Title: Unreleased rules--
Post by: warzoneD on January 21, 2008, 01:37:17 PM
There were rumors last year that the missing world books and a vehicle rules book might be available in PDF form this year.

Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, where and when it might happen?

Cheers and happy MLK Day!

Yes it's true, but there is no confirmed date/time of release. Thom is very busy in the 1st quarter of the year so I wouldn't exspect anything before April/May.

I hope there are not trying to overpower the new units.

I know this from many games and from the 1st edition.

New units are often more powerful as the old ones,
and therefore the old units vanishes in the forces.

For Capitol I would like to see some units for close quarter fight,
esp. Grunt Troopers.

AFA world books, I think they're focused on campaigns and battle environments - but frankly IMO, any new material would be thrilling to at least read.

The Missing world book could be the Mercury book they were working on as a follow up to the Mars & Venus ones they released I hope so as it was said to have rules for new Mishima units and cave fighting. And even better if it was the Dark Eden book revamped.  ;D

The Mars and Venus books were for 2nd edition not UWZ. We'll have to what and see what was planned to be added. ;D

True but I bet they were written for 2nd edition before target went under and excelsior inherited the drafts hopefully these  were updated to he new version as the covers seem to say ultimate edition on them.

Lets hope they do come out the original Mars and Venus books were good and I'd like to see the Dark eden universe and troops fleshed out a bit more.

@ WarzoneD - It is my understanding that these are written and are the ones that are promised to be released in 2008. Thom Talamini is among other things a corporate CPA type who will not have a minute to himself until 16 April at the earliest. After that expect them to be proofed and released as PDF's over the summer/fall months.

@ Semai99 - The Venus and Mars books were faction specific. I believe these will cover all the factions based on the respective planets.

COOL sign me up for a copy when it gets released as I have a copy of everything else from 1st edition onwards

Great I like this idea so there will be some new planetary units probably like imperial raiders.

I wonder if it will include any types of vehicles such as APC's or trucks?

Can't wait for more stuff just reread my copy's of the novels great fluff.

From Thom in the thread regarding the Heresy order:

"Jason (et. al).

Nearly all their models will be statted up for use in the games.  I will try and sit down tonight and post up the unit sizes so you can at least know who is an individual and/ or what size a warband may be.  Some of the stats will be posted on these boards in advance of the new site.

Cheers!"

I think the "new site" is indicative of forward progress.  Keep in mind that Thom is now having to move house because the owners of the place he is renting decided to sell and give him the opportunity to buy or move elsewhere.  He's been busy house hunting and let's just say writing code.....

That's all I can say about that.

As for units for the game engine, you'll be seeing those on these forums too.  Right now we're working on mostly Fantasy stats for the Heresy line, but sci-fi will be appearing too.  See the "New Evil Models Coming" thread in the Chronopia section.  Also check out the "Time to Rally" thread in the announcements.

Thom will make an official announcement answering your question regarding the unreleased sourcebooks, and whatever else he's cooking up.

Stay tuned and enjoy your gaming.

I would like to address this concern, Enker.

I feel the same as you do, on this.  I know that one of the main things about the rubric is that all models are balanced against it, then playtested.  There is no plan of which I am aware to make old models obsolete.  In fact, this would go against the very purpose of any new rules, as new models are a long way off.

I do appreciate the concern, as I have witnessed many games do this, in the past.  I know from discussions with Thom that he is dead set against the power spiral that comes from throwing the rubric out the window in favor of selling new models.

I hope this helps.

It's also the main reason Thom is not inclined to release a build your own troops game, because balance is usually lost with people trying to min/max what they can rather than build a balanced game.

If you like what Thom has done with his engine for Warzone and for Chronopia, then you should expect more of the same balance from his new endeavor.

Wow, haven't been back here in a while.  I'm ecstatic that the new rules may be released soon.  My buddy and I are having a game of UWZ next week now that I finally completed my Romanov force with the Viktors I had been wanting since Excelsior was still in business.

Here's hoping we see the return of Bauhaus Orders so I can use all those spare Wolfheads I have as the Order of the Wolf. :D

I personally don't mind not getting a unit creator for the reasons stated above, even the best system can be abused by min-maxing by those so inclined so it takes a fairly unbiased creator not to let that work its way in.  I love the way all the units in the main book are handled and I expect nothing less from those that are coming in the future.

By the way which supplements are getting done?  There were three or so planned if I remember correctly before they lost the liscence are we getting all three or just the one that was closest to completion at the time.  Either way I'm psyched by the possibility of new material for Warzone.

Well I can tell you he's busy writing code, and working on this stuff.  I nag him constantly, but sometimes I'd like to beat him over the head with a club!!

I'm glad he is doing something as he could have walked away from the games and told the world to fug off.   A lot of people have made the effort to keep the games alive, run events, and give him moral support, so if you're here, you're one of'em.

Work is progressing, nicely.  Assignments and deadlines have been issued, and writing has commenced.  There is not much more to report, yet.

Santa's elf-like sweatshop flunkies seemed to have overlooked us, this year.   However, I am anticipating some news before winter is out.

Indeed.  Santa's elves seemed to have misplaced his bag of Warzone goodies.  If he has not found them by this weekend, I will be going by to help him out finding them.

I thought the problem was related to the antics of a certain Christmas Karnophage and an errant grenade thrown into the works...

Dang those Karnophages!

I too await patiently, and hope Thom is doing well and making steady progress.

Now, time to hit the paint table, and get some more troops finished up.

All I can tell you is that there is forward progress in everything he said in his "There and Back Again" post.   He finished the sculpting for Bob Mervine he was doing, and I'm glad I got those two connected.

I can't give you any details, but I would think this year's Talamania will be especially off the hook.   ;)

have these books ever been released, or did the project die on the table?  I'm new to warzone (closed system now that there's no new production, hence my pewter addiction can be sated for a while without threats of ooh!  Shiny!  IF these are out I want to get copies before they are lost to the mists of time.  Thanks!
