Some advice/help please
« on: March 09, 2009, 01:26:29 PM »
Ok guys, some of you have probably read that i have mentioned in passing that i am creating my own set of mini rules (pretty much done now).  So, currently I am tossing around army ideas and background/fluff.  I have a TON of ideas, but now i need to figure out how to make armies different from each other (within reason).  So, i am curious if anyone has any army ideas, and what i mean is Strengths and weaknesses... as well as what type of army they are strong/weak against.

I mean i know there can be shooty armies... melee armies... mobile/fast armies... slow and purposeful armies...

Anyone have any idea they want to share with me?

Hi!

I am quite fond of the idea of having armies formed of non human sized miniatures (A good example are the Growlers for VOR although the ogre kingdoms stuff for Warhammer is pretty naff) Another good original force were the Elementalists for Crucible as the only human type miniature was the elementalist himself and he would start with a small retinue of elementals but could summon more!

It would be quite nice to see forces consisting of a few really big guys or a ton of really small ones....

Hello

I like the idea of a army that is not human in base at all. Like an army of woodland creatures lead by some greater spirit. There would be a nature spirit who calls the creatures to battle, you could put bears, wolves, stags, and even pixies or sprites into the mix. Have small swarms of creatures that harrass the enemy, like large flocks of birds or swarms of field mice. Natures wrath incarnate.

From a Sci-fi POV...

Shooting Army Types:

Balanced-  fairly decent (trained?) core troops with a  good Selection of Squad Based weaponry as specialist options (GL/LMG/ Lt Anti-Armor (think LAWS or AT-4 rocket)) as an UPGRADE to trooper instead of another model in the squad.  Elite troops *should* be based upon the core elements as they are usually a better-trained core trooper.  Example of this would be Capitol's Infantry squads and the "common" elite choices (Rangers and Sea Lions as examples).  One or two possible juiced units for the Short Range Fire-Fight or Brawl (Assault Marines and Free Marines) should exist but be considered an Un-Common choice.

Fast Armies: Some Long Range options for covering/support fire but the vast bulk of this sort of army should be designed for short range gun battle or the Hit and Run (ex: Bauhaus' Militia combined with Commandos or JK's with Skimmer support; 40k Tau forces that are stealth-suit and Devilfish-borne Troop heavy; Space Marine armies focused on Scouts and Fast Attack/Assault Marines)

Slow and Ponderous-  Firepower Intensive.... but low on maneuverability.  These forces tend to rely on cleaning the field of foes via lead down range.  Few fast maneuver elements... the Imperial Guard from 40k is a prime example as is the Necrons.

The Melee-centric

Close In troops-  as the label says.... close in bloody work with some shooting (mostly light template or pistol/SMG).  Wolfpack and Mishima for Warzone, Dark Eldar and Orks  in 40k.

Pure CC-  Nothing but blades, teeth and claws.  Little to no shooting.  Bugs is the easiest example of this.

Of course, there are variants to the above  the mind boggles.... but most armies fit the above molds.

Lots of ideas....

Is it sci-fi or fantasy?

Don't forget your undead!  You could use the same principle of the summoned elementals, but instead use the ol' standby...necromancy!  A necromancer controlling anything from a small squad to a large group of undead beasties.  Nice!  By doing this along with an elemental line of magic, you'd be tying magical abilities into some sort of commonly-threaded system.

Also, you could refer to the old movie, Fire & Ice.  You'd have 'Necron', or a powerful mage able to control the elements and a horde of subservient subhumans.  Opposing them would be the forces that use fire and lava, but are otherwise human and very medieval in structure.  Oh yeah, they fly large pterodactyls, which is always cool!

it's Universal...  ya ya I was thinking about Necromancy BUT i guess i don't wanna have the "same ole same old" BUT i probably will have to huh?

PLUS; my system has a custom army builder so i suppose it's not super important to have great ideas.. mainly wanna have some variety to kick things off and for people to playtest it for me.

Kind of a GURPS for wargaming, eh?  Kinky.

If that's the sort of game you're making, then it needs to be as generic as possible.  The fluff (universe, back story, etc) is totally optional.

If you want a good example of a viable system that gives you the option of using the story provided, then go to http://www.groundzerogames.net/.  Their games are sci-fi, but can be used for any universe.  Stargrunt II is the squad-based game and Dirtside II is the tactical level game.  Full Thrust is possibly one of the coolest spaceship combat action games I've played.

I've seen you over at No Limits; I assume you aren't interested in No Quarter either.

I wouldn't say "kinky" BUUUUUT...lol

Ya i have been over at no limits/no quarter but i started this system well over 10 years ago... been through alot of changes and has been altered through my years of gaming...

I want to have a setting for both sci-fi and fantasy... but yes there is a system built to create your own... I love fluff and developing my own.. i just want it to be interesting and fun.

Another thought i had was i am a big fan of a certain sci-fi/fantasy game that refuses to let people convert stuff to thier system or thier ideas to another system.. if you know who i am talking about then you will understand what i am talking about when i say thier "evil empire" is freakin awesome and i would love to miniature game with some of thier stuff... (if only the compnay who HAD the rights over 10 years ago DID something with it).  Anyway, i was thinking of other ways to formulate armies.  Instead of my current system (or in addition to) be able to say  "ok i was a recon unit and in thier army list thier being "Recon Unit"-Pick certain amount of troopers from these types...etc etc...

This is so hard to explain for me.. maybe i need to post my rules (or at least the army construction rules) up here and have you guys look em over.. you guys are smarter than me *coughtopkickcough* and see if what i am even doing makes sense.
