Title: Aiming when using a direct fire GL
Post by: luckyone on October 17, 2011, 08:38:00 AM
Looking into this rule there has been some questions raised during game play -

Can you aim a GL with Direct Fire only in its weapon description?

I am leaning towards yes because -

page 42 aim - directly placed template weapons cannot be aimed
page 121 - there are two types of templates - directly placed and ranged templates

When using the GL (direct fire only) you use the range template I believe.

Looking for a rules answer please.

Tim,

It makes no difference whether the the GL is Direct fire or indirect fire.  Direct Templates (Shotguns, Flamethrowers, et al) may not be Aimed as there is no To Hit Roll*; in actuality, there is no bonus to be gained from the Aim Action, as Direct Templates' DM is unaffected by To Hit Rolls*, therefore, the Action is not necessary.

Ranged Templates (GL, RL's, et al) use a To Hit Roll, and may be aimed.

* - In an environment that could produce a Weapon Malfunction, a "To Hit Roll" is made to determine whether the weapon malfunctions; this roll, still, does not affect the DM of the weapon - it only determines whether the weapon may be used on that Action, and whether a subsequent Action is needed to "clear" the weapon.

Just to clairify you do roll to hit with direct fire GL and RL it is a ranged templete and aiming can turn a negative to a possitive or a 1 to a 4, etc. You have to roll to hit to see what you miss by to determine damage.

Correct!

That is how it is written in the FAQ file.

Direct or indirect is not the issue; rather, whether the template is directly placed (shotguns, flamethrowers, etc.) or ranged (GL, RL, Grenade, etc.) is the deciding factor.  Ranged templates may be aimed.  Directly placed templates may not be aimed.
