Title: Semai's Painting Challenge what to paint next? UPDATED PHOTO 18/3/13
Post by: semai99 on February 11, 2013, 06:01:17 AM
Hi all,

Seeing that post about the resurrection of Warzone has got me looking in the cupboards at the lead pile and I need to give myself a quick size 12 up the butt to get some more painted as I have the bug again because out the announcement.

Now which of the Dark Eden armies I possess should I paint first? I've always liked the figures just never got a around to getting them painted. I shall challenge myself to get them painted within a month (or at least 1/2 painted)

Figure count for each army as it stands:
Armies of the Tzar - Sons Of Rasputin (95)
Crescentia War Parties (132)
The Templars (77)

Obviously no mounts were made.

So enter your choice in the poll above. Don't forget to vote           SOME WIP SOR PHOTOS ADDED ON PAGE 3 UPDATED 18th MARCH

Also any painted ideas will be welcomed

Let the fun begin...

regards

Pablo '99'

Another vote for SoR.   They are a viable army in UWZ, and have some neat troop choices.   Plus, I need ideas for my own SoR army...

Post pics!

Nice artwork "Frazetta" not seen some of these before, lets hope he does more...

On the topic of this painting challenge I've just undercoated a few of each fraction to do a trial paint job for each race (Horde troopers, Jihad infantry, Soldat troopers) to get a feel of how I want to paint the whole lot up I'll post pictures once I've got some base colours on them.

I'd forgotten how heavy the SOR miniatures were  :o

Need a like button. Curious to see what you come up with paintwise. I've been struggling on a colour scheme for my Soldats for over six months.

Ahah - great! Only id paintedem as dark skinned.

P.S.: Imagine a
remodeling as lion rider!

It would be a nice idea but I think I've got my hands full ATM painting any/all of the tribes.

On another note I was thinking about the base colours for the 3 fractions,

SOR  - a grey industrial rubble base
Crescentia War Parties -  An Arid/desert base
The Templars - a mixture of the above two bases arid with industrial waste.

any thoughts?

Maybe swap the Templar base idea to use for the Rasputins. Their environment comes across as more virulent and toxic.

Okay done some more work of the figures  I can't get the lighting right in the photgraphs at the moment as it seems to make them darker and bleach out some of the details and makes them look flat but you get the idea

SOR Soldats

Semai,  try shooting the pictures with a darker background, that will help with your lighting.

...and the figs look great!   Your shading looks very good, and I like your color choices.

On another note what should I write on the banner "Prague XII" or another city what was the name of the city that was wiped out by the Dark Legion

MadBrad Cheers for the feedback, I'm quite pleased overall on the colour schemes, I think the Jihad troopers have come out the best, I enjoyed painting them.

I'll have a go with a darker background for the pictures. The shoulder pads on the SOR are darker in the middle dark khaki drab like but more bone like on the rim.  Also the pictures are quite large if they were a 1/4 of the size that would be more like the originals.  I've also noticed I've not done the nails on the Templars yet  ::)

Yep I'll keep spamming the boards with my update posts  ;D ;D ;D ::) ::)

I've decided to do all the bases in one go when I've finished this last lot of figures.

No takers on what city the Soldats should be from I was thinking Zurich as it was destroyed by the Dark Soul in the old fluff.

Latest batch of SOR ready for viewing. They would have been done quicker had I not been distracted but some Cybertronic figures I spotted as I was getting these out to paint  ;D see my new thread for those..

Pictures still a bit bleached out will do the bases all in one go with the others, contemplating getting some resin scenic bases or might just finish them myself in an Arid/Industrial scheme

May i ask why the minis stand on these wood
pieces - are they fixed or not and if how?

They are glued on with a little bit of white glue (sometimes know as wood or craft glue) and left overnight makes it easier to do a couple minis at a time and you can easily spin it around in any direction to paint the details just don't put the figures to close to each other otherwise you can't get to all the details, after they are finished as they slightly overlap the base you can insert an screwdriver and carefully pop them off.

I saw it once in an tutorial but never tried it myself. Does it work well?

You have to get the amount of glue right for the weight of the mini the next lot I do I'll take a picture of the base. You want enough so they don't fall off but not to much.

I find it works well you just have to figure out which is the best position on the stick of each set of minis and how many 2 or 3 on each one easily done by doing a dry run first or using blue tack before you glue.  Ideally you want to balance the weight on the stick for ease of holding thats why I tend to do 2 or 3 of the same figure on one stick also makes it easier to do batch painting as you are painting the same bit on a couple of minis at a time.

I do the same for 10mm Warmaster figures as well except I use double-sided tape on the base instead.
