Change of Nick
« on: March 10, 2009, 09:21:59 PM »
Hi everyone,

i hereby announce that i shall no longer be known as NoTrollNick but rather as

>>  Dr. Nick  <<                (taddaaa)

as since now (10.3.) i am done with my thesis&defense and i am, in fact, a doctor (rer. nat.).

Finally i am done with this RL project and will have some time to catch up with the WZL projects!
Thanks for everyone who wished me luck on my studies, it turned out quite nice!

Looking forward for some gaming/paintin/building,

cuīs

Dr. Nick   ;D ;D ;D

Me right after the OK-decison. in the background 3 of my profs testing me.

My "Doktors Hat", a tradition where the other doctorades build a themic hat.

Mine shows a cryostate to prepare brain slides (once i cut me bad, hence the bloody finger), a cammera (i am an avid photographer), some mice, and the hat itself depicting a O-labyrinth, and some lab-stuff

a real O-labyrinth

My main supporting Doc, who helped me a lot!

p.s.

hereīs the english

Summary and Outlook

The known emotionality-related phenotypes (altered anxiety-related behavior) of Penk1- and Tac1-deficient mice were confirmed in diverse animal models of behavior. Further, the stress induced neuronal activity (c-Fos-expression) in seven brain regions of the limbic system was determined. For this purpose a software and microscope based analysis station was established.
Both genetic models were compared to pharmacological models for altered emotionality regarding the anxiety-related behavior and the c-Fos-expression. Similar anxiety-related behavior but distinct c-Fos-expression were observed among Penk1-/- and amphetamin-treated WT-mice (increased emotionality) as well as among Tac1-/- and chlordiazepoxid-treated WT-mice (diminished emotionality). The c-Fos-expression of Penk1-/- mice was increased or reduced depending on the brain region and unchanged for Tac1-/- mice. In contrast, amphetamin caused strong c-Fos-expression in most of the examined brain regions while chlordiazepoxid caused a general reduction.
Parallel experiments in two different environments demonstrated that the anxiety-related behavior of mice with a genetic or pharmacological increased or diminished emotionality was similar within one environment, but differed between the environments. The extent of the c-Fos-expression varied greatly between both environments, but was similar influenced by the Penk1-Deletion in both.
In conclusion, enkephalines take part in stress-processing and formation of the stress-response, especially during conflicts of approach and avoidance. The strength of the general c-Fos-expression does not correlate to the level of emotionality. The environment critically influences models of behavior while quantitative c-Fos mappings are less affected.
The insights about the functions of the genes Penk1 and Tac1, the neuronal mechanisms of stress-processing and -response and the modes of action of emotion-altering agents could be beneficial to the development of medicaments for disordered stress-processing. For further experiments a characterisation of the c Fos-positive cells seems purposive.

Congratulations.  Will you be working as a neurologist, or is your doctoring going to involve psychiatry?  Past experience makes me feel like one of those mice.....

Ahh, but when it comes to science, aren't most terms couched in Latin?  For that matter, wouldn't most of the things you were describing be universally spelled?

Regardless, ya did well!  Congratulations, Dr. Nick!  Are you wanting to pursue a career as a geneticist, pharmaceutical scientist, or something else I'll have trouble spelling?

Congratulations! :D :D :D :D

Way to follow through and "stay the course".  I know it wasn't easy having to sacrifice a lot of your free time in order to study and prepare for examinations/tests.  I applaud you for your efforts and accomplishment.  I also would like to wish you well throughout your career as a doctor.

thanks for everyone!  :D

just now i take some days off and then lets see!

Ahh, but when it comes to science, aren't most terms couched in Latin?  For that matter, wouldn't most of the things you were describing be universally spelled?
actually itīs mostly english. of course for anatomical regions often latin or latin based names (Baso-Lateral Amygdala, Central Nucleus)

i ment the grammer..
that is quite hard for me.. i speak fluently, but of course  ::) not really welll

(is it: "...and microscope based analysis station was established."
or "...and microscope based analysis station has been established."??)

for example..

Quote
Are you wanting to pursue a career as a geneticist, pharmaceutical scientist, or something else I'll have trouble spelling?
well, i could stay as a post-doc (phd) but i would rather not.

many work which might as well not turn out good (experimental results),
hard competition (no post doc >40 ;),
bad pay,
long work-time,
perhaps lotīs of travel/moving every 2-3 years

i could sell stuff (microscopes, lab stuff/maschines)
become a teacher (some more study....)
work in the government (ecologic control, ministery paper-pusher)

or something completely diffenrent
honestly i donīt know yet..

but my main concern is where to travel now  ???
caribean-south america-asia??

and if caribean cuba or dominican republic?
(well, cuba of course  ;))

but fist some days here with friends!

(is it: "...and microscope based analysis station was established."

Either would be correct, depending on the rest of the context.  But, then, who are we Americans to be judging English.  We've butchered the language far beyond its original etymology, then we went and added all sorts of madness to it.

As far as I am concerned, Dr. Nick, your English is more than passable, not to mention that it is infinitely better than my German.
