MP and panic/broken
« on: January 13, 2006, 07:34:05 AM »
While in MP, your squad becomes broken, the rally failed.  Do you spend an action to get up and then run back to the deployment zone or you stay in MP and crawl your way back to deployment zone?  Or, it is totally up to the player.  Meaning they can crawl until they think they are safe and then spend an action to get back to the deployment zone?

thanks

I don't have the book with me, but if you become panicked, you're ok, you just can't advance toward the enemy, suffer some penalties, and I don't think they can wait either.. Broken units however lose their MP status immediately (no action taken).

Peacemaker it.  eitherway a broke unit has to run.  I'd say that Warlord is correct though.

No book on hand but it is my recollection that a panicked unit can not be in MP just as they can not wait.  They are too uneasy about their surroundings to maintain the discipline needed to stay in MP.

Stalker is correct, as usual. Per UWZ page 65:

"Panicked units may not Charge, Aim, Wait, MP, or use Supernatural Powers while panicked."

I think that they would, but I'm not sure...

I don't think so. Why should they stand up for free?
Do they have springs under their body, when panicked? No.
It cost an action to stand up, there is no exception mentioned in the book.
So, you first have to spend an action to stand up, and then move away.

may not MP -->
a) may not GO in MP stance (so if he already is, he can crawl away in MP)
b) may not BE in MP stance
?

It could make sense both ways...

and that is at the root of my question...

I know that a squad that is panicked cannot GO into MP, but the rules of panicked status does say that the affected squad can't advance toward the unit that made them so...

But if the squad is in MP, then 1.) they aren't advancing toward the unit that made them so, and 2.) they are in a position in which they are harder to hit, so that they can regain their nerve...

if you go with that interpretation, then they kind of become paralyzed crabs...but it does make some sense...

still confused...

Unoffically, I'd say that he has to stand for his first action and move directly away for however many more actions he's required to.

This would remove bonus's from hiding in cover as well as get a total net move that is greater than what he would get just sittin there in MP.

Let's remember that a panicked model is not out of the game.  It just can not aim, wait, MP, channel, advance closer to the unit that panicked it, and is -3 on its CC, RC, & LD.  I could see having to spend the action to get the unit on their feet if they were previously in MP but, they would only need to retreat if they are broken.

Let's also consider this in game terms.  I just did well enough to cause your unit to panic.  So, I should be rewarded not you.  Why should I have to wait for you to activate that unit (which under most circumstances will be your last activation) before you loose your MP status.  If you loose your MP status immediately then my other units can now have an easier time shooting at you.

Got the book and looked at the rules and here's what I think.

For both, you cannot charge, wait MP or use supernatural powers.

Broken, you can't use a crawl action to move away from the enemy, but have to use move action to move away from the enemy. You can take a LD to try to do something other than move (not likely since you're at a -6). So there is no argument there that the first thing a broken model will do is stand up (next time it activates). As models only take actions when they are activated. I am revising my statement from before, that they lose their MP status immediately.

Panic. You are not forced to take a move action. So therefore you can stay in MP status. However should you lose your MP status for some reason, you cannot go back into MP until you rally.

THe MP action changes the status of the model and once in that status, does not need to take additional actions to maintain that status. Therefore in a panicked situation since you are not required to move away from the enemy, you do not have spend an action to stand and move away.

we played a game in which this very thing came up...as it happened, we talked about it really quickly and all agreed...

we went with Stalker's interpretation (convienient since he was there), and that the affected squad had to stand...we all agreed that they would have to do so because, since they were panicked, they wouldn't have the advantage of being in MP and of being harder to hit...

the squad got decimated thoroughly later that round...

but that side won the game decidedly also...
