It seems we have been getting a bunch of spammers recently. As soon as I see them I delete the threads. If you see a thread click on the the report to Moderator thread and an e-mail will be sent to Wedge and me and whoever sees it first will nuke the thread.

We've had a couple of more spammers posting here the last couple of days. If you see a post that you think is a spammer or something else you think needs the attention of a mod use the Report to Moderator link on the bottom right of the post.

It seems the report to mod button doesn't work at the moment, at least not for me since I haven't gotten any e-mails lately.
Wedge, do you get them?
I've increased my surveillance and have nuked a bunch of spam threads lately. But if you see one send me a PM.
Most important though is not to click on any links in the messages.

I've reported several and then after reporting them they go away and come back. Not sure what is going on but I'll keep hitting the Mod Signal :D

I have deleted a ton of them lately. Maybe I am just beating you to some of them Coil. I get emails at my home email address whenever someone hits the report to moderator button so I know it is working.

Also, as a notice to those who report the spam. Thank you for being vigilant and detecting these right away.
However, I would ask that once it is reported please refrain from replying to the post. As a moderator I have to go in and delete each post one at a time... there isn't a KILL button that gets rid of it all.

Disregard! I am a moron! Coil pointed this out... darn Swedes are always right. There is a "remove topic" button for moderators that I did not see at the bottom. I've been making this way to hard on myself.
In otherwords... relpy as much as you want to the spammers--I'm only going to remove it with a single click of a button now! :)

Is there a way to make the 1st few posts by someone on this board "moderated", ie, they can post, but it doesnt actually hit the board until a moderator or other admin checks it 1st? There seems to have been a serious influx of spammers of late....

It's probably possible but we need Thom, Lance or Jon to set it up for us (or they need to give Wedge or me the access to do it).

than would slow things down, as no one could post new toppics directly.
I think to delete 2-3 spams per week is the lesser evil..

Great work reporting spam!
Wedge and I have been zapping spam like crazy. I've also increased my surveillance and check in regularly during the day and zap a lot of them before you see them.
Next week I'll be away on vacation and my internet access will probably be quite limited. Wedge will still be around though but removal may take a bit longer since there's just him.

PS I know most of you know not to. But I repeat never ever click on the links in spam it may 1. Mess up your computer 2. Attract even more spammers here.

the spam is really an issue, and there seems to be quite a lot......
most of bots can be identified through their names, however..
-> we need more people able to kick users. who could grand this rights to users, and what do you think of assigning spam-killers?
I, for my part, would gladely kick a bot instead of just reporting the spam..
what do you think, what can be done?
(the "posting after control" solution seems bad to me because it would slow things down extremly, and problably puts more work to the "gatekeeper")

Thats a great idea. I for one wouldnt mind doing that. Im on all the time even tho I dont post. I would get a perverse sense of pleasure in killing something legally ;D

Top help keep bots out, Is there any way to put some type of word verifaction on the new user registration form?

I'm away over the weekend and might only be able to check in once or twice so spam removal may be a bit slower than normal.

Is there a way to set it up so that you have to at least fill in some of your profile before you can post? Or at least have one of thos hidden number verification systems installed. The spam has gone way past super ridiculous

Unfortunately, I do not have such abilities. I can zap, but not pre-audit. I am not sure where all that power rests. Does Thom have the keys to vault on this?

You would be alarmed at the number of people who are members of our website with zero posts. We really need to get more power (Coil and I) to remove members and/or find ways to limit the posts of these spammers. Where is Thom! He promised more power!

Thom is still having problems logging on, so the power will have to come from Lance who hopefully is an administrator. I hope it happens soon the spammers are realy starting to bother the #%^ out of me.

Not certain what this means but I just noticed that we have 114 "guests" on-line at this moment. It jumped up from 96 just a minute ago. Is somebody trying to over load the server???

26 June 21:55 hrs CST -- 45 guests and rising. Where is this sudden influx coming from? If they were all spammers we would be buried in the stuff but our spam total hasn't risen by near the level of visitors.

Well it could be because of news of the movie. I just did a google and a comcast search for excelsior entertainment. On the first page of both you find a link to these forums. So if you really wanted to find out about the movie and got to WIKI then you could end up here.

the other 2 forum sites I belong too have never had a problem with spammers, I wonder why you guys have a problem, but they don't.

It depends on the level of security the server provides. Some host providers offer very little in the way of spam protection I am also on other forum and the spam problem is very much under control on them.

We're nuking them as fast as we can. We need more power though. There are probably a number of settings we could change if us mods got admin access.
Sadly it seems no matter how much we ask we do not get it.
The spam with pics makes me not want to go in and remove stuff when I'm at the office.
