So, anyway, I was watching Heroes last night and during the commercials, this most awesomest movie commercial shows up.

Hmmm, I can see a special scenario for Chronopia here.

I just read the reviews on Amazon, and it looks like a great read.  Couldn't believe that this is the same author who wrote, "The Legend of Bagger Vance."

Looks like a trip to the bookstore is in order.

I was checking out the behind the scenes stuff for the movie.  Now that my scrawny frame is in the gym I was blown away by the insane training these guys went through for the film.  The stuff they were doing would kill me.  Outright.

If I remember my history correctly, this is based off of an actual event in Greek history, in which Spartan soldiers held out (they all died) stopping a Persian army from crossing into Europe to invade...if i remember correctly, it was only about 200 soldiers...

anyway, the actual battle in history is mentioned in The Last Samurai...I don't remember the name of the "battle"...

Hello.

Thermopolae. The actual forces were thought to be about 300,000 Persian troops of vary degree. And about 6000 Greeks. 1000 Phocations, 700 Thespians, 300 Spartans including their king Leonidas. Plus about 4000 from other Greek states. They held for three days before being betryed by another Greek who lead the Persians behind the Greek lines in the mountians passes. The majority of the greek army retreated with the Phocations holdong the pass behind them and the Thespians and Spartians holding the front. The Phocations were pushed out of the pass after a brief battle, the Spartans and Thespians were wiped out. The Spartans get the most renown from the battle.

Battle of Thermopylae: 300 Spartans, 400 Thebans(Held against their will, Thebes had already gone over to Xerxes), and 700 Thespians.  The Thebans promptly surrendered during the battle.

I too am looking forward to this movie.  Hollywood puts out about two good movies a year, and I see them both!

BTW, Ultimate smack talk award of all time award goes to Leonides.

Emissary of Xerxes: "We have so many archers, our arrows will blacken the skies...."

Leonides: "Hear that Lads?  We get to fight in the shade!"

...or someting really close to that!

BTW, the true signifigance of the battle is that the delay of the Persian army allowed Athens and her allies to get their collective arses in gear and organize an evacuation of Athens, and to get their Navy in position to sink enough of the Persian fleet that Xerxes turned back.   What we think of as Western Civilization hinged on Thermopolye, and thus is deemed, by many,  the most important battle in Western Civilization.

OK, History lesson over.   Now, what if Leonides had a unit of Machinators and a few Attillas....

"I'm standin' at the gates of Thermopolae, and the Persians shall not pass."  My favorite line from Robert Duvall.

What really makes this production special is that it is being done by the same guy (don't know name-sorry) who did Sin City.  He went out of his way to match the scenes shots with those from the graphic novel-in essence to translate the one directly to the other.  Why that is important is not only will the story of The 300 match the graphic novel (unlike, say Eragon [blasphemy]) the imagery will as well.  A friend of mine read it and says that each scene in the preview matches frame per frame.

it looks like a phnomenally shot and scened movie...I wasn't aware that it was based off of a graphic novel, but considering how well this director shot Sin City (partly with Frank Miller's assistance), I'm not suprised that he shot it frame for frame with the panels in the gn...

300 is my second favorite Frank Miller book, right after Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and just before Sin City: The Hard Goodbye.

Needless to say I am anxiously awaiting the release of the film.

As long as the director doesn't fiddle around with the historical aspect of it I'll be pleased I'm sure.  I haven't read the graphic novel, is it fairly accurate, historically speaking?
