strike has hit me--I've done it all.  The drill in the finger, the hobby knife cut so deep my first coat of primer is blood, and yes, don't rub your eyes by accident, after handling superglue.

Doing it on purpose is your own business, and I'm the last person to deny you your own masochistic pleasure.  Cheers.

So what are all of you planning to do?

I'm going to do a Elite Trooper Decurion based on the Trooper Medic. Just a weapon swap to start with and maybe a head swap as well.

I've done some SIMPLE conversions in the past--just for a little variety and to also fill in gaps for previously unsculpted models.  Examples:

I took a Centurion and rotated his arm and pistol 90 degrees so that he was shooting gangster style!

I took an OLD dremel bit and added it to the PV Sgt after shaving the shotgun down and made it into a 2nd Edition Chausseur Grenade Launcher specialist.  Topkick now owns this guy.

I also took a Fury Elite Sergeant and chopped his head and one shoulder pad off and placed it on the 1.5" base of the Angel of Fury to make a bloody mess on the ground.  It was a gruesome Christmas present for a friend who plays Muawijhe.

I also took a redemption assassin and turned him into a 2nd edition RL Specialist.  You may say blasphemy when I tell you I used a Multi-Melta from that other game as the RL but it was the only bit I had at the time that looked right.  I then added a punisher pistol to his other hand because in 2nd Edition that is all the RL specialist had--and the humorous story behind it is that my RL once took out my buddy's Meka with JUST the pistol.

I took a Pilgrim (new sculpt) and cut off his AR and added a Gehenna puker.  That one turned out really cool, but I haven't painted it yet.  I was always adamant that they should have a FT specialist!  PIPEDREAM!?

I converted a spare Blade Maiden into an RPG character for a friend.  It was easy.  Cut off the sword, added the haft of a axe and then made a dangly bit for the flail head.  Then slapped a shield on her other arm and VOILA!  There was his Favoured Soul of Hextor!  If you don't play 3.5 then that reference will be lost on you.  Sorry...

I probably have done more but that is all I can think of now.

If you still have the pictures of those conversions you should post them (I can host them for you if you want). The Angel of Mercy with the severed head was particularily nice.

My contribution to the Conversion Showoff.

The arm and the hat is made of green stuff and the weapon is from a Mishima fig.

I'd pained me to do it, but the mini was a B-day present for a good friend.  It's the head and shoulder off of a fury elite sergeant.

Post by: Jase on April 11, 2007, 02:51:45 AM
That's pretty funky - lots of detail that draws the eye.

One conversion was for a squad I was doing, I only managed one fig. Idea came from an old Chronicles of the warzone mag (issue 7,8 or 9) for Imperial Trench assault troops. These were armed with either two shot gas sprayers or a flamethrower (both template weapons, totally nasty in a confined space). I took the Trencher HMG and hacked, chopped and filed 50% of the Charger off, leaving the handgrip sections and top. With a bit of milliput and glue, I added the fuel cylinder and nozzles part of a plastic terminator heavy flamer from Space Hulk.

Looks pretty decent as figures go and a darn shame that a Trencher squad doesn't include a gas or flame thrower option (not counting storm trenchers).

Sorry about the crappy photo, its a scan. Plus my painting has improved a hell of a lot.

Here's one I did a few years ago.

The Cancer Mounted Heavy Machine Gun

I built him using mostly Robogear parts from Tehnolog.  The humanoid torso was a figure from a Milton Bradley game called BattleBall, whom I clipped off at the waist and snipped his arms off.  The crab claws were some bitz from an OOP game called Ronin.

I remember seeing it on Minirealms (moment of silence for a lost board)

It captures the look and flair of the fluff like nothing else!

I had been looking at the technolog spider for the bases but what I really wish is to get my hands on the claws!
I think we would all like to see more pics of your stuff.

Yeah, the guns are a bit big.  However anything smaller would just seem undersized for this model.  Besides this is The Mutant Chronicles, home of big guns and bigger shoulderpads!

The Recitors were pretty easy Iīd say...

If you havre a good resource of old style Hussar Seargeants.....
My problem was that I only could lay hands on the Seargeant #2 with the opened visor and had to invent a possibility to let them at least look all a bit different.
Nr. one was to use one #1 Seargeant I had left and that left 3 minis to go looking all the same (what I personally dislike).
The holding of the weapon is still the same because itīs basically the same model with another head...
And through to the form of the model itīs very (very and more times..) hard to cut the weapons off and leave them whole to put them back in other positions, especially
with the old alloy they used for the casting of the minis. It was way harder than the new one and the models were cast much thicker.

So hereīs what I did to them with my little scalpell ( muuuaahahahahahah ;D, sounds a bit frankensteinish...)):

I cut off the spike of the helmet and smoothed it witrh a file.
For getting two with closed visors I cut one off of a model with an opened one, shortened the face of the mini and glued the visor back, so that I got a deformed head with a closed visor.
Further they had to get their cloaks and I decided to do 2 with hoods up and two with them down (naturally one opened and one closed visor of each ;-) and the problem with the deformed head was solved; got a drawn up hood).
I used milliput for the cloaks and went pretty easy. Just cut out roughly the form of a flattened piece of milliput and then formed a minicloak. I modelled it to the necks of the minis, stabilized them in their fold (coming out good and easy, because mlliput isnt deformable that easy and keeps the given form) with wettened pieces of rubber foam and voilá, after hardeneing the cloaks were ready.
Only had to choose which way they should fall while forming them.
After drying I used a roll of magic-sculpt to form the fur and punched it with the scalpel for the relief before drying.
All in all Iīd say 15 min. per model

The ministry Executioner was a bit more work.....

Filed away the parts on the back with the big Brotherhood symbol, drilled a hole through his hand, cut off half of his head and cut out the shoulders.
That was my "raw" working material.
The shoulderpads I got from a ducal HMG plastic mini.
The face is half of a ducal regularīs face.
The Axe is the shaft of a Q-tip and the head a sculpt from magic-sculpt filed thin.
The other parts of the cloak, the hood again formed from milliput.

Being too cheap to buy one, and not having the time to search one I out, I decided to make a conversion of Valerie Duavl. I used an Etoiles Mortant trooper, cut off the Punisher sword, flipped the pommel around to the top of her fist, added a rod and put a knife blade on the end (old 40K piece, maybe?), and attached the muzzle-flash (available from Armorcast). I was happy with how the bodysuit and muzzle-flash effect painting turned out, but after looking at the photos, I think I'm going to go back and highlight the leather parts some more. Here are some pics:

I thought flocking the bases as that was pure standard and many did it that way....
Iīm not very good at sculpting bases as oftenly seen in the game that might not be named and done as I did itīs pretty cheap and absolutely easy.
2 hours time for flocking about 30 models at a price of approx. $6 and flocking material left for about another 80 minis.

Yes, you are correct. If you take the time paint a model the bases have to be finished also. I was commenting on the colors used on the bases/flock etc. They look much different than what people use around here.

Aaaah now I get it!

I wanted something different and with the coming autumn I thought it wuld be nice to have it a bit that way, so I mixed the natural green with a bit of gravel brown and I got the displayed one.

On my Brotherhood army I used a more garish yellow flocking because I tend to forget models on the field and so they are much better visible ;-)

Does it mean, that you change the base decoration for our next game in winter into something snowy white  ;)

But by seeing your pics I can understand why it took a little longer to finish your models.

Aaaaahm, I think not..... But it would be pretty easy to enhance them that way. Theres the decoration spray for windows for a snow effect.
Target the base and give it a good shot and voilá, you got a water soluble winter coat on your base ;-)
Iīll think on it....
