Title: Chronicles of the Wayfarer
Post by: Jr_Boyd on October 09, 2016, 11:19:32 AM
Hello all, first let me welcome you to my new project which for now we will call CotW. In April of this year I felt inspired. I have met, emailed and shared with a lot of great people from this site over the last three years. I have been a game and miniature enthusiast for most of my life starting at 14 with some GW figures and now I am approaching 50. This stuff was the cool pre-slota base figures. My day job is I am in equipment sales and I specialize in print, design and color management. I have taken my knowledge from my day job and my passion from my hobby and see if I can create something special or as my wife says it will be a beautiful disaster. So I now officially invite all of you to join me on this journey to openly and honestly share your thoughts and enthusiasm to help me create my beautiful disaster.

Okay so let’s get started, as I mentioned in April this year I started the design process for a new game and figure line. As much as I would like to take credit and pat myself on my back it was some key individuals from this site that have made everything possible which without their help this project would not exist. Once I have everyone’s permission I will post the credits for each of them.

To get started my team and I have designed, printed and are in the process of producing around a 100 15mm miniatures and a game called CotW (secret ;)). These figures will make 2 very unique and exciting armies (just ask me). I will be making a new site to support this project and I invite anyone who is interested in being involved with this project and contributing to send me a message. I will need some groups to do some play testing. Over the next couple of months I will be slowly releasing product pictures to gear up for a late this year early next year release.

Here is my first preview, meet the Shield Legion from the Knights of the Kiln.

The Leader
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/IMG_6924_zpsnvfodqkl.jpg) (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/IMG_6925_zps5pcn83as.jpg)

The Standard
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/IMG_6928_zpszx7gay8e.jpg) (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/IMG_6929_zps3k9g5dzr.jpg)

Legionnaire 1
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/IMG_6926_zpsqjftdgcp.jpg) (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/IMG_6927_zpscj3ciwlx.jpg)

These are based on 20mm bases. The game will use a proprietary base called a battle ring and figures will be based three to a base. I put them on a 50mm base as a sample. I also put a picture of the One Kings at 28mm for scale.

(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/IMG_6933_zpsavjzb8cq.jpg) (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/IMG_6936_zpssg9yjxi2.jpg)

Let me know what your first thoughts are we have 97ish more figures to show!

Looking good so far.  My only complaint is the shields are too thick.
Title: Re: CotW
Post by: Jr_Boyd on October 09, 2016, 03:55:40 PM
I would say that is a fair observation. If it where to scale that shield would not be able to be lifted.

However you have to consider two things:

First the shield is very small if you notice it has an inlay that runs the edge which makes it thicker this is all enlarged for painting. These where designed not necessarily for scale but paintability and to be visual striking from a distance. Maybe it is just me getting older but I want someone from 5 feet away to say "oh they have spears"

Second, durability was an important consideration. Items at this scale would snap or be too bendy if closer to scale. We have tried to make them as user friendly as possible. These should be painted this week lets see how they look then.

Any chance of sculpting some 28mm minis too, to fill in the holes in the Chronopia line?

Glad to see someone likes them.

I don't have any plans to move to 28mm - 35mm at the moment. However I will be making some incentive models of the 15mm model as promotional pieces. My rules however could be used at any scale.

For Example..This figure is called the High Lawgiver, He is a 30mm reproduction of the 15mm Lawgiver. To get him you will have to partake in the Kickstarter. I am sure you could find a place for him in your army.

Joshua is the hammer too big?

Okay, I had David Stoddard put some paint on these for me. I asked him to work with them and give me his opinion and here is what he said.

Quote
Take a look.
I've attached photos that are not representative of how good they look on the table. Zoomed out they are much more impressive.

Here's my take:
-These are exquisitely detailed for their size. Perhaps too detailed. I think maybe the fantastic detail is lost on figures this small.

-I did three layers of every color and added a wash on the gold.
-They will not look good at macro level, but are fantastic at arms length.
-Actual assembly and paint time is 2 hours and 15 minutes
-I could easily spend more time blending and adding layers.
-I'm a fan. I'd love to show these off on social media, but I'll wait until you give me the "OK".
 Thanks!

Dave

Yes, in Italian is unpronunciable,  but as you know Italy is a marginal market for miniatures, so it's not a real problem

The shield is not too bit it is suppose to be a Great Shield, aka the Iron Guard shield and as such is providing a 'shield' against missile attacks and like a Roman Tower Shield you hide behind it. To say it is 'too big' or out of scale. Yup some weapons and shields are freak'n big because they are really not designed for close combat as much as advancing cover. As far as thickness goes. I could see it made a bit thinner, but in the end I'd be ok either way. Yet, if this is not the final product, consider thinning it just a bit.

Just my 2 pennies.

Hey Guys, So as I mentioned I have completed two races for my game and have the concepts for two more. I have gotten a few questions  about the scale. the reason I chose this scale was for a few reasons mostly revolving around cost. Cost for the consumer and cost of production for me. As to the cost issue I really like large models in my games and at 15mm you can introduce some mega creatures without the mega price tag and they are easy to store.

This is a War-beast in my game called a Tusk Bull. The platform is exchangeable and you have a few options. This one has rockets and the other has a canon. Hope you enjoy it.

Stunning!!  15mm is the way to go if you want to put these on the board, actually game with them, and be able to store them.  I'm digging this stuff.

I am thinking I would like to do a Kickstarter in January. Most companies do a Kickstarter because they are underfunded to complete their project. My biggest challenge is I am under-timed. I have already run into some challenges in production of the figures which I think all Kickstarters do. I am glad I don't have fifty to thousand people crushing me with emails asking what is going on, telling me I suck and asking for their money back. To be totally honest the thought of the process makes my stomach churn. The thing that does appeal is it is a great marketing tool. This project was not created to be the next big thing it was created because I felt a void in something I wanted so I created it. The amazing thing is I am as excited to see the release as anyone because it is pretty cool and I would enjoy seeing it floursh.

So, the good news. The first two armies are completely designed. The BETA rules are 90% done, in color with support material. I have purchased my own production equipment to print and cast the figures. I am currently having some very cool high quality art done to support the product. So this is where the small excelsior community might come in. I might even do a limited release to get some figures out there in a controlled quantity and start getting feed back on how to make things better and help me identify potential issues when i do the Kickstarter. I will be launching a support site just for this product and start marketing it by the end of the year as well. The people who will have a edge in getting the opportunity to purchase pre-release stuff will be the people I am familiar with from this site mostly because we are like minded individuals and I think you will be best equipped to make recommendations - so if you are interested you might want to do some posting. Lets see how November goes and I will keep my brothers updated.

I will post more pictures shortly...

Okay here is the first batch of pictures for the Knights of the Kiln. Keep in mind these are 15mm figures. Lots more to show. There are about 44 figures including catapult, cavalry, chariot, Storm tower and the mighty Siege Fortress.

First up the Knights - they have two right arm options, a hammer and sword your choice
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/KotK_zpscxpc543g.jpg)

Next up the Lawgiver Knight - he has two right arm options, a book and severed head
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/lawgiver_zps9eavvrrt.jpg)

The Warscreamers - the back banner, the standard and the one on the rights arms need to be glued on
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/jr_boyd/warscreamer%20squad_zpsixv2ogwq.jpg)

Heavy Weapons - This is a support attachment for the Knights - the one on the left has to have arms glued on

Does that chariot have a bowman on it. Good. That is what the Firstborn Chariot needed. In fact, my firstborn chariot I replaced the two men at arms with Archers. So they can still fight in CC but the main function of the chariot is high mobility and MOVE/FIRE actions. It went from Ok to I love this model in play and it now is well worth the points. Though I can see a single Man at Arms and a single Marksman type model, perhaps as good as an archer leader type model. Though a true Marksman is nice too.

Trust me I know what you are saying. Lego weapons is exactly what I thought the first time I saw them. It is very hard to get a true perspective on these in pictures because it is a trade off of detail vs. what they look like in your hand. What you are looking at are computer renderings and MACRO photography. If the items where real scale they would be very brittle and bendy. Even worse in my opinion they would not have a good table top visual appeal. These guys look fantastic in you hand and will be fun to paint. Keep in mind which is tough to do with these but they are 15mm - very small.

Hey Guys, here is another sneak peek into what I am creating. This character is called the Schematicist. He is a techno priest for the KotK. I have attached is art from the game and his 15mm figure. The inspiration for this model was done by Benedikt Schwarz or as you know him "Horned Owl" who has been a major contributor to how the look of this game has evolved. Also attached are concept pictures for his war engine creation called the Storm Tower.  Francesco has the Storm Tower model complete and it is fantastic. The back door drops, has a complete interior and you can put whatever figures you want inside. I am really looking forward to making the Schematicist figure in 30mm but for now you have to paint the little guy! Love to hear what you think?

Okay here are the first pictures of the Siege Fortress. Keep in mind this is built for 15 mm figures and is very large. figures can fit in the inside. the back door drops, the boarding ramps drop and the hatch in the center opens. There are two rams a spinning blade and drill. The rear platform supports a bolt thrower, catapult and a secret called the soul maul. This is much larger than the Storm Tower.

15mm is so much more epic - more troops on the table, and pretty (One-)king-size warmachines and beasts to run said troops over.

Also, I´ve said it before: 15mm are ridiculously cheap. Doesn´t necessarily mean you spend less money, but it means the army you get for the same cash is something huge.

(Actually, using 15mm miniatures such as the Wayfarer range as proxies for Chronopia - while keeping inch distances the same as for the 28mm figures - will result in a much more realistic feel to missile ranges. I´ve tried it with proxies and was very satisfied with the results.)

I like it!

Have you ever played OGAM (Of Gods and Men)?  Your 28mm avatar reminds me of the gods in that game, while the 15mm soldiers are the mortals.

No, I am not familiar with that one. I did a little googling and I see what you mean.

The game will have that epic feel to it. The troops will be over shadowed by some of the beast and War-machines. The starting base size is 40mm which will have 3 infantry on the base. Larger models like he Clay Golem and Sand Giant will be mounted one to a base. They will be able to fight with each other because the smaller troops will make things up with numbers. Models like the Siege Fortress will only be able to damaged by large creatures or support weapons like canons. I promise I am getting close to sharing a lot more information.

Until then enjoy the pictures.

John, congratulations on this great game. I'm glad when someone pulls out these kinds of personal projects.

Thank you, but for better or worse I am not at the finish line yet. The rules are 90% done, The artwork is 50% done, the first two armies are 100% designed, printed and master moulds. If it was not for the encouragement and positive feedback this would be a very daunting proposition. The Knights of the Kiln take over 65 molds/moulds to make. So when I kick in to full production I will be managing over a 140 molds/moulds for two figure lines. I honestly have been very surprised at what I have been able to accomplish with a modest budget and doing most of the work myself. Keep in mind this is a side project to my 50+ hours a week doing my "Real Job". I doubt I will take over the world but a small community will have a very personalized game that was created out of passion not profit. I guess I will let the rest take care of its self.
