Title: Chariot Building Contest
Post by: T Prime on May 12, 2009, 04:01:55 PM
Whether you were at Talamania III or not, I doubt there was anyone who wasn’t in some way tantalized by the chariot races we ran. William’s superb chariots (all custom builds) were both a thrill to look at and fun to play with. Based on the responses to those pictures, you agreed. Those models were nothing less than inspiring and it is in that spirit that we have decided to hold our first Talaminiatures Chariot Building Contest.

This is a fun contest, meant to inspire each other. Keep that in mind as you proceed. A secret panel of Judges (names withheld to protect from graft) will score the entries and determine the top three winners in each category. There are two categories for this contest, an Ultimate Warzone Competition and a Chronopia: War in the Eternal Realm Competition. Talaminiatures and Veezcon Industries, and some other friends will provide prizes as we proceed. A special section will be added for this in the painting area. This contest is open to all forum members and the following rules apply.

RULES

   1.     Entries must be submitted in final form by photos by midnight on 08/15/09, or else be disqualified.
   2.     Final entry photos must include a left, right, center, rear and overhead shot of the model(s).
   3.     Only one (1) entry per category per person.
   4.     All entry designs must be chariot styled (i.e.- a conveyance pulled by something).
   5.     All entries must be based so they could be used in game play.
   6.     All entries must use models designed for the two games. Alterations to the posing, etc…are allowed.
   7.     Conversions are welcomed so long as the basic figures and such remain identifiable.
   8.     If a model has not been released for the games and you have made a proxy for it yourself, that is allowed. Substitution of another company’s models is not encouraged. Scratch
            built vehicles are welcomed.
   9.     Creativity is the name of this game, though it is set within the framework of the two settings. Make sure your entries adhere to the designs and motifs established therein.

JUDGING

Judges will rank entries based on the following five criteria:

  1.     Overall Design. How well the model is crafted and assembled, how well it conveys movement and action.
  2.     Creativity. How well the model captures the flavor of the game/race/rules.
  3.     Basing. How well the base completes and compliments the model you created.
  4.     Quality of Conversions. Pretty self evident.
  5.     Painting. Including technique, neatness, skill in execution, coherent color scheme, and overall appearance.

Dang!!  Mine's already ineligible.

Thought should be given to the fact that these ranges aren't in production, and some may be loathe to use their last Ripper Beasts to convert to a racechariot.
Title: Re: Chariot Building Contest
Post by: T Prime on May 12, 2009, 04:43:23 PM
No. They can do it, there are creative alternatives.  Ripper Beasts don't have to be hard mounted.  Think of the dioramas presented in WD where the models are part of a scenic display but removable for play.  :D

Okay.  That's got me thinking.

There are an awful lot of things you could do without ruining the integrity of your models.
;) ;D ;) ;D

Well, I'm probably going off reservation a bit, even if it disqualifies me!!  It's the only time I can do it.  Sigh.

Josh I have 2 ripperbeast if you need them.
Title: Re: Chariot Building Contest
Post by: kman on May 12, 2009, 07:50:18 PM
Is the point of the contest to convert up a model or just build a chariot of some sort?  In other words, would an entry lose creativity points if it was a released model (i.e. the Firstborn chariot)?
Title: Re: Chariot Building Contest
Post by: T Prime on May 12, 2009, 08:06:42 PM
You can use a firstborn chariot without penalty if you are doing a firstborn chariot.  Your creativity isn't hurt by this.  The point is to build a chariot and have fun.  If you enter the FBC as sold, that's great.  If you add to it, just as good.

I have a plan for my Chronopia chariot already. :)

Post by: joshuaslater on May 13, 2009, 06:16:10 AM
I'll have to build two!!  I'll enter the legal one in the contest.  I think I will call it: "Coil's Bane."   ;D
Title: Re: Chariot Building Contest
Post by: Alxbates on May 13, 2009, 09:22:36 AM
Hmmm... I'll have to enter something for Chronopia.

Off the top of my head, though, there aren't any Chariot-type conveyances for the Devout.

Am I out of bounds if I come up with something new, a new chariot type?  Something that just looks cool, and is based appropriately, but maybe doesn't have rules in the game?

Near as I can tell, the intent of the contest is for the chariot game at the end of Talamania rather than any in cannon pieces (I don't recall any chariots in UWZ).

Be inspired and produce your own!

Take a look in the Talamania III pic thread to see what type of creations we are talking about.

Bill Refsland's Devout Chariot had two Nameless Beasts, you know, the phallic lizard things, as the engines for the chariot.

It's all about fun.  The Dwarf one has a Dark Tusk Totem pulling it, the SOK and Firstborn have horses, as do the Elves, though I would have made theirs with Dragonbane!!

The pics may have to be moved here for inspiration.

Hello

I thought the SOK chariot had two  Elk from the Monarch pulling it.

William is right, the SOK was pulled by twin Monarch Elks...very nice indeed.  It was beautiful.

Got some great ideas. They have to do especially with the following rule:

All entry designs must be chariot styled (i.e.- a conveyance pulled by something).

I am thinking Warzone Capital.

So what is the typical base size?
Title: Re: Chariot Building Contest
Post by: dmcgee1 on May 24, 2009, 08:58:16 AM
2" to 3" by 3" to 4", or so.  There is no standard.  I would say that 4"by 5" would be the upper limit.

I'm looking at my "hobby priority list" of things to do, and I may have to back out of my intention to enter the contest.  I've got a couple three things I need to sculpt, pretty much everything in my Forge of Ice catalog still to paint, and a couple of units for my Wargods world campaign army to paint, too.

Building and converting a Chronopia chariot is on the list, but I really shouldn't do it before I do the other stuff...

*sigh*

There just aren't enough hours in the day... :(

Cant wait to see what people come up with!

I am planning on building a barbarian wartower for Leviathan and may steal any good ideas I spot!

While on the subject does anyone know where I can get hold of some large spoked wheels  (probably need to be about 60mm across as the wartower is a bit of a beast!)

The other day I rummaged through the bit box of a friend and found three very nice chariot chassis. I think he said they were from Mageknight. With some conversions they look like they are going to make an excellent basis for my chariots.

I am having trouble even starting this project. The guy I trained for 12 weeks to take my position (VP's brother) went back to the production super job he had before he came over. Of course this happened right when I was on vacation. I thought I would have time to work on the chariot this week, but now I am playing catch up.

Luckily (excuse the pun) I have all I need to satrt the chariot. I just need to find the time to do it.

I was thinking of instead of a present for Fater's Day, how about a day to myself to paint etc.

I've got my chariot built as well. I didn't use any of the ones in the pic. Instead I scratch built something. I've also done some conversion work on the nepharite who is going to be standing in the chariot. Next up is painting the neph, the driver and the beasts.

I should visit more often.  This contest has me intrigued, especially for Warzone.  Based on the rules, I take it that the "chariot" can have more than 2 wheels and doesn't neccesarily need to be pulled by a beast or thinking but could use some type of other power, say steam driven.  I've got two great ideas for Capitol and one for the Dark Legion.  I'm moving the end of this month so I don't know how much time I will have to work on it until after the 27th but will try to get it finished before contest end.

Any extra points if it can move under its own power?

Wheels are optional as long as it is a conveyance being pulled by something.  A pair of Pegasus scout bikes pulling a sled would be kool

I hope I can paint mine this weekend... Although I'm not satisfied in what I have done till now, there is no time to wash the paint down. I had few ideas about basing the model, but the firstborn chariot is rather charging, so there shouldn’t be any stones etc. in his way… I will make some fast paint, and then just leave it as it is painted, I have too many minis to wash them all the time… I hope U will like mine firstborn chariot…  And I hope I can make it to paint it.

Well, the deadline has come and gone!  For those who finished...well done and congrats.

I know many of you have started works but never got around to finishing them.  Life happens.  Judging will commence this week so if you have finished your models make sure they are posted online by this evening.  However, since there are some very cool "in progress" works I have heard about, we will open the second round of the competition using the same criteria and ending at Talamania IV.  So if you missed this deadline, you now have a new one.

The Judges will confer and winners announced this Friday.  Thanks for playing!
