Sculpting miniatures
« on: January 19, 2009, 02:29:51 PM »
Hi everyone. I'm new here and a sculptor. Anyway, I have always loved Warzone but kind of found out about it when the switching of hands took place and well before I even tried sculpting. That said I now am fairly good and was wanting to do some minis that could be used as proxies, or better yet make revised up to date sculpts. Do you think it would be possible to contact whoever has the rights and see if they would let me make "new" Warzone sculpts?

That said, I have a site which is not even a year old yet and I am also helping new artists, since I had no help myself. Here is the link to the home page:
http://trollsforge.com/

And I have a few pictures of my current demon sculpt I'm making. All parts interchangeable and swapable. Yes poseable as well. I'm doing some sci-fi minis of my own next but just thought I'd see what the majority of you thought first. Oh and if I missed something about no pictures forgive me and I'll make them links after you prod me.

Nice wok...you're right, you are good at sculpting. How long have you been doing it? Did someone help teach you or did you just pick it up yourself?

I dabbled in it for a little while hoping I could get good enough to make a few minis I really wanted. Unfortunately, I just don't have the knack for it....

I don't know if there's any interest from the license holder for Warzone minis....but I can almost assure you if you sculpted "generic" miniatures that would make good Warzone proxies, you'd find a willing and interested audience here. Myself included.

Hello

My advise, make a poll here of what kind of miniatures the community would like and I am sure if you did that you would have buyers. make generic scifi and fantasy minisatures that can be used in chronopia and warzone and you will get sales.

Neat stuff! Can't wait to see your SF miniatures.

Yeah, no worries about getting sued if you don't call them something like "Cybertronic cuirassiers".

Thanks for the quick replies. I just wish Warzone would come back again. There is such a need for some good sci-fi games, worlds, etc. I will probably do the generic stuff. I have a few power armored ypes with a little Fallout influence mixed with WZ planned and mutants.

As for sculpting, been doing it most of my life but did bronze castings, welding/fabricating. I've been using green probably about 2 years seriously now. Self taught, experimenting and lots of failures. I'm trying to do a few good tutorials for people to help them learn as well. Right now my best is this chainmail one, and a member of mine did the cahin itself:

Awesome stuff.  I think the suggestion tomake warzone-ish type figs is probably the easiest route to selling your work without a lot of legal mumbo jumbo and copyright hassles.

I for one would love to see a redux of the Zenithian Souslayer since they are impossible to find!!!

Blight Commandos for the Dark Legion would also be most welcome by many I'm sure!

I'll make sure to write these down as I go. I'm much faster with sci-fi sculpts, and enjoy them more. I am just trying to get a few fantasy minis out of the way for more practice and just learning more about the casting process I use.

well, if you can get a copy of the UWZ version of Warzone, just read some of the Cybertronic entries, especially some of the elites, to get a few ideas of things that might do well with the crowd around here...

maybe some techno-samurai types similar to what Urban Mammoth puts out...

just saying...

Heh...

I think I speak for the Cartel Players out there....  if we can get some good shotgun-toting models generic-armored enough for Darkslayers... that would be awesome. :)

Bauhaus Ministry troops would be a plus too- shotguns and axes. :)

Hmm, if you're looking at the UWZ rulebook and are willing to make a giant mech, the Mishima Oni Walker (or a close enough proxy) would be muy swank!

Dark Golems would also be good-and no too much of a stretch from what you are already doing.
VeezCon products:  Not as good as if they had been actually produced by a real figure company, but better than using your shoe to proxy with...sort of!

Thanks again everyone. I do have a copy of UWZ, spiral bond. I'll look into the stuff mentioned. Keep the coments coming because it helps me get excited that some one might like what I do in the long run. Gas masks are one of the things I sculpt best as well, so expect pipes and things like that along with the feeds for masks.  8)

Are there any other books still in print I could search for? I got my copy from the previous owner of the copyright and it was tough to get but he went out of the way to get me one spiral bound. One heck of a nice guy.

Dunno about still in print.... but if you go digging through some of the books from 1st Edition, there were a number of cool units that never saw the light of day for Imperial or saw different sculpts.

The Sterlings (1st and 3rd editions) were shotgun troops- the only Beret fig with one was the Imperial BB Captain model... and I'd love to see other models for it.  Lord knows the one unit of them I have, while cool,  is rather boring. :)

The same can be said about the current Rams- Chain-swords and Aggressor pistols.  I already advised wmerideth that if he was set in keeping them as a staple in his army, trimming off the SMG's and putting bolt-pistols in their place would be a good idea, as they look kinda like Aggressor pistols already.

There are so many models/specialists out there that never saw light of day that could be made... *sigh*

Hello

Considering the advise Archer, want to see how the Rams experiment works out first. If they don't work may want to use my guys as Black Berets. Would need the SMG's then. ;D
