This is WIP of my Sea Lion Sniper. The model is conversion of Catachan Sniper from W40k (Games Workshop) - the original model doesn't exist.
The conversion is not my work.
On this model I test colour scheme for my Capitol army.
Armour, flesh and pants are already done. Another one pic from progress will be posted next week.

-
Nice work on the shoulderpads. I like the flesh tones as well. Im looking forward to the update.
-
The following is merely a suggestion.
Make the T-Shirt and Shoulderpads a different color. It will add some variety to the figure. You could add a camo pattern to the shirt, or put some camo on the shoulderpads, and leave the shirt solid blue. You also paint the shirt a darker blue (or maybe black), and keep the current colors on the shoulderpads. My opinion is that figures look better when major details are differentiated with noticeable color changes.
Feel free to take or leave the advice. Even if you change nothing, the figure will look great.
Please keep posting your work, as it is very good!

Sorry for delay. Finally I post some new pics of my Sea Lion sniper. Now, it is very near from completion.

I know what you mean, but T-shirt should have armor feel on the mini. It is because the EE minis have shoulderpads and armor from the same material in MC reality, so T-shirt was not meant to be fabric, but armor.

This figure really came out well (notably the shoulder pads). I't eerie how well the Catechan works with Captiol.
It does not hurt that that is a really great, clean paint job. :D
-
Very nice work and conversion!
-
Nice job, a good proxy and a nice clean paint job, I especially like the colour of the pants cheers for the update.
-
That's good painting. Thanks for posting.
-
Excdellent proxy. Like the khakis.
-
Great job! Extremely well done.
-
Great job! Extremely well done.
I echo this.
I think I might need to bust out the Green Stuff and my small box of catachans. I think I can model some bodyarmr and modift a gun or two for LMG's... I've a crapload of Punisher blades so this might work nice.

I acnnot add to what has already been said, but I can hit the APPLAUD button.

Well done.

Here! Here! Bully! Bully! (that's ye olde English for "good job")

I hit it again - you should too!

DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!!!
Sorry, kneejerk response there.

My new project Cybertronic Deathdroid (and others) presented on Czech Warzone Forum. Sorry for only czech language, but there are at least color scheme understandable.

Nice work!
-
Your shading technique is very good. Nice combination of bright color and then heavy shadows to make the figure really stand out.
Great job!
-
Great stuff. Did you paint the Shekral fig too?
-
Great stuff. Did you paint the Shekral fig too?
Yes, I have painted all figures presented here. The DL figures are from my early projets about 6 years ago. All DL is painted with synthetic Humbroll colors.
-
Really nice work. Love the vibrant colors and use of shading. I have a few hundred minis you can paint for me any tiem! ;D
-
I like that Shekral - really well done, use of yellow and even a little grey underneath. Def. my fayv!
-
whoa. they look very cartoony (in a positive way). how the hell do you shade like that? you mix with water to make the color a bit lighter?... Really good job dude :)
-

Exactly. I mix dark colors with water to make shade a litle bit transcendent on the edge of the line, but not so much to have sufficiently dark lines. Often I make shade only with mix a litle bit of black with base color.

Aaah. :) Would you manage to finish a small mini in one day if you "stress painted" the mini with the same technique? And what is the average time you use on a mini? I'm just curious, because I have limited time to painting, so when I paint, I want to paint a lot, but also paint them good. Anyways, thanks for the previous answer, I'm def gonna practice on a mini. Patience and a clear vision is key I guess. :)
-
My last project - the Cyber DD - takes about 30-40 hours with decolouring, mould lines cleaning (the hardest job), preparing, painting and varnishing. Usualy I paint much slower, but this project was gift for my UWZ mate, so it was quite quick job.

Beautiful work....
I like the sniper especially and I think I may work on some of my Catachans in order to bring them into use for UWZ.
The beauty of them is that they can double as LI in a pinch too.... just make sure one has the right weapons created for appropriate use. :)

Hey, how do you guys do that where you add a quote from someone else's post? ;D ???

Hey, how do you guys do that where you add a quote from someone else's post? ;D ???
just press the quote butten on the upper right corner of the post. :) then you can kind of choose what you want to include in the quote by shortening it between the quote "code". And even write something totally different, but that wouldn't be morally right. Did I mention quote? :P
-
Good work all around Scorpion. Shekral is my favourite I think, although the blue and yellow combination on the EDD is really good as well.
-
This is my brain on drugs....any questions? ;)
THnx Nighthawk

what drugs, may i have some, please ? ;)

YEAH!!!! What Coil said ;D
*check load on shotgun*
Yup. What he said.... and I got a load of buckshot and slug to enforce it. Even money which is first. ;D ;D 8) ;D ;D
-
The load sequence would of course depend on the mission. For large groups I would probably load buckshot first. For entering bldgs and outside against unknown enemies I would go slug first.
-
Concur!
-
Personally I would use Shredders!! More band for the buck! Went ot a trap shoot this last weekend. Mde these county boys cry when a city boy out shoots them!! ;D
-
** edit **
some of you military guys tell me why should someone would use a shotgun (single shot, perhaps semi-automatic) when you can use a (bullpup) assault rifle?
like this baby, bauhaus style :) ;D

My first experience with dipping:
Figure on the left is hand painted (about 20 hour or more), on the right is dipped (about 3 hours).
More pictures is here http://toshirovo.com/warzone/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=16&p=5324#p5324 (http://toshirovo.com/warzone/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=16&p=5324#p5324), but in Czech language. If you want to, I will send some info about this project.
-
please do.
Very nice stuff!
-
Gotta try it. I have 2 cans of stain ready to go.
-
Recently I found new way of painting models, that is ideal form me, becouse usualy I paint only a few models per year. This technique names dipping an I use Quickshade Darktone (http://www.thearmypainter.com/product_presentation.php?page=1&ProductgroupId=1&ProductgroupName=Quick%20Shade (http://www.thearmypainter.com/product_presentation.php?page=1&ProductgroupId=1&ProductgroupName=Quick%20Shade)), which is easy to get even in Czech Republic.
On this models I tried usability of all my vallejo paints for dipping. I learn, that very dark tones are not suitable for dipping.
Here is comparison of my hand paint figure (left), which takes me tens of hours to dipped figure (right), which takes me about 3 hours ;). HI HMG was already sealed and I dont even clean it from mould lines. On HMG I tested scheme for my Mars army. I have some doubts about color of his armor (shoulders, breastplate etc), so maybe I will swich it for color of armor on swordless (but handfull ;D) sergeant of Sunser Strikers.
All figures (except Joe Kowalski) are sprayed with flat varnish.
-
The shading on those turned out very well. I may have to get some of this stuff to help me get all my armies painted up!
Keep up the good work.
-
I would like more info. I hate to say this, but the dipping is comparable. How frustrating.
-
Great results. Alot of people I know do this for fantasy armies. Looks great for Sci fi also.
-
My new model. I have tested some scheme for Capitol army:
The red defocused thing on the back is unit badge (red bufallo head).
-
Those look great! I need to try this for the army I need to paint before Talamania IV (A New Hope)
-
COOL! Go go Czech Republic!!
-
Always a pleasure too see your stuff!
-
My new testing marine (the black one). Black scheme will be on my elite troops (please notice favourite capitol camouflage pattern "devilcat stripes" and new base from http://dragonforge.com/ (http://dragonforge.com/)), while brown scheme will be on grunt troops. I hope you like it :-)
-
Looks really nice. The dipping produces really good results for you. I'm tempted to get some and try to see what results I get.
-
Thanks. I got this one: Army Painter Quickshade DARK Tone (http://www.thearmypainter.com/product_presentation.php?page=1&ProductgroupId=1&ProductgroupName=Quickshade) and I am very satisfied with this.
-
Has anyone used hardware store brand instead of quickshade?
D
-
Yes I have -
I buy mine from Ace - One step stain called Tudor Satin works very well.
I have done some research and I will try the darkest shade from "The Army Painter"
I will let everyone know if the price tag is woth it. I have a feeling it will be.
BTW - 'The Army Painter" company was creatted by two GW ex-employees. I have bougt a can of grey primer spray and ordered a can of the dark tone stain.
I can't knock it before I try it.
They do return e-mails and were very helpful with some questions I had about their grey flock.
-
I've had some bad luck with both GW and Armory primer so i will be interested to hear how this stuff turns out.
-
I just purchased a small can of "The Army Painter" darktone shade. It cost $30.00. I will try it first and see if it is much better than the Tudor Satin I have. I hope it is $30.00 is a hefty price tag.

New model for campaign Rotenburg Lt.Colonel Moore:

- paint
(http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/1841/moore.jpg)

-
That looks like it will work nicely. Almost done with my terrain projects, will start painting very soon.
-
Scorpion that is some really good painting there and the dip just really brings it together. I can't wait to see more of your work.
-
Great paint job. Love it.
D
-
Yes those are some very nice figs!!! Awesome paint jobs. I usually do an ink job after I finish painting to unify the colors myself.
-
Looks like the shade turned out well.

Being that GW is such a mastodont, and eats allmost all ressources and reigns as an absolute monopolist on the miniatures world, it's hard to find someone in the miniature world that isn't a GW ex-employee. (O yeah and they tend to get rid quickly of people with too much concern for the customer). ;D

I tried "The Army Painter" stain. It does work well. It smells, looks and acts exactly like regular stain. I volunteer Dave to do the taste test. ;D
I am not 100% sure that it (The Army Painter stain) is any better than the Tudor Satin stain I buy from Ace.
This would not be the first time G.W. or in this case ex- G.W. used a product another company sells - repackaged and re sold at a much higher price.
The example I have is their static grass. It looks very similar (if not exactly the same) as Noch (German company that sells trains/acc).
-
http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/noc/noc50210.htm?source=froogle
$11.76 100 grams 0.1176 per gram
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1030003&prodId=prod1095396
$8.25 15 grams 0.55 per gram
Last time I checked they were exactly the same product.
I think the one they use is sommer grass or spring grass and yes Phil/Dave that is the way "summer" is spelled on the Noch package.

I'm 100% sure that it is not better than the Tudor Satin stain. My first impression when I heard and saw 'the army painter' product, was : "wow I must find a stain in a home decoration store, it seems to give good results. I don't think I'll buy the 'army painter' range, It would be stupid to be triple price for a product where they only changed the packaging."
This product is clearly just a stain, it has not a secret magical formula. It gives the same results as awash, but just thiker, so you don't need to do it 4 times.
-
I have both stains (I guess we can safely call "The Army Painter" a stain now IMHO). I did see the same results from both.
-
I am back with new bunch of minis. It's my squad of LI (7x soldier, sgt, lmg, medic, gl, fo a cpt). Same dipping technique as above, but now I used splash-on technique for slighter layer.

That is some really really nice looking light infantry. Great stuff!
-
Wow. Just....wow.
Okay, for dipping, you dip the fig and then flick the snot out of it, right? I so want to try this out, but am uncomfortable with the process.
Tudor stain. What color is that? I have golden oak, honey pine and cherry at home due to real life woodworking.
-
Great painting on the figures. Bases are awesome alos.
For a good tutorial on dipping check out "The Army Painter" link below.
Their stain is very expensive. I get the same results from Tudor Satin (very dark stain almost black).

Minwax is your friend.... http://www.minwax.com/products/one_step_stain_and_finishes/polyshades.html#Colors
Tudor is the stain color you are looking for.
The cherry stain you have might be interesting on a figure that needs a red hue, but on flesh, it may end up making your flesh tones look sunburned. Golden oak is too light to get the shading you typically want on a figure. Honey pine is both too light, and would make your figures look more yellow that you probably want. Of course, experimentation might result in some new ideas.
-
I use The Army Painter Dark Tone, so I have no experience with Tudor Satin. Maybe results are similar.
Technique: http://www.thearmypainter.com/videogallery.php?videoid=3 (http://www.thearmypainter.com/videogallery.php?videoid=3)
But I remove snots more vehemently then showed in video (so I left very little quantity of dip on figures).
-
Thanks, fellas! I literally have hundreds of minis to paint and this method would greatly speed up my process. If I get this right, the process is:
1. Base coat
2. Paint main colors on the fig
3. Perhaps highlight certain areas
4. Dip and flick
5. Seal with matte spray
That's it, right? That seems too easy...
-
The steps above should work.
-
This method give good table top quality troops. Keep the paint jobs simple, and the dip takes care of shading and covering transition lines where you might normally "miss a spot". And you can always go back and paint in more detail or do some highlighting at a later date.

very nice Stuff! :o the Dessert Infantry is pretty awesome thx for sharing!
-
The figures look great! I love the color scheme - it goes very well with the dip shading. I've tried a couple squads with dipping with average results; I think a little too much dip stayed on the figure. your figures look awesome though.
-
Thanks for comments. I removed most of dip and drops with quite large brush (need to wipe out into piece of cloth).
-
Beautiful work Scorpion.
How do you base them when your done painting?
-
Thank you. I mady two holes into base in right points, then shorten wire. After append to figure is the holes glued up with epoxy adhesive from bottom of the base.
-
Very pretty. I am envious. ;D
-
(http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/4133/39035233.jpg)
I re-posted this image to reference my questions :) What did you use for the random bits and ammo/shells on the bases? They look fantastic and really add to final result. I'm also intrigued by this dip/varnish technique. I've never done it before or have heard much about it. How long does the overall process take? I'll need to read up on this.
-
Bases are bought from Dragon Forge Store. My bases are Wasteland 2 series:
http://www.dragonforge.com/Painting%20service/for%20sale/base_sets/sci-fi/wasteland_II.htm (http://www.dragonforge.com/Painting%20service/for%20sale/base_sets/sci-fi/wasteland_II.htm)
The longest time last preparing and painting process. Diping is very quick. Overall it takes much less time than my classic shading/highlighting method and result is the same (if not better) ;)
