An Open Apology
« on: December 26, 2006, 01:27:26 PM »
Recently I was made aware that the word "buckwheat" was considered by some as a racial slur. I have used this word for years. I picked it up while watching Wiseguy years ago. There was an assassin Vinnie Teranova befriended while undercover in the Mel Profit Organization that used it. I think it was around Season 4 or 5. From there it just kinda snuck into my vocabulary.

I know I have used it multiple times over the years on the various incarnations of this forum. It was never my intention to slander or make racial comment on anyone. I humbly apologize to anyone I may have offended and will curb my use of this expression in the future. To the forum member who brought this to my attention - Thank you and a direct apology is owed to you. I am sorry and never meant to offend you. Thank you for the heads up.

Nice that our forum can resolve matters like this with a pm and a friendly reminder.  It's in everyone's best interest to maintain that level of maturity.

I think you can opt out for bucko.  That's close but not offensive.

Or just call people Spanky... he was the cutest rascal anyway!

There was a very early set of short movies, called "The Little Rascals".  It was produced probably in the thirties before equal rights were guaranteed for all.  "Buckwheat" was the black child in the series, and was parodied in the eighties by Eddie Murphy.  It can be insulting to African-Americans to be referred to as this name.  If you want to google The Little Rascals, you can learn more about the show.

I know there are probably so many things in Germany that we would not understand either.  I'm jealous you can speak two languages.  This is a particular thing to the United States.  I hope that helps and that I didn't just stir the pot even more.  PM me if I have.

Cheers.

I'm guessing a little on this one. BuckWheat was the name of the only black kid on the old "little rascal" tv show back when there was no sense of politcal correctness. Theres a old eddie murphy SNL skit that plays on this.

Interesting..

It reminds me of the anit-marijuhana campains in your country. this was strongly connected to black (colored?) people.

Buck Wheat seams to remind of smoking pot, doesnīt it?

Buckwheat wasn't the only African-American.  Stymie was too.

Wasn't there a Little Rascal named Froggy?

I think he was a black kid as well.
