Title: Mass Distortion's Painting log
Post by: MassDistortion on May 07, 2010, 04:59:40 PM
This has now turned into a general Painting log for me. I have begun work on my new Dwarf and Devout armies

(Updated Oct. 17/10)

Completed
Chariot
Repulsar Knight Marsman
The Judge
Repulsar Knight

Work in Progress
Greatsword Followers
Stalker
Enlightened
Firethrower team
Dark Tusk Totem (gray flesh)
Dark Tusk Totem (brown flesh)]
Vulture Crossbowmen

Waiting for motivation/inspiration to complete these as they are all fairly done and just require final touch-ups
Chronomancer
Enlightened
Nightwalker
Mounted Knight
Mounted Axeman
Iron Guard (x4) + Leader
Black Sisters (x4)

Here is the process I went through with The Judge. It started off as a lighter character but then I remembered that the Judge is pretty much the darkest individual in Firstborn. I apologize ahead of time for some poor pictures, most of these were taken from my phone.

(http://bassdrop.ca/toshiro/minis/Judge_A1.jpg)   (http://bassdrop.ca/toshiro/minis/Judge_A2.jpg)

Here you can see I wanted to add a little bit of trim and the direction I was initially going with.

(http://bassdrop.ca/toshiro/minis/Judge_B1.jpg)   (http://bassdrop.ca/toshiro/minis/Judge_B2.jpg)   (http://bassdrop.ca/toshiro/minis/Judge_B3.jpg)

While trying to make this darker, I thought of trying maroon to accomplish this. It looks pretty shady to me personally and I quickly changed that - but here is how it looked...

(http://bassdrop.ca/toshiro/minis/Judge_C1.jpg)   (http://bassdrop.ca/toshiro/minis/Judge_C2.jpg)   (http://bassdrop.ca/toshiro/minis/Judge_C3.jpg)

These pics look fairly similar to the completed ones. I could have easily stopped here but I felt I could add a little more detail.

I later had a random idea of adding black highlights to his knee pad and "bible" which you'll see in the final pictures :) This idea came after adding white trim to the shoulder pads and a black trim on the cowl.

WOW!!  Welcome to the boards, first things first.

Now the painting.  For some reason, we've had more people showing off great painting for our beloved games, and now you're in the mix.

That Judge is as scary as the fluff.  I've not seen a more menacing paint scheme on this model.  The colors, shading, and highlights bring every facet into the character of the piece.

Kings to you, and have some karma.

Thank you....

I've seen some great paint jobs on these forums which helped get me back into painting. It's been fun picking it up again.

Here are a few poor pictures of the Repulsar Knight I'm working on. This is probably the quickest I've painted a mini. I didn't take many pics of the progress I've made but I'll try to snap some today. I'm aiming to complete it this weekend.

The first pic is to demonstrate the Regal Blue paint I'm using. It's quite dark and hard for my phone to pickup.

The last picture shows an Iron Guard I'm working on. This colour scheme seems to work well for Firstborn. Blue Steel can have great results! :)

Welcome aboard Mass Distortion!  Great to have you with us.

Love the painting on the Judge.  The colored knee pad was a twist from what I've seen in the past.  I'm reserving future comments on him until you've fiinished basing him.

Nice touch on the Repulsar Knight's gold/black hem at the bottom...I think it would look good on the wrist cloth too.

Can't wait to see how you finish the Iron guard.

Here's some pics I took this morning of the Repulsar Knight. Since these were taken, I've changed the wrist cloth to black and I'll add a gold trim soon. It does look better but now I'll need to make an adjustment to the hand guard. I'll probably try blue steel.

This is the High Elf Repeater Bolt Thrower from Warhammer that I'm using as a proxy for a Vulture Impaler. I've constructed a base for this and I plan to purchase 2 Dwarf proxies that fit the part. If anyone has a suggestion I'd be happy to hear it :)

oh, and I forgot to put the handles on for the pic  :P

Here are some updates on the Firstborn Chariot I'm working on.

Here are some phone pics of the wood stain look I'm going for with the interior of the chariot. I've also tried to do some shading on the base.

MD,

just want to chime in here and say these look great!  I just started collecting firstborn myself...and when I get around to painting them in 2018, I'm going to look back at this thread for inspiration!

Hello again, here is another update. I'm nearing completion of the Firstborn Chariot. I need to complete the rider and 3 of the horses.

Here is the Knight! I just need to touch up the adhesive marks on the wrists.

So I was able to finish the Marksman in 1 sitting. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Thank you. I like this colour scheme for Firstborn minis...

Here's an update on the War Chariot. I plan on making the base look more like a path or road. The rider has no detail on it's face now but I'll fix that :)

The color combos definately work together nice job.  What are you using for the base "filler"?  I usually use spakle or some other wet work substance and use a bit of water to smooth out the edges.

Looking forward to more updates.

For the base I used a lid from a container of screws and then gave it texture using Poly Urethane. Recycling from work  ;D

No offense intended, but the base looks like it was textured with green cake icing, what with all the little peaks and all!

It's been a while since I've posted any updates. I am now using this thread as a paint log for everything instead of just Firstborn. I have begun work on my new Dwarf and Devout armies.

Greatsword Followers
I couldn't decide between 2 colour schemes so I decided to use both.

Maybe flickr is blocked by your work network? Try visiting my photostream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/massdistortion/

Here's an update on the Iron Guard I started ages ago but I wasn't comfortable with the blue steel colour scheme I had. I changed it to what's been looking great so far and I can't wait to get a pic with a decent sized army in the same scheme. It reminds me of my Capitol days about 12 years ago, that American army scheme was fun to work with  :o

The close-up shot is an attempt to "show-off" the metallic look I have so far. Base coat of Codex Grey and then I dry-brushed some Boltgun Metal on top. The armour has a more realistic shine to it, which is hard to pick up on my camera with poor lighting :)

I will be changing that gold bonnet to black, it's distracting!

If you do decide to paint the bonnet black I would paint the raised edges of his shoulder guards with the gold color to help balance the gold "edging" on his knee pads/guards. (just my opinion)

I like the color scheme as it's dark in a kinda "noble knight" way.  What color are you going to paint the tassle on his spear weapon?
Title: Re: Mass Distortion's Painting log
Post by: MassDistortion on November 27, 2010, 06:13:51 PM
For the tassle/hair I used Kommando Khaki and I'm considering dry brushing Dragon Gold on it and then black washing.

Does anyone know what the current "Flesh Wash" is? I only have my bottle from 10 years ago and it's running low :)

The GW washes are pretty good.  I highly recommend them.  I think you would want to try the "Delvan Mud" (kinda dark) or "Gryphonne Sepia" (dries with a kinda light/gold tint) or even "Ogryn Flesh" (which has a redish tint to it).

If those don't do it for you I have had good results with Game Ink colors/inks/washes.  You might want to check 'em out.

It's been a while since I've posted any updates. Hope everyone is having a nice Winter :) Good time to get a lot of painting done. Here was my view for the majority of February

I have completed the Firstborn Mounted Knight and Mounted Axeman but I forgot to take a pic of them before I gave them back to their owner. Here are shots of what they looked like before I completed them.

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5252/5493008132_f45acd411b_m.jpg)  (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5259/5493008108_a0dfe1df51.jpg)

Here is an update on how I've changed the Iron Guard:
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5213/5492378665_12b2fcd2d8_m.jpg) (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5251/5492378691_a38fce145e_m.jpg)

and finally here is what an Elf War Killer is shaping up to look like. Crystal House of course.

and now with the finer detail update and some touch-ups. I've used 2 little gems that keep falling off one of my gf's shirts. Eventually I'll have many of these ::) I'm thinking of moulding around the gems so they don't just jut out oddly. I dry-brushed some Silver in the smoke on the shield, it really pops out when you see it in the light. It's something I'm having difficulty capturing in photos.

Hey it's been a while... hope everyone had a great summer. I've completed an Adamantite Golem which is below. I have a lot of models currently on the go including a dragon riding a chopper that I bought in Vegas. Can't seem to stay focused on the same units every time I paint. Soon I will post updates on the following:

Vulture Crossbowmen
Dark Tusk Totem (x2)
Horned One Spearmen
Horned Skull Champion
Dark Tusk Hero
Firethrowers (x3)
Iron Guard squad
Dragon clan slaves
Elven Axemen
Obsidian Guard (x2)
Crystal Knight
Flying Dragonbane
Greatsword Followers (x lots)
Soulflayer

I haven't posted anything here in over 5 years. Shortly after my last post, I moved and all of my minis have remained packed until last weekend. I decided to throw some paint on my SoulFlayer and try to complete one of my Tormented. Went with a retro 80's sort of colour scheme on top of some soon to be leathery flesh. The Tormented has some of that leather action going on too.  ::) Here's some pics
