Foldable riverboard
« on: July 28, 2007, 02:11:17 PM »
Besides painting I have used my vacation to work on a terrain project I've been planning for a while. It's a two piece riverboard which folds up for easy storage.

Materials used:
3 cm (1.25") Styrofoam (the hard noncrumbling pink kind)
MDF board (I think that's the name)
Hinges
Paints (I used cheap house paints for this project)
Hinges
Glue
Nails
Sand
Hirst Arts blocks
Thin planks for the frame

The foam is glued to the the board and in this pic I have also put planks on the sides for increased durability.

A closeup of the HA blocks. I cheated a bit and used thin foamcore strips for the lowest layer since I didn't have enough of the think blocks cast.

The hinges. I made an indentation for the hinges so that the board would fit properly when opened.

Hinges in action.

Finished picture along with some houses (I have enough pieces to create a quite dense city. The river is just painted with two shades of blue and then a few layers of varnish.

Vince taking a walk along the riverbank and checking out that strange green slime coming from the sewer.

The next thing to do is to build three bridges. I will also use some leftover foam to make pieces to cover the river if I want a plain board.

Request permission to make one for use at a future Origins -- giving you credit as designer extrordinario of course.

Go ahead Top, it's quite easy to make. I just had to remind myself to measure twice before cutting. :)

If one doesn't want to use HA blocks one could probably do something else to cover the sides of the river. Popsicle sticks for example. Or maybe cut a more natural river.

The river is blocked in the middle by the frame. I could have sawed an opening here but I didn't want to weaken the side with the hinges. I'll just build the bridge so that it covers.

I generally like boards that fold (hence the patronage of Warzone gaming tables) and this is really nice.  It seems to be as carriable as a portfolio case, perhaps a bit heavier.  Really nice.

I built a 4x4 board with a river in the middle.  Turned out to not look bad but I need to go back and put resin in the trench to make it an actual river.  That said, I wish I would have done something like this!  Mine is a pain to store and don't even think about transporting it!  Excelsior!

If you've seen the 4x4 boards we used @ Excelsior you can understand why I like modular and compacting. Excelsior!!

The EE boards are the stuff of legend.  I sadly only got to see them at the shop, but never play on them.  Here's hoping one day they come out of their cocoon and make an appearance again.
