Title: Industrial Modular Terrain Board
Post by: luckyone on April 13, 2010, 09:24:56 AM
Just wanted everyone to know I am working on a modular terrain board to be completed prior to Talamania V (Insert official title here).

The board will be 4' x 4' Industrial (active).

It will consist of 4 18" by 18" sections that can rotate 360 degrees, 13 6" x 6" sections (360 degrees) and 30 3" by 6" sections (180 degrees).

The 4 18" x 18" sections will be centered in each 2x2 section of the board. I will attached a file to help explain it all (as soon as I figure out how). I am sure it will not be complicated to do.

The 6x6 and 3x6 board pieces will be made out of Hirst Art molds and the 18" x 18" pieces will be made of 3/8 wood board with various building pieces on it (mainly Hirst Arts molds).

I have purchased 5 molds for this and other projects and plan on purchasing 5 additional ones soon. (needed to complete this and other projects).

I would like to post progress here and get your feedback if possible.

I usually cast up to 3 molds over night and I think I have figured out most of the details needed to complete the project.

Because I can rotate the board pieces with a little math it has the following variations - (4x4x4x13x13x4x30x30x2) that would be 77,875,200 different ignoring the fact that 2 3x6 boards can fit into the 6x6 slots.

This sounds like a very good idea.A bit on the large side and might get a bit daughnting at times.I am sure the end result will be well worth it though. The pipe line sets they do in plastic might come in handy too.

Yes the plastic ones would work also. I have the molds and alot of casting material on hand (minus the 5 molds I will purchase in May) so I am kinda committed to moving forward with what I got. Thanks for the tip BTW.

I have been casting 2-4 molds per evening (when home of course).

It is going to take alot more castings to complete this project. I have a good start and will purchase 5 more molds (2 for this project) soon.

nice. looks like it will be fitting to the wz universe:  industrial complexes the megacorps fight over.

Post by: luckyone on April 16, 2010, 08:20:42 AM
Thanks,

I plan on priming them with the good stuff - "The Army Painter" uniform grey and staining them black with either black satin stain or G.W. black wash. I am leaning towards the G.W. wash although it is more expensive. I like the way it turns out and I will use the stain on all the metal floors (which cover all 4' x 4').

I know this will be a long and time consuming project, but once completed think of all the variations the modular table will be able to have. Every time you play you can play on a different table.

The pieces you have done so far look great. You should knock a few extra ones up and sell them. That way you could get the cash for the other moulds.

Not a bad idea. I did try to sell some of my CD sized terrain I built but did not have any buyers yet. I will most likely post here first to see if anyone wants some pieces.

I finished a new piece last night - Sediment tank.
I also completed the painting on the first two industrial pieces.

Exactly what I was thinking. I talked to Dodger about this idea last weekend. Would work great on CD sized bases. I have made up some already in another thread - terrain ideas under Warzone section.

Oh, I thought you said with CD bases. OK I will have both CD sized and full size terrain available for sale/trade.

Any piece I make for the board will be available for purchase.

As for the name of Talamania V -- I humbly suggest "The Big Kahuna Strikes Back". There is a story and inside joke to that name....ask Thom when you see him on the forums  ;D

Cool, I am sure I will get a kick out of the story.

I was thinking also:

"The environment strikes back"

or

"Revenge of the d20"

I was able to assemble the fourth terrain piece last night. 2 pieces are 100% completed (just have to paint the shut off valves and add control panels).

I should be able to work on these again tonight.

To actually start on the 18" x 18" boards (4 total) I really need a good weekend without the wife and kids to assemble the components in the garage. I also will need the next molds from Hirst Arts to complete the 4' x 4' terrain board.

I will continue to assemble and keep working on it. It will take some time but it is worth it.

Thanks Josh.

I have now:

3 finished pieces
1 wash stage
1 assembled ready for primer
1 being assembled

Pictures soon

Update:

5 finished pieces
2 washed 100%
1 fully assembled

After these 8 are 100% complete, I will have enough to start the first of four 18" x 18" modular terrain pieces. I will need another 2 molds (of the next 5 I am purchasing next month) to complete the board. The floors will be painted a different color. I wanted to keep everything grey/metallic but I think it would be better to paint the floor a different color. Most likely I will spray with a grey primer, wash with a black satin stain and then dry-brush with either a orange/earth tone with silver/metallic mixed in or a 50/50 mixture of Dwarf Bronze/Burnished gold. I saw these color schemes on the Hirst Arts website (new Space Hulk floor plans etc).

Another decision I have to make is on the other 3x6 and 6x6 floor pieces. I want to permanently place terrain on these (at least a good majority of them). I do not want the pipes I spent a lot of time on to move/tip over during a game. The issue I have is this would limit the set up variations for these pieces and sometimes the game dictates less or more terrain on the board. I think if I did permanently mount the floor pieces with terrain and left some without, the players could place them according to the game situation. I would then have to make additional floor pieces. Not a huge deal but I want this finished for Talamania V.

Finished all 8 pieces last night. Pictures of last piece and all 8 in storage to be posted soon. I was able to pour all 5 molds at once last night. I will limit it to 2-3 molds per session from now on. I just wanted to see if I had enough room to do all 5 molds.

I will continue to pour casts to replenish what I used for the terrain pieces and start to stockpile the ones I need for the floors and future industrial pieces.

The fun continues.

Continuing to cast all 5 molds at a time. Fun fun fun

I will cut it down to 2-3 a night.

I am ordering only 3 molds now (fundage issues) but enough to complete this project of course.

I will start to assemble the floor and outer shells for the first 18" x 18" terrain piece soon.

It looks like at least one piece will fit nicely on the 3 x 6 sections, 3 pieces on the 6 X 6. Some will have to only appear on the 18 x 18 sections.

I will also try to create my own pieces to fit on each section.

Looks very funny!
Are the pipes scaled to provide complete or partial cover?

I think I am missing something in the translation of "It looks very funny" Could you please clarify for me? Thanks

The pipes are either 3/8" or 5/8". Normal communication with your fellow player will clear up any issues with cover etc. The basic rule of thumb we use is more than half the model is behind something - it provides cover. (either hard or soft depending upon what you are behind).

The way I intended the board (in reference to cover) would be hard cover if at least half the model is behind one of the pipes etc. Very good question about cover with the pipes. Thanks for bringing it up.

No, but thanks for noticing them.

They are shut off valves for the industrial terrain I am making. I tried to have them stand out by painting them. I may tone it down some with another wash on them. I will do this when I finish the pieces - I would like to add laminated control panels where appropriate and chemical warnings/markings on all storage tanks.

I am continuing to cast with all 5 molds now. I am waiting on 2 more molds (to be purchased this week). I will need these to finish this project.

In the mean time I am working on a storage/transportation solution for the 18" x 18" terrain pieces. It looks like I will have to fabricate my own for them.

I also will most likely use the textured wallpaper for flooring on the 18" x 18" pieces. The ceiling tile is very difficult to cut to a correct size.

I used painter's tape and a fine tooth blade and I was able to cut them without issues (no cracking). Getting them trimmed to fit the wood pieces I want to mount them on is difficult.

2 new molds to be purchased after vacation. I had to wait on payment from a friend in Dover first.

I will most likely use a box or boxes for this now.

I tried this and it works well

I cut it with the blade without chips/shattering. The issue I ran into was trimming to fit the wood piece.

Major setback.

I had the initial pieces for the first 18x18 modular piece fully assembled and painted with weathering (see pictures above). They were (yes were) all tucked in nicely in a large flat tupperware case in the garage. During the garage sale and carpet install the case was moved to make room for all the furniture etc from the house. They were placed on the top of a recycle bin (approx 3 -3 1/2 feet) off the ground. I noticed a couple needed to be repaired during what I would call normal bumping etc. and I was planning to do so after the furniture was back in the house.  Hirst arts mold pieces do not react well to a 3- 3 1/2 foot drop onto the concrete floor BTW. Julie did apologize profusely but the damage was done. I had to trash all the pieces and will start over assembling them again from scratch. I may begin this process by the end of the month. I still would like to have the table completed and my army painted by Talamania.

I couldn't take pictures of the wreckage. It was too emotional for me.

I was using plaster. I have a good amount of pieces that I can use to redo what was broken. I am not too worried about it.
Title: Re: Industrial Modular Terrain Board
Post by: luckyone on October 20, 2010, 08:36:51 AM
Due to the set back and the lost time I decided to change how this board will be made. I can use all the casts I have made to date but the change will greatly reduce the amount of time needed to make the board.

Instead of having the "floor" of the table be made up of 3x6 or 6x6 pieces etc., I will use the textured wallpaper I purchased for the walls of each building. This will greatly reduce the number of cast I need to do i.e. time.

I will use an earlier concept for the board's Industrial terrain and use CD sized bases for smaller pieces of terrain. The CD will be covered with the same textured wallpaper to "blend" in with the 4x4 foam table floor. Larger pieces will require plastic board of different sizes (rectangular/square).

This would allow the terrain produced to be used on other boards as well.

I will have to start soon so I can work out any issues that might arise.

Yes thanks, the initial casting is completed. I have enough to make the first 16 X 16 piece now plus a good amount extra to build pieces I can swap in/out. I also bought a cool 4 gun anti aircraft emplacement I plan on using for the next 16 x 16 piece of terrain. It is progressing slowly (especially during the holidays). I also have a digital camera for hobby use only since Julie and I bought a new one for the family so I can post pictures easier. I have the first layout completed on excell and will have to start to build it from floor level up. I also have the flat piece of plastic board I will use as its base. I decided on the color scheme and bought the initial spray cans of primer for it.
