Title: "Mutant Terror Bird" available for pre-order
Post by: Alxbates on February 02, 2010, 05:57:26 AM
Hello folks,

I've had a few requests for my "Mutant Terror Bird" figure, but I'm still a ways away from being able to have it cast in metal.  Real life keeps getting in the way of my miniatures...

So, in order to get the figure in to production more quickly, I've decided to offer it for pre-order.

The figure should be of interest to Chronopia players, as the design is inspired by this Chronopia artwork by Adrian Smith, depicting Vulture Clan Dwarven Blood Totems:

I need about 25 pre-orders to pay for the casting in its entirety, but every order that I get will make it easier for me to have the figures cast in metal.

The pre-order price does NOT include shipping - shipping will depend on the weight of the finished figures.  I'll post shipping details when the figure returns from the caster, and send invoices to everyone who pre-orders once I've got the information.

If you'd like to pre-order one (or more!) of these Mutant Terror Birds, send me $14 (US Dollars) for each bird by Paypal to: Alxbates@yahoo.com.  Sorry, I'm only taking pre-orders by Paypal, it'll make it much easier for me to track the orders.

Also, please make sure that your Paypal information is accurate... it's surprising the number of people who can't be bothered to capitalize the name of their country or state, or who misspell the name of the very street they live on...

Hey Andy - I've received your payment, so it's come through on my end.  I keep those old email addresses active, they still work for sending me Paypal payments.

Thanks, guys!

WHOAAH!!!!!

Yes, and yes!!  I'll rock out tonight or tomorrow and paypal away!!  I hope you won't mind if I convert mine with some wings.  It's a distinct possibility, but then again the model may be too awesome to mess with.

Thanks to manic_miner Andy for making me see this thread.  I've been busy like crazy at work for months, and now I'm settling in and ready to get back to what's important: Chronopia and Warzone!!

This beast looks fabulous.  It's so uncanny that I was weeks (perhaps days) away from painting my own crappy proxy for this guy, and all of a sudden this option is available.  I am pumped!

I'm gonna take 3 of them and give one to my buddy that introduced me to the game.  I'll take care of the PayPal hopefully later today.

Thanks Alex, and good luck with your family issues.

The answer is simple Josh -- Buy two and convert one while leaving the other as Alex envisioned it.  ;)

Thanks Joshua!  It won't hurt my feelings at all if you convert it - I've already got plans to convert at least one for myself (gotta have two for the table - one for the Blood Totem and another for the Keeper to transform into!).  I'd love to see a conversion with wings, though.

Hey guys, someone PM'd me about the turnaround time, so I figured I'd post something here.

The turnaround time at the caster I use is about six weeks - that's six weeks from the time I put the greens in the mail to the day I get the finished castings in hand.  You've got to figure at least a few days for me to sort & pack the figures, then a few more for the figures to travel in the mail from me to you (more if you're not in the USA).

So, two months is a nice safe timeframe to figure on once I've got the funds to pay for the casting.  Maybe slightly less time than that, but two months is a number I'm comfortable quoting.

Right now the pre-orders are about halfway towards paying for the casting.  If I don't get any more pre-orders, I should still be able to send them off to the caster in maybe a month, so, they should be available for sale in May.  Early May-ish.

So... that's more information there.  Yep.  Definitely information.  Not sure how useful it'll be to ya'll, but it's information.

That's fine, bro.  The pre-orders have stalled out at about halfway towards covering the casting costs, so I'm slowly squirreling money away.  I'll still gladly accept any pre-orders that anyone wants to send me, though!  Every bit helps.

How about an update on the Terror bird Alex.

No worries here, just curious how your coming along.

Sad to say, no updates at all.  I've been dealing with family health issues - I've still got the pre-orders, but haven't been able to squirrel away the remaining funds.

I'm still planning on it, and I'll have the birds (as well as a general restock and a few other gubbins) by the end of the summer, but if the wait has been too long for anyone I'm happy to refund their pre-order.  OK, I'd be sad to do it, but I'm absolutely willing!   :D

Don't mean to pester, but any update on when they will be available?  Earlier in the year you had estimated "late summer".

Hello Daargrim,

That is a perfectly reasonable question - other than Facebook, I haven't been online very much this summer.  Sorry for the lack of communication - I just haven't had much to update.

I spoke with my caster last week, got the details worked out for the Terror Bird (and a few other items, including a restock of my sold-out stuff and the new stone age weapon sprues), and will be sending the greens to be cast next week.  Probably monday (maybe tuesday).  It will be a 4-5 week turnaround time on the castings, so I should be mailing all the pre-orders out before Halloween.

Which I know, makes it a "fall" release, rather than "late summer".

Thanks to everyone for their patience.

Good grief.  I just re-read the early part of this thread - and just saw how my first estimate of the time the bird would be released was "early May-ish".

I think I understand why so few miniature companies do pre-orders, that was far too optimistic a date (although at the time I said it I genuinely thought it was realistic.)

Again, my apologies for the long wait, thanks to everyone for their patience, and if anyone wants a refund I'm completely willing to give one.  At least by now Andy has some new appropriate dwarves to compliment this bird!

Great new's on the Terror Bird's release Alex.

We all have real life to deal with and know you are just starting out. This is a very hard game to get into.Nothing goes to plan either.

As for more Dwarves I hope to send some off for moulding next week. These will be Axe weilding howlers  ;D.Just waiting for some Goblins back from Kev Adams.

The new date will give us all time to get the rest of the Vulture clan miniatures painted for their arrival.

No problem on the wait...I understand.  Just was curious where you were at!

Thanks for the update!

The birds are here!

The castings have arrived, as well as a complete restock of all my other Forge of Ice stuff (and a few new things!).  I'll need a few days to unpack and sort everything, and I'm attending a convention this weekend, but I expect that all the pre-orders will be in the mail on Monday.

*IMPORTANT* - if you have moved or changed your address since you placed your pre-order, PLEASE send me your current/new address!  I realize that some time has passed since the initial pre-order and we all move around a bit.

The final price on the birds will be higher than the $14 that I offered it at pre-order for, I'm not exactly sure how much yet (I've gotta do some math!  MATH!).  Also, anyone who pre-ordered it will get it shipped for free as a "thank you for your patience" gesture.

Hey folks, all the Terror Bird pre-orders have shipped as of this afternoon.

Many thanks, especially to Robert, Pat, David, and Andy for their patience.  I think the long wait will be worth it, and I sent each of you a little something extra that won't see public release (it's a small thing, but I think it's kinda neat).

I suspect that you missed the update because you're so busy with your own new releases!  Good grief, man, slow down!  You're putting me to shame!  :)

As for proving it, well, OK, your wish is my command!

Received my order yesterday, and now that I see them I wish I had ordered more.  The initial pictures (the greens) don't do them justice.  I can think of many different uses for the Terror Birds in other game/hobby systems.

Nice job on the painting Alex and thanks for the work and inspiration in helping me/us filling a gap in our miniature collection(s).
