Looks good to me.  I like the red trim, it stands out nicely.

Brand X painting is the place he sent them to be painted. Thats not his paint job. His scheme but not his handy work. He sent them to Utah to be done for him.

Well then, I have to ask, how much was it to have that figure painted?

I mean, it is decent table top quality as best I can tell, but for a professionally painted miniature, that doesn't seem that impressive.

That's their "basic level": five bucks.  Basing will be included but isn't done yet.  I could have spent more in 1/2 increments upwards for different levels.  Go see their gallery at www.brandxpainting.com and see if you like their work.

I'm finding them very pleasant and professional to deal with, and I'm keeping this as a log of the experience, in case anyone decides to use a painting service.  'Never thought I would, but now instead of spending all my coin on even more models, I can spend it on getting some armies painted, spend the time painting on armies I should have done, learn new techniques on individual character models that are slowly getting applied to my other armies, and clean up the house!!

My goal is to have any Chronopia army available to play at my spot.  Whatever list you come up with, I want to pretty much be able to have it.

Ok, that standard looks a lot better.  And for $5 that seems to be a pretty good deal.

The grunts at the basic level are better than almost everything I've done.  I'm working on finishing my Dwarves, as they are my favorites, and I may spend a few more bucks on the individuals to bring up the quality.  I've no wife and kids to worry about, and I'd rather pay for painting than new metal!!  Models are skyrocketing; I've taken to picking up stuff almost exclusively from ebay and closeout sales, and always try to get free shipping on anything newer.

I've been doing the same Josh - found a great painter to knock out a load of my grunt troops and saving characters for myself.  I just don 't have time to paint ALL the stuff I have AND have a life.  :D

Hello all! My name is Thomas and I'm the one painting Joshua's Firstborn. He said I should go ahead and post the WIP pictures we have so far here. You will be able to see them below. I want to thank everyone for their kind words thus far.

The models should be completely finished by the end of this week so you will get to see finished pictures as well.

As Joshua mentioned, these are at our Basic Level which is right around tabletop quality. If you're curious about getting something done, feel free to let me know. Turnaround time is fairly quick. With an army this size (around 100 figs), it's usually about 2 weeks. That allows us to inventory the models, assign a painter, paint it, photograph it and send it to you. We can do assembly as well.

Thanks!

Thomas

Trust me, Chronopia is still the coolest game and setting.  Check our Talamania threads to see our next international event we have planned in May.

Welcome aboard.  We have an active trading community, so it's still possible to find models and build an army.  Anything you need, ask and someone 'round here will go out of their way to help.

Post script:  I will bring them to Talamania for anyone who wants to run a Firstborn army list.  If you don't want to pack everything, let me know ahead of time.

You do Sci-Fi stuff as well? I'm sure some of the Warzone guys would like to know.
Title: Re: Brand X painting: Firstborn

Dang, those Firstborn are looking pretty nice for the price you are charging.  That first picture was a bit deceitful as it didn't look nearly as good as the others do.

I dunno though, I like fielding an army I did myself.  Not too mention, I'd never be able to afford any painting service.

@ Topkick - Indeed we do Sci-Fi as well! We will paint pretty much anything out there! If you are interested, PM me or email me at admin@brandxpainting.com and we can get a quote worked out for you. You can visit http://www.brandxpainting.com/projects_gallery (http://www.brandxpainting.com/projects_gallery) to look at what we've done lately. We don't have any Warzone up at the moment, unfortunately.

@ Glenn M - Thanks for the kind words! While being able to play with an army you painted yourself is a great thing, a lot of people don't care for painting but love to play OR they just don't have time to paint. If you figure in it takes most people on average around 60 or so hours to paint an army, that's a lot of time that could be used to play or do other things.

I should have more pictures posted either tonight or tomorrow sometime. Iron Guard and Swordsmen... possibly the crossbowmen and archers as well.

We are starting to really like the models and I'd be interested in acquiring some. Personally, I like how a lot of the Stygian army looks. If anyone has a Desert Crawler, I'd love to see about either a trade or just buying it outright from you! Or, if you would just like to have it painted, I would LOVE to paint it for you. It just reminds me of the Sand Worms from Dune too much!

Here are some of the pictures I promised!

These have not been matte coated yet and may need touchups, but it's a WIP so be nice :)

Lookin' good so far.  Thanks Thomas for posting here so we can all admire your handiwork.

Question: From the bases on some of'em, I'm guessing you use a silver primer like Tamiya, or Krylon?  Give us a hint please, as it's something we can all learn from.

This is a hell of lot more fun sharing the photos and letting people give feedback.  I'm looking forward to people being able to just come over and play without having to lug their models around.

Here are a couple pictures of the Iron Guard models. As for the base paint color. Most everything has been primed in a Charcoal Auto Primer. It's Rustoleum Automobile Primer and the color is Dark Grey, but they come out almost black. After that, the models are sprayed with a light coat of Silver Aluminum. Since most of the models are in armor, this makes the job a bit easier in the long run. Most of the time we prefer to prime in white, light grey or the charcoal color, but it always depends on how the model is going to be painted. The gold trim is Vallejo Glorious Gold. The red is P3 Skorne Red and the purple is Vallejo Royal Purple. After all the models have been finished, there will be some touch ups and what not to clean up the colors. The gems will be picked out in a gloss varnish after the final matte coat. Basing is going to be browns with a green static grass and chocolate brown rim. Only about 40 more models left to paint and it will all be finished. Our goal is to have them finished by the end of the week so I will be sure to keep you all posted on the outcome. In the meantime, I hope you're all enjoying the WIP shots. Normally we don't do this, but I think it kind of helps someone understand the process that we go through.

Those Iron Guard look really good.

Are you going to hand make banners for the standard as well?

It will have a banner of some sort by the time everything is finished

The design will totally be up to him (HINT HINT Joshua), but I'll make sure it happens on the model. Unless, that is, he doesn't want me to put a banner on it????

Updated pictures of the Black Sisters. They've been changed to our Standard Level. Basically, the skin, boots and reds were highlighted to help bring out some more detail on the mini. The metallic colors will also be getting some higlighting as well, but I thought I would share the process...

As I said before, I should have the Crossbowmen and Longbowmen up tonight sometime.

Sorry for being late with uploading the crossbowmen. I ended up heading off to bed early last night and tonight I went out with my wife and a couple friends to eat some sushi and have some sake. It was good, I must say! My wife finally tried it too and she seemed to enjoy it a bit.

Everything should be finished by tomorrow evening including the basing and final touch ups. We ended up making a couple banners out of green stuff for the Iron Guard Standard so you will get to see that as well. I hope you like everything so far!

Very nice painting.I like how you have done them and think Joshua is going to be very happy with them.Looking forward to seeing them all finished and together in for an army shot.
I would have liked to have sent some miniatures for painting but I think it would workout expensive from the UK.
Title: Re: Brand X painting: Firstborn
Post by: pekulior on March 30, 2008, 12:43:49 AM
Actually, it isn't as bad as you think if you're thinking about the shipping costs being high. We can ship to the UK for $20-$25 for a whole army. Anything over that and we'll eat the extra cost. If you're only having 1 or 2 miniatures painted I might be able to see the cost of shipping outweighing the cost of the painting, but you never know! :) If you're interested in having an army done, feel free to PM me or send email to admin@brandxpainting.com and maybe we can work something out!

They are going to be at Talamania regardless of who plays them.  I'm perfectly willing to share; they'll look great at our event.  The Black Sisters look good.  That was the right choice for the upgrade.  As for the banner, I've seen a few great looking ones that people have done, so I'll think of something.

I'm sure I'll love playing this army, as it looks so good.  I'm proud to say I've painted my Dwarf armies, but now I'm looking at models differently after seeing these!!

It's my new thing.  I'm curtailing buying tons of models unless I get them cheap on ebay, or by grabbing whole racks of models at %80 off!  Now the bulk of my hobby addiction will go to getting some of these painted.  My own workbench has armies on it and some other stuff I find time to paint.

I highly recommend it, and Brand X.
