Abington Games closing.
« on: August 18, 2009, 09:09:31 AM »
From the weekly news from the store:

Dear Friends:

This is a difficult weekly email to send.  Abington Games is going out of business.  This makes us the third local game store to close this year (Round Table Games in Conshohocken and Dimension Collectibles in Ambler).  Between the forces of online sales, our attempts to run this part-time, and the current state of the economy, we can't continue the business.

However, there are some benefits to you - we need to liquidate inventory, so there is a 30% off sale on almost everything in the store!  We have loads of miniatures and board games and want to give you the chance to pick them up.

We will continue to be open for a while now - I expect through September.  We will continue to offer gaming space for you to play your games and have some fun.

We entered this for the love of gaming, but we are not business people and did not give it the full time attention that it needs.  I am saddened by the closing, but thankful of the new friends I made and the bonds that were stengthened through gaming.

IF anyone seriously wants to buy the store from us and can give it the care and attention it deserves, please contact one of us - we'd be happy to talk about it.

Josh,

Have you thought about just making an e-store?  Even on eBay, with their ridiculous fees and nonsuch, you could have a successful store front.

That's in the works, and devilishly slow.  I thought May in my hubris, but photographing models for an online shop is not as easy as one would think.  Hopefully soon.

I don't know from your post if you thought I worked at or owned Abington; I'm just a customer posting a copy of their store email I received.

Yeah, I got that impression from your post (owner/worker).  Sorry, I misread the specifics...I just thought you were an owner having to close shop.

No worries.  It's just sad that game and hobby stores are going the way of the Dodo.

All of my local games stores are closed also. I talked to the owner from the one in Milford and we now game at Superior Comics in Dover. They have a very limited space and gaming line.

the closest one to me was in the coventry mall over in Pottstown.  They closed over a year ago.  Next closest ones are 6 Feet Under in New Holland (45 Minutes) Cosmic Encounter (about the same), Comic Store West near York (hour) and Adventurer's Guild in Harrisburg (65 minutes).  Of them, AG is the best for sci-fi gaming.  6ft Under is good for historicals.

I would like to try and make it up there either Friday night or Saturday morning.

I remember when they opened, though at the time they were started by two friends of mine who have since sold it, and it was a fun and much needed fixture in that area.  I believe only GW has anything nearby now (which is great if you play GW but not so much if you wanted to browse other things).

They have an extensive wall of board games which wraps around the store, a small miniatures and roleplaying section, and of course cards.  I have been there only once in its newest incarnation (thanks largely to two friends of mine in that area) but I liked the atmosphere and the staff (who were kind enough to help me find the store when the GPS decided the Abington was a black whole of unmappable terrain).

If you can make the pilgrimage you may find some gems, get a good deal and help out some deserving gamers go out on a positive note.  That's a great thing.

To the Professor and staff- thanks for many great years of service.  It was appreciated and will be missed.

We here in KC are lucky to have a very strong gaming population.  There are three solid stores in the KC area (perhaps more in North KC, but I never go there).  They are all very active with tourneys, open game nights and other stuff that make them successful.  Flames of War seems to be really popular, even though I think it looks ridiculous when opposing players are using basically the same armies.

Must be a Geo thing, our FLGS's are doing fine, but they are spread way out.  I also make it an effort to spend money monthly and order through here whenever I can.
