750 point Elf force
« on: October 28, 2005, 08:35:54 AM »
As a long time Dwarf player, I've finally branched out and starting goin' with the Obsidian Serpent Elves.  What a change!  Last night's battle I had a 750 point force consisting of:
One macro pack of archers
One macro pack of axemen; the standard bearer had no magic standard
One Obsidian Guard
and one unit of Dragonskull Warriors.   Came out to exactly 750 points.

I got to use some Celtos Elves as proxies for the Dragonskulls, which weren't too bad, and I got to kick some Blackblood butt!

Dalton had two squads of orc swordsmen, one squad of orc assault warriors and a troll deathseeker; he's my usual opponent and rarely loses, but this battle would teach him to read up on my armies list!  Those Dragonskulls are BAD MUTHAS!

What a change from Dwarves!  All that movement!  I finally got to take the fight to the Blackbloods, and sweep around to get those archers to engage in CC.  The Dragonskulls took out the Troll, who was sittin' out there unsupported.  Dalton couldn't believe how hard they hit.  I think he thought he was still fightin' a Dwarf army.  I highly recommend a new army as often as you can afford it, or borrow it.

We had a friend watch the match, lent him the book, and now there will be another!  750 points is the perfect demo size to run.  Enough of a force that you can have a taste of different troop types, and run the game in about an hour.  Cheers.

They're sharpening their swords--Dalton now wants a 1000 point game on Saturday.  I don't even have paint on some of these guys.  Time to get busy.  Cheers.

lots of militia help out, remember elves can take numbers. With Obsidian I recomend a Lotus eater with an Admantite gollum he is a power house two wounds automatically they are excellent for smashing some Ogre Heavy Infatrey or Elite guard. Dont have my book handy but I belive his damage is like 15 and inflicts 2 wounds on a successful hit. I like to use 8 swordsmen that way I can take 2 Vorpal swordsmen, ya cant go wrong with having to roll a 1-3 for a success. And like I said earlyer the Militia are cheap so ya can take a bunch, and they hit for 10 damage on a charge. So when playing Elves remember to take a lot of troops.

Dig it Morf.  I saw the value of Elf swordsmen with the Vorpal guys, but I hated the sculpts, and with me, I'm sadly losing some tactical advantage just 'cause I didn't want'em!  I'll proxy something I like better.  I've got the militia primed, and they will fill out the numbers, with some Dragon Clan Slaves of course, being deployed in the lead.  They've got good armor and a shield, and they are Steadfast and can tie up a bigger fear causing baddie until others arrive.

The Adamantite Golem is primed, but I'm going to bust him out later--I agree on paper he's awesome, but having never had a spell caster on the board, I'm going to start out with the Chasm, Petrify etc.

I'm sure in our ever increasing war of escalation, I'll need the golem sooner than later.  Cheers.

I never take swordsmen with elves. They are just not worth it.

Millitia are so much better, for nearly the same role.

I almost always take a squad of 8 millitia in any elven army I build.

They are invaluable fodder troops, and can do some brutal damage with their polearms if
given the chance. All this for the cost of an individual.

The swordsman are really only good for that vorpal swordsman, but I like to have lots of troops to work with. I think the elves need a piece that has the ability to control two units like the stalker or Nameless, or the Earl,Then you could have two units move at once like a unit of swordsmen and a unit of militia., but until then I use lots of militia and occasionlly swordsmen. But the Gullem is a must he is pure power house, I take a few other spells that can be done in two actions (don't have my book) but I can't think of them. Elves are an all round good fighting force you can have some fun makin a good fighting force.

I think Count Elithiron can command two units.  Every army should have a commander type like this.

I don't know what WARMASTER is, but he lacks commanding presence...

I haven't played elves up to now...but I wouldn't go with the swordsmen either. With some points more you can get the axemen and I think they would be better...at least they do some real damage compared to the swordsmen.

Units like Count Elithrion, the Obsidian Guards or the Adamantite Golem make the OS elves one of the most hardest to fight armies.

just my two cents...

greetz,

I have never lost when playing Obsidian Serpent Elves.

I think most folks don't realize how brutal the army really is, until a unit of
Dragonskull Warriors storms thru your army, supported by Axemen,
Obsidian Guard, and Adamantite Golems.

Everything in the army hits HARD.

This is my 1,000 point tournament list.

   1 Black Lotus Eater @ 126 Pts
Stone Shield; Summon Adamantite Golem; Longsword
      1 Stone Shield @ [5] Pts
      1 Summon Adamantite Golem @ [61] Pts

   1 Obsidian Guard @ 80 Pts
      Runesword

   6 Axemen @ 203 Pts
      Standard Bearer; Battle Axe
      1 Standard Bearer @ [33] Pts
Standard Of Striking; 2 Hand Axes
      1 Leader @ [26] Pts
         Battle Axe

   4 Dragonskull Warriors @ 282 Pts
      Dragonbone Sword
      1 Leader @ [58] Pts
         Dragonbone Sword

   8 Militia @ 119 Pts
      Halberd
      1 Leader @ [15] Pts
         Halberd

   5 Archers @ 188 Pts
      Longbow; Shortsword
      1 Leader @ [33] Pts
         Longbow; Shortsword

Total Army Cost: 998

How many Golems can be summoned?  I know the Lotus Eater has to spend one action to control the Golem; can there potentially be three on the board if he uses an action each turn for control?

Josh,

The Lotus Eater has 3 actions, and the spell takes 3 actions.

So you can only have 1, unless you want to take a rampage risk.

However, you can bring them back into the battle if they are killed - up to 3 times total.

Thanks Firstborn.  I've only started with the Obsidian Serpents.  As I finish painting more, and my erstwhile opponent changes his Blackblood list, I will have to adjust accordingly, bringing these things into bear.   From the input I've gotten on this forum, I think I will get the Golem painted sooner than later.

I will probably just flat out ape your 1000 point list, with maybe one or two changes in the numbers by what I've gotten from EE.   The macro packs are great for starting out.  Cheers.
