FLOCKING QUESTION
« on: November 20, 2007, 02:35:58 PM »
Does anyone have a good suggestion for making helping flocking and balast stick (i.e not shed during use???)

I've sprayed my terrain with Matte Finnish even tried hair spritz (recommended by guy in local hobby shop).

"Flocking" questions tickle my funnybone - sardonically, of course.

As for flock, I use Elmer's glue.  I coat the top of the base with it and add copious amounts of flock, dirt, ground foam - whatever.  Check some of these out:

If sing, sang, and sung, sink, sank, and sunk, and drink, drank, and drunk, how is it that it isn't bring, brang, and brung, think, thank and thunk, and ding, dang, and dung?

Don't even get me started about bad, badder and baddest.  Run, ran AND run...again?  C'mon!

For flock I've used thinned down Elmers or any other tacky white glue.

However recently I've even been using cyano acrylate glue, the thicker the better.  This really allows sand and stones to stick to it and become a very durable means of dressing up the base.
Back in my day we didn't have that fancy non-toxic pewter stuff.  We played with lead, LEAD I TELL YA! and we liked it.

I used blended grass (like the kind the sell for railroad kits) and rather than glue I use paint the base in green then dip the figure in the grass; the paint dries and forms a nice bond.  If you are going to use a solid flock like rocks or sand, paint the base in the base color you are going to use; if there are any cracks or uneven coverage then the base color will show through and the effect will not be ruined.

Both of the methods already mentioned are great ways to flock but to keep it from shedding once you get the flock on there, use Testors Dullcote spray and lightly spray it on the flocking once it has completely dried.

I actually paint on a thick layer of matching colored paint - generally grass green and sprinkle the flock liberally over that. Then I matt coat the whole figure....

I have started using Woodland Scenics Scenic Glue instead of regular white glue. It is the same stuff as regular white glue but it is much thicker than the usual Elmer's. It is so thick in fact that I have to be careful to smooth it out or it will form ridges on the base  ::)

You can find Woodland Scenics at any hobby shop (in the US) or check 'em out online at: www.woodlandscenics.com
It IS as bad as you think it is and they ARE out to get you!!!

Elmer's gets like, too - justlet it set about 30 seconds, first.  Alternatively, you could leave the lid slightly open for a week or three, and need vice-grips to squeeze it out.  (No autoerotic jokes, please - oh, sorry)

Some people might think you are Flocking crazy!  With so many choices, how do you make up your Flocking mind?
