Painting advice
« on: July 21, 2009, 02:40:29 PM »
So, I have this cool mini (or not) that looks just like some cybernetically enhanced dude holding twin belt-fed light machine guns.  He's got this really cool armor with big, bulky shoulder pads.  I really want him to look as cool when painted.  I am seeking color choice advice.

I'll just sit back and let you all discuss.  I might even pick someone's choice and splatter some paint on the model.
If sing, sang, and sung, sink, sank, and sunk, and drink, drank, and drunk, how is it that it isn't bring, brang, and brung, think, thank and thunk, and ding, dang, and dung?

Don't even get me started about bad, badder and baddest.  Run, ran AND run...again?  C'mon!

No advice or propositions from me.

After seeing your Hussars and Dragoons, you´re waaaaaaayy better than me with mini´s and colour.
Never try to teach the master ;-)

P.S.: BigBob style....Black boots, Camoshorts in grey-blue, bare chest, a vest in black leather with silver pins, Shoulder pads camo as shorts with some cool added insignia (Lions head, Cobra....), bare arms with tattoos and blinky shiny guns. and definitily sunglasses!

Perhaps I should've been less generic - this model is completely encased in armor.  I thought that the "cybernetically enhanced" was a dead giveaway.  Further, doesn't Big Bob have twin shoulder-mounted autocannon?

Proceed...

I would love to throw out a few color schemes, but just a few things...

What color preference ( "warm or cool") do you have and is this model going to be part of one of your existing armies?

Do you have a pic of the miniature or a link to it so we can get a look & feel for it?

Forgoing all that, what colors do you not want to use on the mini?

Going by the description you have given us, I'd say a scheme like the Cobra Crimson Guard from G.I.Joe would be interesting.  I know it may not be your thing, but I'm "shooting from the hip" so far.

To those unclear on the subject - He wants to paint his fig and is taking a survey on the color scheme it should be.  ;D  ;)

...or are you talking Surveilor?

Cybertronic - always a cool color palette.  Personally, I use royal blue, steel grey, neon green (for badges).  Leather always black, buckles and snap closures always bright silver.

Capitol.  O.D. all the way, baby!   Darker green OD pants - possibly camo patterned, with lighter green olive t-shirt.  Leather is always brown.  Steel grey weapons, with OD fittings.  Brass/Gold badges and buckles.

Just my .02 !

Dave, I think you and I have the same mini on the painting table. :)

I'm using Armour Grey (Target Games colour) which is a light bluish grey for the shoulder pads and armour.

ceramic armor is cooler than metallic, so a light pastel type of gray imo. ammo belts should have bright gold or brass bullets, maybe with red tips if visible. eyes yellow, if mechanical.

What army or game do you want to use it in?  What kind of environment?  Is it a figure that is a leader and needs to stick out or a troopie that blends in with the masses?  Are you inspired by something like Halo or Clone Wars to draw from?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm....

If we go with the scheme I chose for my own cyber-style troops....

I used GW's Shadow Grey for cloth and most main armor areas.
I used Target Nepharite Red or a GW Red for the shoulder pad/armor areas.

On my pure machine troops.... (Machinators) I went with a basic black undercoat and Ghoul Grey on all armored surfaces.  The Atilla's I went with either a Dark Blue Armor or an old Armory paint who's name escapes me right now. (Black Pearl I think)... but Ralpartha Steel over black basecoat works too.

For the Fig as described.... I would go with the Shadow Grey/Neph Red combo.  Details as they make sense.....
