Spartacus: Blood and Sand
« on: March 03, 2010, 08:12:20 PM »
Anyone watching this???  Thom told me about it and now I'm hooked.  It's on Starz network, apparently on cable, but I watch it on the 'ol computer.
1.  Totally "300" with the stylized fight scenes.
2.  It's like "Rome" with fewer characters.
3.  Lucy Lawless naked.

'Nuff said!!!

Tom said he watched it and it is great. I do not get Starz here. What website do you watch it on?

I caught the premiere on Encore as a promo.  Lots of profanity, violence and nudity.  Quite good!  You're dead right about the 300-style action sequences.  I wish I could see more, but I'm too cheap to dole out the money for Starz.

I agree it's good and like 300, but ROME was far better.  ;)

No argument there Phil.  Rome was the bomb, but Spartacus is getting good.  I have a friend who gets them off the computer on disc for me, so I guess y'all can go that route.  No cable for me!!

You can go to Starz.com and watch the first two episodes for free.   :) :)

I must be the odd man out here, cause i think that is awful.  I couldn't even finish one episode.  I don't like the cross of stylization and historical accuracy.  Either do one or the other.

300 was great because it was completely stylized and way over the top.  Rome was phenomenal because it portrayed the period so accurately in every single detail that you felt like you were watching ancient Rome, well outside of the main characters being fictional. Oh and by the way THIRTEEEENTH!!!!!

I do enjoy it.

I will add this caveat however, that at first I wasn't a fan.  The problem I feel was mine.  I think I went into episode one expecting a more historical representation of the character (like Rome/ Kirk Douglas) and what I got was a very fictionalized story with a highly stylized cinematography (ala 300).  I was taken very much aback.

I think I came around once I was able to switch gears in my own head and see it as simply a serial set in the Roman times with 300 style filming.  Now, with no expectations other than to be entertained I am quite enjoying it.  What has been a pleasant surprise for me (based on my initial reactions) was the clever plot twists and machinations that occur and surprise me occasionally.  The fight scenes are nice and there is a certain visceral appeal there.  Nudity sure, but I have not found it over the top yet.  To be fair, there was a certain ramp up time for the story and plot to get moving but by episode 3 I was a fan.

Glad some others are trying it.
