Have you ever thought of or are thinking of converting Captitol Light Infantry troopers to...well LOOK better? I just find the whole idea of wearing drill sergeant hats dumb! I have a few WH40K Stormtroopers lying around and I think they'd make perfect Cap Light troopers if I replaced their Hellguns.
Does anyone else have any ideas for Capitol Light Troop conversions?
-
Actually the Light Infantry are based on WWI Doughboy look IIRC. I don't see anything wrong with them and I have seen at least one humorous take on them - a Royal Canadian Mounted Police paint scheme. That being said - I guess what you use in your games is your business. If they bother you that much, there are also the old sculpts available. The old version had baseball caps. when we ran organized evetns I would not have allowed them to be used as the figs were readily available. Since Excelsior doe not support organized events I guess any objections would be the purview of the event coordinator at whatever venue you were playing at.
-
I, personally, love the DI/Mounties/State Trooper hats. I think that they add a flavor to the troops that is unmatched in other games.
-
On a slightly off topic note, is it possible to convert Capitol Heavy Infantry into Airborne Rangers since they seem to have the same equipment?

I don't see why not though I would suggest adding bits to change their look.
A suggestion is some of the 40k plastic bits (grenades/pouches/etc) in thier various Imperial sets. If you are fairly good with the snips, pop a few helmeted heads and replace with no-helmet ones (Hasslefree makes some loose or go with the GW Plasics) and sculpt a beret or two on them.
Be a nice custom squad... as the current ones don't look right to me either.

You could use the old Hvy Infantry (football helmet troops) or use Cadian heads or even Cadian bodies with Elysian Drop Troop heads.
-
I actually have too many Elysian Troop models. Think I could mod those (with body parts intact) into something for Capitol? Also, for the converted heavy infantry, will the Airborne ranger heads fit on heavy infantry bodies?
-
Do up some shoulder pads and I think you would be there.
I will say that going off of the original scheme with the original Heavy Infantry having the turtle armor, the current heavy infantry is closer to what IMHO light infantry should have looked like. Although I like the old Campaign Covers (like what Drill Instructors/Sgts wear), they are not combat headgear; I it a little silly that these guys have huge shoulder pads and chest and knee pads and gas masks but the most sensitive part of their body has a felt hat.
-
Okay I have an idea! Get M-50 rifles from this Infantry Captain figure http://www.princeaugust.ie/target_games/tg1211.html and put them on 40k Cadians. Airborne Rangers all the way!
-
Not bad...
If you go to some really large model shops, you might be able to find 1/48 to 1/54 scale rifles. Those work too.
Alternately, you can get your hands on a few of tehm and try resincasting them. *shrug*

I like the LI with the hats.
Converting HI into Airbornes sounds like a good idea.
-
I like the Light Inf. models. ;D

Would these make good Cap Light Infantry? http://www.urbanmammoth.co.uk/acatalog/info_34105.html
-
Urban Mammoth with their old Void lines make some really great stuff to use for proxies, but the purists would point out that LI is readily available and if you wanted to you could just cut off the hats and put helmets on the figures. Of course what you play in the privacy of your own game board is your own business. I would almost argue that these guys would make better Bauhausers due to their rounded shoulder pads, or Cartel special forces. Check out the Void Viridian forces as well; they have some great figs.
-
Are there any pictures of the old Capitol Light Infantry with the caps?
-
I would use those models for Cartel Security Police or Bauhaus Strike Commando's.
-
i also like the hats!
in fact, i like them so much, i use LI as HI (and a ranger sniper as a HI sniper..)
however, i do not understand to disallow older sculpts, just because newer are out..
edit: i said this because of this statement
when we ran organized evetns I would not have allowed them to be used as the [new] figs were readily available.
-
This is'nt GW you can use the older models if you choose to and you can proxy if you cant find what your looking for. ;)

They would make awesome Bauhaus Strike Kommandos!
-
Not after I equip them with M50s and paint red, white, and blue insignias! ;D
Also, just because they've got gasmasks on does not necessarily make them Bauhaus! Light Infantry troopers seem to be the only Capitol units that wear gasmasks and hats. So I just think these Viridians with their caps and masks would make a much cooler looking alternative.

I guess I was unclear - I was referring to the GW figs mentioned in the earlier original post.

IMHO it's the shoulder pads that make them look Bauhaus.

You think Elysian heads will work for Airborne Rangers? How about Elysian heads and bodies altogether? As I said, I have way too many Elysians right now and they do have cool poses. Also, what were Excelsior thinking when making their Airborne Ranger figures? These guys look like steriod pumped NFL players! C'mon, everyone's got to agree on that one! I imagine airborne troopers as being light and mobile, not necessarily body building competitors.
-
I love the hats and think they are perfect as is. I think changing them is tinkering with a good thing. Some of Kevin White's best sculpting.

Look at the entire line, Gravel. They've all drank from the Arnification elixir. Look at the art for the game, sometime. Not a single model has any elfin qualities. If anything, it appears dwarf DNA mixed into the pool, and now everyone shaves three times a day, or more.
It's the game and the art. Either you like the figs, or you don't. We get it. Most of us like 'em, and respect others' opinions, no matter how wrong they are. ;)
-
The Airborne Rangers are just too 'extreme' looking compared to the others IMO. Other figures like the Martian Banshees, the Rangers, and the Heavy Infantries have pretty decent proportion and look cool. I have nothing against the artwork at all, I like this style of sci-fi fantasy and I think the artwork in the Rulebooks are better than what you'd find in a typical WH40K codex.
Also, the hats are slowly growing on me.

QUICK! Someone get'im a picture of Smokey the Bear!
Here ya go!

Huh?

When the scupts first came out, many moons and first edition ago, they were going for an NFL theme-the idea was to tie Capitol with American Sports (which is why the heavy infantry figs had football helmets). At the time I hated the Airborne Ranger helmets. Looking at them now, the fit in well with the asthetic that came with the 2nd ed sculpts and I have come to not mind them as much. As for being light wight-take a good look at your average US Army tab-wearing, plane jumping Ranger* and you will see that this isn't much of an exaggeration; those boys are beefy. The parachute drops you about the same speed no matter what you weigh (within limits).
As for a certain bear, Stephen Colbert said it best; "Just think of the person he had to maul to get that hat"
*As a Marine, it hurts me to say this, but it's for the good of the forum.

They've all drank from the Arnification elixir.
;D ;D
+1
even though, not entirely true in case of the new line.. EM, H/LI, BZ,... are "realistic" with moderate pads
-
I like the Light Infantry hats myself.
For making additional Airborne Rangers, I used Desert Scorpions. The helmets and overall build is about the same. I just snipped of the silencer on the barrels, gound off the scorpion on the shoulder pads, and put a small backpack on in place of the sword/scabbard. After that, they fit in perfect with my existing ARs.
-
My first Heavy Infantry figures finally arrived and I think I'm just going to buy another set of those and convert them to Airborne Rangers. Again, they pretty much have the same equipment, so I think I'll just replace Heavy Infantry heads with 40K Cadians.
-
I like them. The Light infantry is amongst the coolest Capitol models if you ask me. It is a bit of a shame that everyone has the hats, though. It's like they were standard issue, part of the uniform. They probably fit better on the Rangers, but what the hey...
-
It's all just a matter of taste. I personally think the LI look great....
