terrian building
« on: November 04, 2005, 06:30:13 AM »
Ok I'm thinking (if time permits) in making a multi-floor building terrian.

it'll be shape like a horseshoe each side of the "horseshoe" will a different floor.
one a little lower then next.

My question if you were to build it :
1. what material would you use.
2. how would you go about making it.

I now these are broad questions, just looking for a little advice.

is it destroyed or open on the sides like an Oil Derrik?

How do you want to access the figs on the inside on different levels?

Each "floor" will be open for easy access.

thats the reason for the horseshoe shape (3-sided) idead.
each side is a different "floor".
each side (floor), from left to right, is lower like a decending stair case.
each side connected by a conner (where I'll put the stairs).
that way you dont have the floors overlaping each other and making it hard to play.

I hopeing this both give the look that the floors or inter-connected and have enough elbow room to play the game with ease. Though it does mean I need little more table space then most.
this at least is the plan  ::)

do you think this idea is little to crazy?

Steve, I played in a citadel scenario where the building was 5 stories high. The floors had high enough ceilings so your hand would fit in and the front and back of the building came off so all floors could be seen and allowed for fighting on multible floors with out needing several tables.  ;D

Steve

If you are looking for an "easy" way to make the stuff, check out this site:

http://www.ebblesminiatures.com/store/view_product.php?product=EBM20011

That is the set i like, however, they have several others as well, that should do the trick. At the least, the "ambient elements" make it worth while, things like chairs, cabinets, bathroom facilities, etc.  The cost is also nice!

Quick question-are you building it to fight from the inside outside (like a giant terrain piece) or to have battles inside only?

You could make the floors out of hard board and stack them.

Go to Sean Patten's fantastic site www.ironhands.com and he has an article on platforms that might work well for you whatever you choose.

If just indoors you can go modular (assuming you have the woodworking equipment and skill which I lack) and rather than worry overmuch about walls do interchangable floor segments.  There is a company that makes pre-done dungeon tiles and they have expanded into science ficiton (I think it's monster maze).  That would work for inspiration if you don't have the moola (few do).  For tiles, use the hard board and maybe cover it with plastic grids used in some sort of yarn craft (brain shutting down even as I try to remember) or mesh from the hardware store to give it a tech feel.  If you want to go uber cheap, you can print out furnature from Microsoft Powerpoint  (insert picture clip art other) or with some cheap popcicle sticks and plastic, make your own.  Before the shifted gears, Armorcast produced some nice stuff.  Your local store may still have it in stock.

Remember to use a mask when cutting hard board-I'm told it's toxic.  Probably should not have cut all that board in my attic with the door and windows closed.

If I were making this, I'd use foamcore covered with a light spackle and then spray painted and drybrushed. I'd then go back with paper, balsa and bits to add details.....they make all the difference to how a building looks and plays.

If I were making this, I'd use foamcore.

is'nt foamcore a bit fragile (I might be thinking of somethink else).

I started to re-think the horseshoe shape idea.
I have somethings else in mind.
oh well back to the drawing board to see if I can make it work. ::)
man I'm to damn lazy for all this :P

I think we should build this at Maplewood, I think we get more energetic there. :)

you might be right.

When we get together for that warzone game we can start laying out a plan to build it.
