Devout army flavors
« on: January 01, 2010, 09:38:17 AM »
I was wondering if the Devout armies have differences due to the various prophets running them.
Just like the Elves have different armies with the same core troops, do the Devout also have differences?
Does one prophet favor undead, another have large masses of Swordsmen and Great Swordsmen, and yet another use almost all demons?
I know that there is nothing in the army make up to indicate this, but I was wondering if there was some fluff or flavor piece that would make the Devout armies thematically different depending on what prophet sent them?

At the very least, what are the board's opinions on flavors for the Devout armies?

Each dark Prophet has a flavor, and Thom wanted to break them down into factions, and may still do so.  I'll reread the flavor and see what we can come up with just from the book.

The text does talk about certain preferences held by the prophets, but only in small ways. After reading the Devout part of the 2nd Ed Book....

Nemeth is written to gather his armies and summon creatures from the Dusk Realm.

Negral is written to have a Black Fleet, and was the first to have Necromancers.

Aleha is written to frequently raise the dead.

Lokoth is written to utilise firey Demons and dark Minions.

So if there was a split, it could easily start with the Necro\Warp Lord split.

I like the idea of splitting the Devout into 4 parts,

perhaps

Nemeth would be. Elite Infernal - Weak Followers - Jackal Clan (Dwarves)
Negral would be. Elite Undead - Weak Followers - Moderate Infernal
Aleha would be. Elite Undead - Weak Followers - Topaz Scorpians (Elves)
Lokoth would be. Elite Infernal - Moderate Followers - Weak Undead

I think of all the races in Chronopia, the Devout are in most need of an updated design.

I agree.  While the Devout have some of the most awesome monster models ever made for any game, EVER (Abyss Crawler & Soulflayer, I'm talkin' 'bout you!), it also has some of the clunkiest and most primitive sculpts in the whole range (Devout Swordsmen, I'm talkin' 'bout you!).

Also, while I love that the undead are varied from all the other races in the game, it's a bummer that there's only one pose from each race - a second pose would really add a lot of variety to my big ass units of skeletons.

Yeah, I love the Soul Flayer the Abyss Crawler, and the Risen being raicialised.

I think one of the problems I have with the Devout is that alot of their designs do not translate so well from the art to the miniature.
when I saw the Nameless art, I decided I would use Devout, but when I saw the model, I was not so sure. While I think the Nameless looks great when painted nicely, it was this dissappointment which made me pick up Stygian instead.

Stygian seem to seemlessly flow between art and model. The Guardian, Priestess, Sisiters of Tiamat all look good in the art and as miniatures. While the angular axe spikes and angular shoulder spikes look great on the Stalker in the art, they dont look so good on the model.

I would love to see the Devout get an updated look, starting with Dark Eyes, same Head and swords but with new armor with smaller shoulder armor.
The Dammed (mainly the head), Harbringer, Dusk Realm Demon all need a new look.
The swordmen seriously need a new Helmets, and I think the Warped Lord needs a new face.

I think getting the badguys right is very important, I do not think the Devout need a complete makeover, just a Soul Flayer/Abyss Crawler facelift.
