Attack and Defend. Balancing ???
« on: January 18, 2008, 03:25:26 AM »
Hi,

Let's say you have a typical Attacker vs. Defender scenario were the attacker has to strom a building and clean it completly.

How many points would you give each one for their Force?

We have played this once.
The Attackers were two and had each 750 points makes 1500 Points total.
The Defender was one and he had 1000 Pts.
We had no chance against him.
In the rear of the field was enough cover, but before the bulding there was no Cover which blocks LOS.
Only some hard cover and we played with no enviroment.

How are your experiences with this type of scenario?
How many points more needs the attacker to make it fair?

I would recommend smoke, APC's (for cover if nothing else) and fast moving troops. Also it helps if the defender (building) is in the middle of the table as it would force the defender to watch more than one avenue of approach. To maximize this advantage, multiple attackers should adance from different areas of the table so that the defender has to spread hi troops. Also buying a large number of smaller sized squads will burn his activiations. If you have under barrel GL's available buy Flash Bang - taking away the wait actions should help you advance.

The best tactical move is to have a large force of small squads. Not only do you have an activation advantage but you can put some of the troops on wait to cover the advance of the others. If you have 6 squads and 3 are on wait, you have a chance to negate or lessen the chance of being hit by his troops. Troops with the Ambush SA  excel at this as they can reserve two waits and do not need an LD test to come off wait.

In a scenario like that, where the Defender is entrenched, always has cover, you want the points to be 2 to 1.  Granted that historically, there have been ratios where the defender had much less than that (The Alamo, Zulu Dawn, etc).  Try it with all three having 750 points and also some of the tactics that Topkick mentioned and I think you will find it more of an even fight.
