Best specialists?
« on: January 22, 2010, 06:48:34 PM »
Since I'm getting all jazzed about Talamania and Warzone in general, I just wanted to know which specialists/weapons in your opinion are best or have given you the most devastating results.
I wasn't looking for a particular unit specialist (ex Sea Lion sniper), but more like snipers in general, or LMGs, or HMGs, rocket launcher, flame thrower, etc. Having not yet played since my return to the game, I'm trying to learn more about the specialists as I work my way through the UWZ book. Some weapons look good on paper but might not perform as good on tabletop, and vice versa.

Not really sure what you are asking.  As a standard when choosing a squad for a list the best and most common specialist to get is the HMG.

It is hard for me to judge though since I play DL Algeroth/Cult  and in all honesty DL doesn't exactly have a plethora of choices when it comes to specialists.  I mean if it isn't a flame thrower, HMG, or some wierd symmetry gun we probably don't get one.

The RL w/ AP rounds, HMG, FT all are good when  taking out multible models. For the most part it's whatever you personally like.

i *dislike* the FT the most, which i guess is saying i think its the best. not in an all around sense by any means but it is imho TOO powerful when used right. (i.e. vs assault troops, defensively, etc.)

Yeah, that's what I was asking. I'm just trying to get a feel for which weapons/specialists are good, and which aren't generally considered very good.
Thanks for the info and suggestions so far everyone!

The best way to determine what the best selection for a specialist in a squad is fairly easy.  You must ask yourself the following questions...

1 : What is the squad's role in the army list?
  - if meant to be ranged support, then the sniper, Comms or RL trooper is best.
  - If meant to be a flanking unit, then grenade launchers are best.
  - If meant to go in teh teeth of the enemy, then the HMG and the flamer are best.

In the case of the Capitol forces, I tend to lean towards the following in my squads..

LI: As flanking harrassment troops, GL.  As Run and Gun, LMG.
HI: i usually take them as a Fire Support element to my LI, so its usually sniper and missile trooper.  If I make a HI unit my into the breech squad, then its HMG and several riflemen.

Capitol specialist to be picked depend on what you want, and what you can get.
Rangers are going up front via infiltrate, so a LMG is a good choice, but since you can place them in a good position, the sniper is also good (as long as you keep him in range of your squad).
HInf are good for whatever you want (depends on what you want to use them for), and you can't go wrong with a mix of HMG and RL. But it's also a plus that the HInf sniper has form fireteam, so you can place him and leave him behind.
Sunset Strikers should have a FT. They are going to get close up, so the close support of a FT works well for them.

All great ideas above.

For pure firepower in tight spots I enjoy employing Assault Marines w/ HMG and the  Assault Marine Captain. Both have the M-89 HMG with 3(x3) at PB. Not to mention being able to shoot into close combat and behind you with no worries.

FT and LMG's are nice, but I prefer the heavier M-89 for those "close encounters"

Just imagine Jesse Ventura with his gatling gun in Predator in an armoured suit - on crack.

Always look out for number one, but don't step in number two.

That actually sounds pretty potent (assault Marine w/ HMG). Thanks for the advice so far everyone.
