Title: VeezCon Chronopia Painting Contest
Post by: Veez on April 11, 2008, 05:47:10 AM
Rules

There is only one category, but you may enter it as many times as you like:
Individual/Warband/Large Creature.

If the figure is meant as a member of a warband (i.e. spearman #3) it must be entered as part of a Warband.
There is no requirement for the figures to have been started prior to the start date (today) but they must not have been finished prior to the start date (today)
Ex.  You started your blackblood leader six months ago and it has been primed and has one arm painted, so long as it is not finished before today you may enter it.

I will be the sole judge.  You are allowed to hate me for my choices, but don’t hate me because I am beautiful.  Figures/Warbands/Big things will be judged on the following:
1) Quality of paint job (raw skill): 20 pts
2) Style of paint job (color choice, etc.): 20 pts
3) Figure base (decorate the base somehow): 5 pts
4) Figure preparation (clean up and conversions): 10 pts
5) Chronopianess of figures (your GW Bretonnian Knight proxying as a firstborn will not cut it): 10 pts

Entries must be complete by 1 July.  Judging will be complete by 7 July.
There will be three placed winners; 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  Prizes to be announced later.

Please declare interest in joining via PM to me.  Entry into the contest is open until 15 June.

Since Veez didn't say anything, I will be providing one prize.  I am going to make a piece of terrain to go up, I'll post pics when done.  It'll be worth winning I promise ;D

I am still hoping to have a cool terrain piece done, but I need to get on the casting.  My figure is around halfway finished.  So anyone else planning on doing this or should I just keep my terrain piece?

So I'm confused, I was going to email my pictures to you tonight as I haven't had time to send them to you yet, that's fine right?

You're two statements appear to contradict each other.  Contest is closed, and we have to post them by the first of July?

Well, I'll start us off with one figure, I'll be posting the other later as I have some touch up to do still.
Updated the pics with clearer images.  Also, added my Ogre Deathseeker.

Wow, very nice.  I love the rust details.  Hopefully everyone else hurries up and posts otherwise there will be slim competition for us.  Reminds me, I need to add some finishing touches to my Ogre today.

That's really nice Pekulior. Red is a hard coloyur to pull off, at least for me. I'll post mine shortly.

I've found that with a good base coat, it makes it much easier to do the shading. I've also started using a lot of the P3 paint from Privateer Press

It may be a little cliche, but I've titled this piece "Hold the Line".  I've seen people do display bases before, and always wanted to give it a shot, so ... I did.  Thanks again to Veez for pulling this together and for breathing a little life back into my favorite game.

@ thalon - very nice indeed! :) I like the display base. I know they have the potential of being a pain in the butt to get right.

@Glenn M

Love the deathseeker.  Man I wish I had one of those models.

The new photo of the Warrior of the Sun looks great too.  Nice work!

@ pekulior

Wow, a really great paintjob.  The aged/worn metal look came out great, and the red flesh has a lot of depth.  Very cool.

@ Coil

The repulsar Lord is well done!  He really feels dynamic rushing down the stairs into the room.  Probably to deal with the above Abyss Crawler.  Is that display made from Hirst Arts?  Someday I'd like to venture into that and make some terrain with those.  They always come out so nicely.

@ joshuaslater

Sheesh, how many elves do you have?  I have to admit, part of my inspiration to work on my Crystal Lotus elves came from seeing you get yours painted up.  And you had a huge force of them.  And now I see you have Helios as well.  Wow.  That's just sort of a dream of mine to have every faction.  It's great to see them in all their fiery glory.

Veez will have his work cut out for him with all the entries. Ha!  ;D

Kings to you Glen, on bringing that Deathseeker such a great paintjob.  Love the edges of the cloth with the yellow.   ;D

Post by: Glenn M on July 01, 2008, 04:22:36 PM
Yeah, they didn't come out as nicely as I wanted, but my brush is a little on the worn side.  Someday I'll go back and rework it when I have a bit more freehand skill.

Joshua - I like the elves, very toasty.  I find it interesting when people block color the armor as well as the clothes.  It gives them a nice pop on the table.  Mine admittedly often wash into the table as I use drab a dull colors for the most part.

Coil - That is a great little diorama, you could easily append it in the future with whatever figures you want which is cool.  My only issue with the piece is can the figure be separated for game purposes?

Thanks for the encouragement Dog, I need all I can get.

I was actually thinking of redoin' my house Helios that way.  You are correct, it does need something to break it up, colot scheme wise.  I thougt of using copper armour, red leather, and gold wash on the armour.  I think yours are perfectly good and would field them with pride.

I'm looking at them and wondering what else I can use instead of the brown for the axe hafts and top of the boots.  I'm wondering if good ol' black would be a good contrast, or if I should go with another, more muted yellow.  Thoughts?
Title: Re: VeezCon Chronopia Painting Contest
Post by: Glenn M on July 02, 2008, 08:35:20 AM
I'd say a black.  Another yellow would not work well in my mind.

i agree with glenn...black would be a nice contrasting color to go with...

This is why I have fallen for Brand X painting; Thomas will not only paint what I pay him and his crew to paint, but he will tell me paint recipes, basing secrets, and helpful hints on what I paint myself.

I think I'll hit them with the black, and post to get more feedback.  My only worry is them coming out looin' like hornets!!

Overall I'm happy with where they went.  I started them ages ago when I was still using white primer for everything.  The red metallic is a discontinued Reaper pro paint, and I stocked up on enough to finish the army with.  Brown ink over it brings out a nice look, even though I think I would change things over black primer all together.

The chainmail is another discontinued Reaper pro paint--Copper, which I slathered on and again just inked with the brown to get the crevices filled.  I call this my discovery of ink phase.

Overall a quick and dirty tabletop scheme, but I'm going to finish what I started with the overall scheme.  Even painting two armies this year, I doubt my pile of shame will dwindle much without help from Brand X.

Thanks for the feedback guys, and most especially to Veez, whose tireless work keeping our community active and alive is inspiring.  Kings to you, Veez.

Hey guys!

They are all good, but my favorite(s) would have to be a tie between Thalon and Pekulior. But the best diorama IMO would have to be Coils.

It's been fun (lurking) reading about this painting contest.  :) I would love to take part in a Warzone painting contest like this in the future. Good fun, and def. motivating regarding painting my minis.  ;D

Unfortunately I have lacked the motivation (I'm gonna pretend this is a great excuse) to do a themed terrain piece, however I'll still be providing the winner a piece from my collection.  I'll PM the winner and send him a list of pieces to choose from.

Later,
Glenn

And the Winners Are...

This was a tough competition but there were enough entries that I could still break it down to its three categories (judging them all against one another would have been night impossible given the skill of everyone involved).

Figures
Coil’s scenic base put it over the top with its vibrant hues against Glenn M’s Warrior of the Sun with smooth execution and subtle use of grey.

Thalons Elves with their scenic base (again the base-it was a deciding factor in several tight competitions) squeaked ahead of JoshuaSlater’s Helios elves with their fiery color scheme.

Big Things
Winning by only one point was Pekukior’s Demon; his attention to detail and intricate base was tough competition for Glenn M’s Deathseeker with its vibrant colors and dynamic posing.

Congratulations to all the winners!  Information about your prizes will be forthcoming.

If there are any questions/complaints/death threats feel free to PM me.  Do remember that I am fully trained in the killing arts and this is not, in fact, Sparta so there are no pits of death nearby.  Plus I'd just love to see some of you try and do that flying kick.  I mean really-that was incredible and I really doubt any of us are built like that.  VeezCon is not responsible for any damages or injuries that take place in your victory celebration or to provide comfort for your loss.  Remember, winners don't use drugs.

Thanks for running this Veez!!  It was definitely motivation and even though I was surrounded by incredibly gifted painters, it felt nice to be a part of this even with skills still being honed.

Kings to you.

Hmm, I am pondering the prize situation now that there are three winners.  I am thinking either look through my stuff and offer three choices one per winner, if I do so though, I'd appreciate a little help with shipping as it'll be a bit intensive on my end.  The other option is I am going to draw straws and give that person choice of what I've got available.  I have to ask though, are any of the winners non-US?  Pretty sure the only one who may not be is Thanos.

I think Thalon's Elves more than squeaked by my fiery Helios Elves, as they were indeed, fantastic, basing be damned!!  I think we should do more painting events to keep us motivated and finish all those models we've collected over the years.  Hm.  Anyone got some ideas for themes?  Both Warzone and Chronopia?

I'm still trying to clear my head from the victory celebration.  It may be best to slowly taper down instead of quitting cold turkey.

@ warzoneD: Thanks for the kind words!  The lotus insignia was indeed hand-painted with a brush, and definitely the most challenging part for me.  I've got a long way to go in the freehand department.

@ Glenn M:  Though your generous offer is greatly appreciated, I'd like to bow out of any prize receiving.  I was just happy to still be standing among such talented participants.

This was a blast to be a part of, and again thanks to Veez for doing this and getting me to actually complete some guys.  Minis completed since this contest = 0.

So I'm definitely in if there is a warzone/chronopia/terrain contest in the future.

I like these little contests, they're great for motivating me to paint more. Since I have all the armies I need for both Chrono and WZ I just paint single minis for fun now.
