Title: Origins 2007
Post by: Topkick on September 20, 2006, 06:16:30 PM
Origins will again be held on Columbus, OH on the following dates - July 5-8, 2007.

As we have for several years the Midwest Crusaders will be hosting numerous Warzone and Chronopia events.

You might be asking yourself why I am posting about Origins 10 months in advance. There are several reasons.
1) So that everyone can begin thinking about scheduling time off next year.
2) As a reminder to those of us that plan on hosting events that we have to be ready in time to make the pre-reg
3) So that those of you who plan on attending can make event and/or tournament requests
4) To invite anyone interested in submiting events to join us so that all Warzone/Chronopia events are run in the same area.

Last year there were several present and former forumites at Origins although not all of them had the time to play. They were committed to other activities as there was no Warzone/Chronopia in the pre-reg. I blame myself for that. The demise of Excelsior contributed to this failure but I make no excuses - I was tasked with getting events in and I failed. Not this year - this year there is nothing to cloud our vision and the Midwest Crusaders are united in helping me make this the best Origins ever.

Sounds familiar - I say that just about every year when asked if I am going to make Dexcon

Anyone wanting to run events for Warzone/Chronopia are encouraged to get them to me by Thanksgiving. I will be submitting events for the Midwest Crusaders as close to 01 Dec as I can. We always have a dedicated space in the Mini Hall so if you are one of us or if you want to run your events in the same area please get them to me so I can submit them as a block of events along with ours. I am hoping to have 12+ Warzone events, 8+ Chronopia events,  and maybe even a few Legions of Steel events as several forumites have expressed a desire to play LoS.

Currently I have Coldthunder's 4 events and I know I am running 4 so we have at least 8 events in the works already. Stalker has told me he is in and will get me events after he returns from the academy. I also know One King and Sylvas are developing ideas right now. Others are trying to nail down time off for the Con so 20 events should not be a problem.

So far the biggest head-ache is deciding if we travel on the 4th of July and celebrate Independence Day in Columbus or if we lose a day of gaming and drive in on Thursday. Right now we are pretty evenly split on that question.

I am seriously thinking of making this one(con).  Its a bit of a drive for me but who knows, I'm used to road trips.  I don't know if I'm qualified to run an event but I would help out any way I can.

If you understand the rules you are qualified to run. Some of us who have been running at Origins were Cruaders but others ran their first Con events only a year or so ago. If you want to come then you can either submit events on your own or send them to me and I will submit them as a part of our groups. If you want them submitted as a part of the groups then I would need the events by Thanksgiving. BTW - If you run 16 hours worth of events your Judge Badge is free - or at least that is the way it has been done the last few years.

Topkick,

I just sent you a PM, and would love to volunteer my time and services.

I just have to find crashspace now!

It will be very keen to meet more W/C enthusiasts as well..anyone from New England want to share gas?

A hotel for the 4 days averages about 400 - 500 bucks. Get 3 other guys and it would only cost you about 100 to 125 a night and if you run 16 hrs your badge should be free. That leaves food, parking and shopping in the Dealers Room. Sounds kinda high but you got 8 months so it is possible.

Mayhaps, the PA/NJ/DE delegation may have to show up to bring a little right-coast smackdown.  I will have to see if the wife will let me go, and then round up the boys.

That would rock. IF I have some advance notice I will set aside a big block of time for the Ultimate Smack-a-thon. Who knows we might even get a game in.  ;D

If you decide to bring her let me know. I am kicking around bringing the ex-wife who is also the current girlfriend. While Archer's significant other is chastizing me unto death for my transgressions  ;)  the nongaming spouses can go explore Columbus.

As the Dew® settled over the carpeted den, the herd rustled from slumber.  We dared not get closer, even though their musk must surely cover our scent.  Then, a noxious emmission nearly felled us.  A beast stirred, scratching at its hind quarters as if it were possessed of an affliction.  The remnants of the hunt lie near, it carcass of dough and congealed dairy product hardening in the dimly lit cavern, sat, half-eaten.  This was the shot we'd hoped to capture - gamey gamers after gaming - truly, awe-inspiring - crikey!

I have had a request or two for event guidelines for Origins. From what I have seen the Origins crew dooesn't have too many regs so I will tell you what I hope to see from everyone who runs in our area.

1) Events should last for at least 2 hours. Four is the standard but two works for smaller skirmish games.
2) Figs should be painted. I'm not talking museum quality but the standard primed and 3 colors would be ideal.
3) Terrain should on the table - again preferably painted. We usually use green felt as a cover.
4) Play test the event - the more the better. Nothing kills an event faster than being caught flat-footed.
5) Have a working knowledge of the rules.
6) Have fun.

We traditionally share everything from terrain to figs to running each others events if the need arises. Be prepared to have a great time and make some great friends. The only hardcore rule I have is that no grudges from fourms carry into Origins. Everyone is welcome to stop by, chat and play. If you have had problems in the past come by and let's talk them out. Our family is too small to stand on issues from the past.

Below is the Event Presentation Format that we used to standardize the events submitted. It is more or less straight from the format Thom used in the Crusader book and the UWZ scenario section. You don't have to use this format but it would help me as I will have to format all submitted events into this format for the "Origins Brain Book"

Event Title and Time: Title of Event for Pre-reg Book and Requested Start Time (no promises but I will try to fill requests)

Allotted Time: # of hours

# Players:  Max # of players you want to run

Set Up: Short description of the board

Deployment: explaination of deployment areas

Special Rules: any nonstandard rules that you might be using for the scenario

VC: Victory conditions for scenario

VP: Method of calculating victory points and any nonstandard point method you might be using

Points: Max construction points for the armies

Scenario Synopsis: Short summary of scenario storyline.

Any questions can be directed to me via PM. I am hopoing to have all the events in hand by Thanksgiving so that I can organize them and get them in ASAP in December.

I may have to look into the train although our group usually drives. If I recall the train station is down town about 4 blocks from a hotel I stayed at years ago. We generally stay at the Ramada Inn out by the airport and near the greatest Italian restaurant in the world. It is about 6 miles from the COn site. Look into sharing the cost of the drive like we do vs the cost of flying and shipping your stuff as well as the train.

the airport isn't walking distance on a good day, that and you'd have to walk through a lousy neighborhood...there are a lot of good hotels right within 3 blocks of the Conv Center, but you'd probably have to rent a car or get someone to pick you up from the airport...

@Halfbad...the train station is about 6 blocks form the site, if I remember right...you could probably get a good flight there also because Columbus isn't a real popular destination, so fares are usually low...

I don't think that they start taking reservations for the con weekend until about Jan, but I'm not sure...I'll ask this weekend to see when  would be a good time to check...

the only downside to the hotels in downtown C-Bus is that they are pricey, but the convenience of being able to stumble in at any time from a drunken/gamered stupor is nice...

Rooms tend to fill from the center outward. We will be reserving our rooms by 01 Dec. I suggest that everyone find room groups. Anyone going solo should put in a want ad for prospective roomies in a new thread.

I have found that 4 to a room works out best unless you wish to enjoy the comforts described by Sylvas in this thread.  ::)  Unless you plan on being romantic, two couples would work also. So far Dog of War and Halfbad are the only solos. Most of the rest of us are coming in groups.

If my ex-wife/current companion comes along I would be getting a private room or sharing with Southpaw and his wife, possibly. If so, Dog might be able to bunk in with the Boys From Illinois. If she comes she will probably go sightseeing and stuff while I am at the Con so if you have a nongaming spouse/significant other bring them along. They won't have to sit in the room all the time. Joyce even tolerates me fairly well, so I doubt if there is anyone out there she couldn't get along with.  :D

Dog - you might want to think about hooking up with us in Illinois so you don't have to drive the whole way solo. We usually split gas and parking except for the driver who gets a pass - Nine hours each way behind the wheel and using their car earns them a perk or two.

Halfbad - Still brainstorming possible solutions for you.

that and having people step all over you in the middle of the night while asleep...oh and what Anthony had to deal with one of the nights...(let's just say that apparently a hairy leg still gets felt when a guy is in a deep slumber...or so the guy in question claims  ???)...

you can probably go up to 6 in a room if you make a deal to split floor time...depending on how far out from the Conv Center you stay...if you're close, I'd say just go with 4...

it looks like the Cleveland crew is getting together at least 4 Warzone scenarios, maybe more, and maybe 2 Chronopia scenarios, but that one I can't confirm yet...

I have 2 scenarios for Warzone, and John (Stalker's brother) is looking at 2 scenarios, and another guy in our group is thinking about setting 1 up, and if he can't go, then someone from here could cover it...

and anyone that can deal with us for the 4 days of Origins qualifies as an intrepid leader in my book, since I know I can be a little iffy after dealing with unwashed heathens after the third day... ;D

Please, for the benefit of humanity, here's my key and a bar of soap (and yes, i did say that to someone on the Sunday fo Origins)...

To paraphrase Zaphod Beeblebrox's psychiatrist "Hal's just this guy ya' know"

Of course there's that other quote about "the best bang since the big one" but I'm not sure if anyone on this board can vouch for that.

I'm not going to touch that one...

Haven't had a chance to get caught up on this thread yet but, I just wanted to check in and be accounted for.  I'll be at Origins once again looking to lead the charge towards lots of laughs, fun, and of course great gaming!

Rorik is correct about hotels filling up quick.  I'd get your reservations in now and if plans fall through, you can always call and cancel.  If that happens it makes other last minute gamers happy who have their names on the waiting list.  I know of at least 5 hotels that are either connected to the convention center or just one block away.  They are a bit more expensive (about $100.00 - $125.00 plus outrageous taxes per night) but as Sylvas pointed out, the convenence of being able to stumble back to your room is invaluable.

@ Top - you can use my place for storage.  I know we discussed this over the phone but I'm not certain we came to any conclusion.  You'll just have to give me a heads up so I know I need to go to the post office and retreive the goods.  BTW - I've still not found Napa Village!

Well... its official.

Leslie and I are attending.  Staying about 5 blocks away. :)

I'm bringing my Cartel and much-maligned First Born.  She will have my Cybers and her own FB.... provided we have them painted in time. :) ;D :D

well, when I'm not running any of my scenarios, I wouldn't mind getting in a few one-on-ones against some of the other people on the forum...

may have to get the Mishima and Caps filled out, and of course my Imps...

I, unfortunately, will not be able to attend Origins this year.  My Grandfather's 90th B-Day celebration is being held on the 8th.  The whole clan is going to be there ( about a 5 hour drive for me) and I would be cast out by the family if I missed it.  This is a very upsetting development for me as I was looking forward to hanging out with ya'll and hopfully kick'n the crap out of ya' at Chronopia.  I also wanted to learn this trully bizarre game known as "Warzone" , ;D, as well as attend Halfbad's painting school.    I can just not tell ya' how much I was looking forward to this.

well, having just had a grandmother break the century mark and the other one just turn 96, it's time like that that I wish I didn't live on the other side of the country of them and so I, for one, applaud your decision to attend your grandfather's 90th...

maybe sometime later someone from out here in cyberland can show you that strange game called "Warzone"...
