Recruits convention
« on: February 23, 2009, 09:00:28 AM »
Hey all,

I know you've heard me talk about aspects of this before, but here's the full-blown advertisement...

Recruits - March 27-29
COST $5 for the entire weekend

Special Guests:
The authors of Ambush Alley Games (http://www.ambushalleygames.com/)

Tournaments:
  • Flames of War regional qualifier
  • WarMachine/Horde
  • Fields of Glory
  • DBA Ancients
  • Highlander CCG

Vendors/Companies of note:
There are more that are new to this Recruits that are reported to be 'big deals'.

Games:

Like the tourneys noted above, the games range from historical to sci-fi.  The list grows as the con gets closer, so check the Recruits site often for further developments.

I've been on the fence about what to run, but I think I'm settling on a sci-fi theme.  I'm not ready to run UWZ, but I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a game of Full Thrust and then springboarding that into a game of Star Grunt II.

Food:
Papa John's Pizza, hot dogs, donuts, coffee, carbonated drinks, candy, chili, brats.  All at cheap prices.  If you want to go out, then there are several restaurants in close proximity.

Lodging:
My wife and daughter should be out of town that weekend, so I can accomodate a couple of people (I already have 3-4 guys coming in for this), as long as you don't mind floor space.

Otherwise, the Recruits site has the available hotels listed.  My rec would be the Comfort Inn across the street from the con.  Not bad rates, close to the action and clean.

Other Stuff:
There's a flea market and later a silent auction that is always good for some stuff on the cheap.

There ya have it.  $5 for a weekend of fun.

TK - If you are still interested in attending, let me know.

Lemme check how this stacks up against Talamania III date-wise

Stemming back to a conversation we had a little while ago about a 3D Space Hulk game, I delved into the Recruits photo archive and came up with this:

It is cool and the guy runs it every Recruits!

Sure!  It's gonna be a packed house, but I think we'll be fine.  I have a four friends coming in for it already, so the guest bedroom and couch are claimed, but there's plenty of floor space and a chair & a half + ottoman that are damned comfy.

I think it's the same company that makes dungeons as well.  Great looking board!

The floor tiles look like Dwarven forge, but the walls are shaped differently.

I am wondering if he used printable terrain and mounted it on foamcore?

I don't think so.  From what I remember, it's solidly built.  It travels with him to various locations and from what I gather, he made it some while ago.  The walls are definitely 3D, not printed materials and he spent a lot of time painting them.

That terrainlooks great. Would be alot of fun to play on.

That same guy runs a game called Tournament of Champions that is loosely based on Warhammer Fantasy Quest.  It's a free-for-all.  You are given a character and you merely try to live for as long as possible whilst (one of my fave Brit words) killing as many other characters as possible.  It's a hoot!  The terrain features all sorts of well-made, but odd things.  My particular favorite is the giant mushroom forest!

My friend Jeremy has been known to camp out at that table for a solid 12 hours or so.

Here's another pic of some terrain my friend Kenny made.  Mind you, the troops are action figures.  The buildings are made from copy paper boxes (so he can lay them flat for storage).  He wanted the Gothic look without the GW price.

Looks like it still will work for terrain on any board.

Yep, although it would be monstrously tall for 28mm figs.  I was thinking about replicating it, but smaller.  I seem to do a lot of that.  I see, I learn, I duplicate.  I feel like I'm a Chinese manufacturer or something!

Nicely done overall!  I'm suprised the GI Joe scale figures have not yet taken off for wargames.  Think about it, with every toy, every figure you put out, you give it a stat and points value.  The kiddies can play like they normally do.  The older kids can wargame with them.  Considering Hasbro onws WoTC it's a wonder they have never made that intuitive leap with GI Joe or Transformers.
