Title: 15mm Elves
Post by: Glenn M on April 08, 2011, 03:54:15 PM
To save space and some money, my brother and I have decided to switch to 15mm for a majority of our gaming (save stuff like Battletech and Starmada) but I couldn't leave behind my Chronopia.  Thankfully, Splintered Lights Dark Elves are a darn close match.  I currently have enough figures for 6 Dragonbane Knights, 2 units of archers (Crossbows, but close enough), 2, units of Swordsmen (Or Axemen as the figures have 2-handed swords) and 2 units of Spearmen.  As well as a pile of random individuals, including 2 different lotus eaters.  One of which looks markedly like the Red Lotus Eater.

To see how close I could get, check this out (forgive the base, I didn't get there yet, I was a little excited at how well it turned out.)

And now here is about 1/3 of the total figures, completed and ready to roll.

First we have a Lotus Eater and a kitty cat.  And No, I do not know why I have a kitty cat in my army.

Next we have a unit of Swordsmen.

And Finally a unit of Spearmen.

Well, I am making a 2x2 Martian board for my Sci-Fi.  I've been pondering a 2x2 fantasy city board as well.  But I am not really sure yet what I'll be making for fantasy, the nice thing about the smaller figures though is that a 2x2 board is plenty of space.  Just knock the measurements down to CM instead of inches and a 2x2 board is suddenly huge.

My only issue with my elves is there are no appropriate figures for Milita, Axemen (Or swordsmen depending on your perspective), and the specialty troops.  But, I asked Splintered Light about them, and they do intend to make an all female unit and corsair style units.  That should give me a lot more options in the future.  For now I'll just have to make do with what is available.

Thanks guys.  I am having a bit of a run-in with the spearmen though, I only get one leader per pack of 12.  Yeah that's all she wrote.  I asked if there was a way to get single leaders, but I can't for the spearmen due to the way they are cast.  I am currently pondering alternatives.  My best bet may simply be to mount a standard on one of them.  One of those small Samurai standards.  Another option would be to take the spear off of a spearmen and swap it with the 2 sword wielding dude.  Giving him a sword and Spear.

I dunno.

Anyways, thanks for the compliments.  I'll probably have the second batch done in a few days.

Glenn, have you looked into Eureka Miniatures 18mm Fantasy models???

They have their Elves of the Lofty Spire army, which has got archers and some other spearmen dudes that I think would mix well with what you are doing.

Cheers.

I am not a big fan of them actually, also, they are apparently rather big and would not scale well.

Anyways, I whipped up two more squads and two more characters.
Here are some complete army shots.

Great work! Now the real question is, now that you have your 15mm Elven force for Chronopia, what army is next? You'll need an army to pit them against, so I'm wondering which it will be and what miniatures you will use for them?

Delthos, well, my nephew is getting a Meercat army in 15mm, we'll just sub them for another army.  Also my brother is getting a Lizardmen force.
So we'll have plenty of guys to kill.

Thanks for the complements, hopefully I'll get the others done soon.

Excellent stuff!

Its refreshing to be able to play a decent sized game on a small board!

How did you make it? I am currently using vinyl floor tiles which are quick and easy but not too visually impressive!

All the best!

A 2x2 sheet of MDF.  Hills cut from insulation board, edged with tree bark to make the cliff face.  Then spackled to fill in any gaps, which there were lots.  Then I glued down a good layer of sand, painted it then flocked.

Pretty easy actually.
